Is this plagiarism? A tribute? An homage? Or did Square Enix hit a new sell-out low?

This happens a lot. There was a Chinese drama my partner used to watch and they loved to use the ELM track from Cowboy Bebop.

I've heard a Cowboy Bebop track on the show "Big Brother" before.

On topic: I'm guessing the show took it from Square

You know what would make this video more exciting? If I rotated the camera 90 degrees halfway through for no reason.

I know, I know. I was trying to avoid the whole "portrait" situation and...it got worse. It's not exactly filming a masterpiece though (sans the music) so, eh, screw it.

excuse me for not giving a god damn about final fantasy

That's all fine and well, but it's an iconic game with iconic music (and pretty much everything else. I really don't think we'd have the cinematic AAA games we have to day without, but that's a whole 'nother thread.)

Music sounds very identical lol

Also, sorry I'm not grammar police but..

"An" homage?

Sorry, I know off topic but why do so many GAF'ers write an before every word starting with an H? Thought it was only used when the H is silent and only the first vowel is pronounced. You wouldn't say "I'm an happy person".

Sorry if I sound like an ass. Stupid things annoy me. After all, my grammar is no where near perfect.

If the H in homage is silent, I've been saying it wrong.

No biggie, just thought it was funny :p

I'm surprised so many people don't know the FF7 main theme.
Lots of people never owned a Playstation. PS3 was my first Sony console. FF13 was my first final fantasy. FF7 is like. A billion years old at this point.

The h in homage is silent isn't it? It "oh-mahj"

Comments like these are really making me want SE to properly remake VII. The game's up on PSN, but I suppose a modern remake (if done right and does the game justice) would compel a whole new group of players experience the game.

I've always said it with the H sound lmao

Holy shit. Even on TV, I've always heard sports broadcasters saying Homage with the H sound.

Anyway, never mind me. I've been doing it wrong lol

Good catch by op though hearing the obvious rip off of music.

that puzzling face
Hypothesis:

- Actor has doremi piano book from FF7
- Asked to play piano for a scene
- Busts some random shit out
- no one during the shooting cares

Not sure about plagiarism. It's probably closer to piracy/bootlegging to record stuff off screen then upload it.

There's a radio show in the morning in the Chinese radio here in New York that rips off Uncharted Waters New Horizons music. I've heard Super Mario Galaxy used in commercials. I've heard all kinds of crazy stuff on Chinese radios.

Super Mario Bros. is 30 years old. If the main theme from the game was used in a TV show without permission you think it wouldn't be immediately recognized?

Both FF7 are SMB are iconic for different reasons.

I mean, the first few posters had no idea what the problem was, so it's clearly not nearly as iconic as SMB (which is obvious).

Having said that, if it had been a Chrono Trigger song or something, I would have known. I was just teasing.

Yeah... it's plagiarism or licensed to be used... either way... you got to be happy on how our gaming culture is affecting others. I'm sure back in 1997 square-soft had no idea how FFVII would affect todays culture.

Dude its a middle eastern TV show.

They use copyrighted material all the time.

What a misuse of a classic,great theme,though.

How is it plagiarism? You don't own songs in such a way that other people can't play them, that would be preposterous.

Its a for profit drama show.

This isn't a fan doing his or her own rendition on youtube.

Yeah,they shouldn't be using it.

There is nothing wrong for other people to play them on their own time. That is creative use. OR even fan arrangement albums and whatnot. (google MAGfest for example)

However to use a copyright song in a TV show without expressed permission from the copyright holder is an entirely different thing.

Here's what probably happened:

The Soap producers probably have a license to use tracks provided by whichever publisher distributes that FF7 piano album in that region. S-E had exactly 0 input into this occurring.

EIther that, or they just give zero fucks about using unlicensed music and the producer brought in their own MP3 and called it good. :)

Not plagiarism, not some shit-tier marketing/sell-out. Either run-of-the-mill piracy, or a mildly-humorous artifact of run-of-the-mill music licensing.

However for a copyrighted song to be used in a TV show without proper licensing to be used IS an entirely different matter.

It's not like it's a recording from the game. It's also not the complete song, it's a stripped down version of the melody. I'll admit I'm a layperson with regards to the law, but if you're telling me that this is illegal all I can do is scoff.

Nevermind the fact that FF7 is a Japanese game and this soap opera is seemingly from some other country entirely.

Are you saying they legally shouldn't be doing it or are you stating this on some ethical/moral grounds. If the latter, I disagree.

A company called Edible Arrangements used to use an FF7 track for their commercials here, about a year or two ago. I think it was only on for a few months.

Funny that people are complaining about the video. Pretty sure what happened was that the recorder tried turning the camera to get the shot into landscape mode but didn't realize that the orientation doesn't change while recording. They just made things worse.

Yet another reason to use mobile GAF almost exclusively.

Liberi Fatali used in a Hong Kong drama from 2000,My Date With A Vampire 2.
Bonus plagiarism: King of Vampire walking out of flames aka Sephiroth in
Nibelheim.

Loved the show for its over the top, manga like plot though.

Yeah there's an ethical and moral ground to support it.

Taking someone's else artistic achievement and not giving them due credit/rewarding them properly for it is unethical imo, especially when you benefit from it.

If the Cirque du Soleil can get away with using the Metal Gear Solid theme and Street Fighter 2 Ken's theme then this is nothing.

Since it turns out they ripped an album recording I'd have to agree with you... but holding the position that you can't cover a song and then sell it or make money off of it is laughable.
