Oh, so it wasn't the billboard in particular that was the cause of outrage it was them taking a stand on their body shaming type stances on social media when upset people tried to get angry over the ad on social media?

Ad is fine. Whatever. Definitely doesn't need to be banned.

Well the ASA disagree. They feel the ad is making inaccurate and unsubstantiated claims.

More that Protein World were wrangling a cadre of MRA, Gamergate type twat-bags to post endless misogynist bile on Twitter.

Some people are so damn sensitive these days. I myself am overweight and I don't feel threatened or disgusted when I see ads sporting guys with insane bodies that 99.9% of the population will never be able to achieve. It is Hollywood, it is photoshopped, its a fucking ad.

Sure, I don't think it is right trying to set unrealistic expectations, but death threats and that sort of backlash isn't acceptable either. Their CEO seems like a massive douche too.

Um, Putting a beautiful women in a bikini on a billboard is a new style or marketing?

Isn't this marketing 101...

The antagonistic nature of their response to the controversy. Since forever, marketing basics has been to contain and defuse any controversy, so seeing them go all in (the entire company, not just a rogue rep on twitter) is pretty new.

I think they have every right to defend themselves on twitter when every one was attacking them and accusing them of body shaming

They're not wrong about the obesity problems in the UK and when it's brought up you are fat shaming

I don't actually get how it was body shaming ad in the first place. Calling that a beach body = shaming your "normal" body?

Kind of how I feel. Were they attacking or just replying? Sounds like it worked out for them, too.

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
A diet shake company can't use bikini girls on an ad? Da fuck.

People just need to ignore shit that's not for them.

I think the thing is that they are kinda cunty on twitter. Credit to imgur for these:

Their CEO seems to revel in trolling people (he apparently runs their twitter account).

They're not wrong obesity will lead to a host of health problems, there's a reason why heart disease is the biggest killer in many western societies. You can't ignore this fact and so say your alright the way you are, if your actually planning on combating the problem and improving life expectancies. It's intellectually dishonest.

If they were promoting anorexia, etc. I'd understand but she's just very nicely toned I mean look at those thighs.

The argument is that all bodies are beach bodies. If your body is on a beach it is a beach body.

That's ridiculous. I mean, sure, technically this is true, but there's nothing wrong with the current connotations the term "beach body" has. This just reeks of people being mad that their body isn't a beach body and instead of changing themselves they want to change the meaning of the term.

I never see men complaining when almost every form of popular media sexualizes their bodies.

And it is crazy difficult to attain the standard of masculine appearance that movies portray.

Society places much more importance on the looks of women than it does men. The media may portray similar ideals for both gender, but the perceived worth of a woman is much more tied to her image than that of a man.

They sound like a WWE villain.
But people getting outraged out of pure self-pittance and, dare I say it, envy, it's ridiculous. The company just went all in.

Envy tends to end up in hate.
I personally don't see it as shamming, but I do see where people come from with it, the ad throws in a beautiful young woman in a bikini and people jump to the idea that it needs to be a body similar to it or "you're not ready".

Hopefully he'll get eaten by a shark.

When the very idea of your line of business offends people, why not go on the defensive? All I see is a pretty funny line of twitter dickery.

They weren't doing a good job of defending themselves. They were just outright being assholes

The ads are the typical ideal used to appeal to people who would buy diet shakes.

The Twitter backlash seems a little extreme, and the response from the CEO is immature.

I admit that I need to get back into shape, but I will have realistic expectations.

I'm guessing most of the replies in this thread aren't from young women with low self esteem that get constantly reminded about the importance of their body image, because that's the vulnerability that this company is hoping to exploit for profit with their magical products that probably won't turn you into a skinny supermodel in time for summer.

They're not wrong obesity, will lead to a host of health problems, there's a reason why heart disease is the biggest killer in many western societies.

Just an FYI, the biggest reason heart related issues is a big killer in western society is because we've basically eliminated many of the ways people die in other places.

The amount listed (but not yet confirmed) is really not that much.

Haha dealt with them alright.

Those women should get a life, nobody is waiting to match ads to the lowest common denominator.

Then they should grow a thick skin. Nobody is hearing men complain about ads with ripped guys.

I see nothing wrong with their twitter approach, either. If someone was putting my company on blast because they couldn't come to grips with my product I would put them in their place. The ads aren't offensive in any sort of way.

What's the problem with wanting to push a product that is meant to help you be healthier by showing a fit person? If you're secure in how your body looks then there shouldn't be an issue. And if you aren't, antagonizing this company for their ad campaign isn't the proper means of approaching that insecurity.

christ.

Question, how would you sell a weight loss product?

"and it's OK to be fat and out of shape instead of healthy?"

LOL wow. Bravo to whoever is manning that Twitter account. Just another instance of the insane outrage culture of today when people try to delude themselves into thinking it's OK to be overweight.

If the twitter account was being offensive, which I think was just being defensive, they could have reported it and get it shut down if deemed appropiate. This whole episode is absurd. Neither was the ad body shaming nor unrealistic.

It still causes a quarter of all deaths in the UK, every 7 minutes some will die of a heart attack in the UK, and it is the UK's biggest killer.

Somehow trying to combat this fact is seen as villainous, even if it's for a profit get a grip.

It's great that you feel you need to support a company that openly hates women.

Unless you're privy to something else that hasn't been posted here your posts are ridiculous. He hasn't said anything that indicates he hates women. He was an asshole in a couple of them, but he is correct; other people's insecurities are not anyone's problem.

Angelus was right. There's a defense force here for everything except women. Can't believe people are defending their twitter tirade. Wow.

The ad seems fine given that weight loss products are more aspirational. That Twitter account is horrible. Never got the whole enrage the Twitter posters instead of ignoring them.

I'm a fat guy who hates that it's "okay" to call people "fatties" and get pissed that people harassing overweight people online is basically okay on every major forum.

But this isn't attacking fat people. It's aimed at those already skinny people who need to lose 20 pounds or tighten up.

It's not attacking fat people.
