Project CARS (crowdsourcing) racing sim by Slightly Mad Studios (fully funded 3.75M)

What's with the hate about pCARS 2? You do realize that almost every studio does this, right? Only because Slightly Mad are not that secretive they deserve to be scolded? I really think that most problems people have with pCARS stem from the fact that they simply know too many internals. That's why the big players have a huge wall of NDA and marketing people filtering every bit of information that gets out.

I think it's because all along the promise was to stick with the one game for years and develop it ongoing (comparisons to Destiny etc.). History tells us that as soon as work starts on a sequel all those features that 'couldn't make release but will be addressed in a patch post release' get shunted to the sequel and all the original gets is some DLC.

Also, sales wise, it minimises the potential for a long tail which has an impact on ROI for backers.

Let's correct some stuff right now...

First of all nothing is "confirmed"... All it was was one post from the head of the studio explaining what his plans are for the sequel.

Second, like _machine said, this doesn't change ANYTHING about pCARS 1. There's a huge amount of DLC planned for that game and that will still be coming out. It's been clear for months that there are limits with what they can do with the pCARS 1 engine. Lots of stuff will be added to the first game but there's also a lot of crazy stuff they want to do that can't simply be patched on the original game.

Third, I don't see why it would affect the ROI for the first game... The second game won't be out for at least another 2 years in a best case scenario. Still plenty of room for the first game.

You guys really need to understand how game developpement works. When a studio ends developpement on a game, they don't go and sit on their hands for 6 months waiting to see if they should make something else... Once a game is done, a small part of the team "stays behind" to work on the DLC and future updates and the rest of the studio moves on to the next project. As a head of studio, Ian has to give work to his employees if he doesn't want to be forced to sack them. THIS IS NORMAL PROCEDURE.... Actually, in a "normal" AAA studio the work on the sequel would have started months ago. The only difference with pCARS is that the info is out in the public.

Oh and btw, for people who are expecting negative reaction to the news in here... There's a huge thread on the WMD forum about the news and the reaction from members is 100% EXTREMELY positive...

Some of them must be ex-Codemasters.

lol wait...You guys are seriously thinking that Bungie isn't already working on Destiny 2? hahahahahahahahaha

So what you're saying is that people should expect to get lied to and misled? When you make part of your pitch long term support and development, a much needed break from the AAA machine, is it really surprising that people are surprised when they just jump on board the AAA machine?

"The concept of releasing a game and moving on are long gone."

I don't have a horse in this race so whatever, but I was trying to explain why some people might see this as a negative.

EDIT: Also, there is a disconnect between people thinking on-going support means actual feature development when in reality is just means asset development.

Totally agree, planning is a good thing. It would be worthy of outrage if he said, yeah we are almost done with P CARS, letting most of the staff go now while I decide on how we going to fund our next project.
I think it's brilliant news, we are being offered an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a potentially great project once again.

It's a signifier of the shit state of the industry when any such news is greeted with shouts of "oh noes we being fucked again."

Exactly... I don't know... Maybe it's because I've been working in the industry for 8 years myself but it baffles me that people would get outraged about this.

Looks like the leak is confirmed... and lol at people complaining in the other thread that pCARS1 was dead because they started talking about the sequel.

I'll get the seasons pass for this since I'm getting a discount on the main game on the PC as a full member.

Yeah, I'm waiting to see just how much of it exactly WMD members will get (we'll get some of it but not all)... If it makes sense I'll buy it for sure since I have the game for "free" (I paid 70$ for it but it was in 2011 so that's long gone from the budget lol).

I'm looking forward to hearing the breakdown. It would be awesome if managers get the season pass considering I was so lazy and passed up the other tier rewards. =P

What's the best wheel to get for this game? Looking for something to work with my xbone and pc. Budget is under 1g. Thanks!

Thrustmaster TX or the Fanatec clubsport V1 or 2.

The Fanatec route will probably take you up to and likely over your $1000 budget.

With the TX you're going to want to buy the T3pa pedals which adds $100 plus $150 if you want a shifter.
All together its the cheaper way to go. You can find the TX for $300 now so you will end up spending $300-$550.
Also if you aren't attaching it to a desk you will want to buy a wheel stand or racing seat which would be another $125 and up depending on how deep you want to go.

Is there a huge difference between the wheels? I have no clue about wheels, nor any experience with them. I am getting project cars on pc, but also want the wheel to work with Forza 6. I don't want to cheap out on this. I will probably have to order the seat/stand as well. Money is no object, but I'm no professional video game race car driver. So I'm lookin for something to make me say wow, yet keep my wallet heavier.

Plastic vs metal. Clubsport wheels are made from a lot less plastics, but they are both belt driven wheels. I have had the TX for 2 years and its been great, but the stock pedals are really bad, the t3pa pedals come with a break mod that drastically improves breaking.
Also a good starter seat to consider, although its a pain in the ass to assemble.

I have used this and a racing wheel stand and I find the seat much more enjoyable.

Fanatec offers club sport pedals which are some of the best you can buy with out going into the crazy cost territory. I used the v1 version last Gen and they are the best I have ever used.

There's still no wheel that supports all 3 platforms (PC, ps4, xbone) yet this gen is there?
Fanatec clubsport v1 & 2 wheels will work on both with a caveat. You need to buy the XB1 adapter, and the ps4 functionally is limited on a game by game basis.

Night shots. Big improvement in lasts months.

Regular MSAA filters grass the same way that GTAV making blades nearly invisible at mid distance. Higher levels of AA don't fix shader aliasing, so not worth the performance hit. Heat distorsion affects the AA creating more aliasing.

Anybody did the first invitational with the Focus at Sonoma yet?

My wheel feels weird. Basically I get the full 900 degrees like a normal street car... Makes it tough to go around corners at full speed when you need to go hand over hand everytime.

Thanks! What setting do you recommend for a good balance of antialiasing and performance?

Are there any cars hidden in Project Cars? I mean, cars they haven't announced and are under NDA but people on the beta are playing. I just saw a video on youtube and my jaw just dropped once i realized it wasn't a fake.

I mean, if they have that kind of surprise in it, oh boy. I'm not gonna spoil or give a link before someone confirms there are hidden cars... because if that's the case the guy on youtube just broke the NDA.

EDIT: nevermind me being stupid, i just realized that someone made a skin for the formula A, making it look like Alonso's Renault R26. Stupid me.

So what's the performance difference between MSAA and DS?, as DS2X looks as good as MSAAx4. Also above either MSAAx2 or DS2X are you really going to notice a difference when the game is in motion, I don't think so. You just have to weigh this up against the performance hit on Frame rate when going for higher MSAA or DS and the minimal gain in graphically quality you might notice when the game is in motion!!

I am no expert but afaik DS is some kind of (ordered grid?) supersampling which results in a pretty big performance hit and MSAA is traditional multisampling which has a lot smaller performance hit but doesn't smooth everything because of deferred rendering. The last time I played there was an option which combined DS2x and MSAA2x but I don't know if it's still in the final version. This one was pretty good concerning performance vs. smoothing.

What is this anti-aliasing method? DS2x and DS4x?
Downsampling implemented in to the rendering pipeline (supersampling). Basically it renders the 3D scene in a higher resolution (DS2X being 2X amount of pixels) and then rendering the UI in the normal resolution so it's a bit more efficient in terms of performance .
