Will Koji Igarashi's Castlevania successor be revealed this Monday?

Remember, this isn't a Castlevania game we're getting. It's most likely going to be a game in the vein of older Igarashi games, which more or less excludes the more traditional vanias. If you want the traditional games back, ask Konami. :/

I believe he said he was going to make games fans of his would expect him to make. I think that kind of pushes out the idea of a traditional platformer.

It's not like I'm just not going to play it. I just hope it doesn't reuse too many ideas from the Metroidvania titles.

And to be fair, Igarashi did produce at least two linear titles (Chronicles and Rebirth). So it's not like he has zero experience with the linear games.

I thought castlevania games for 3dS would be announced by now. ..im hoping something will be shown at a e3

There was one that carried the name. I was not a fan.

A traditional Castlevania bearing the name Castlevania is not looking likely.

What you're getting out of the project in this thread, should it actually exist (which it looks likely) is the best you're going to get, I think.

Konami is looking more and more like they're in trouble, and I don't think Castlevania is the franchise to save them.

I think Konami was disappointed with Lament of Innocence's sales. It's not surprising it did badly, it was a bad game.

I doubt they go try again when they're actively getting out of packaged software outside of mega-hits.

Uh...that came out in 2003. I think you mean the mediocre Mirror of Fate?

I reject the idea that Order of Ecclesia had any sort of interesting platforming, but I think that Igarashi would probably do a better job if not constrained by series conventions. I'm excited.

Training Hall had fun platforming. Even if the place was very much a hackjob, at least it was challenging

I swear to god, if the KS thread is going to be full of bitching about Classicvania vs Igavania I'm going to be really mad.

Maybe you'll luck out and some people will argue in favor of Lords of Shadow as well.

Or maybe he has the "chops", but realizes that Metroid-like progression is far more interesting than linear progression :p

From the interviews and such I've read it came down to providing value to the customer. With the Zelda inspired SotN style the game is larger has exploration and has an experience level system so the game has more play time on the clock and it's not largely gated off by skill level.

It makes a lot of sense to me, but I enjoy both styles of Castlevania and some of the 3d ones as well.

Why do people always namedrop Hagihara as a way to undermine IGA when they have no idea what either of them actually did? Not to mention all the other people that worked on the game and all its successors. Isn't it enough to simply say "the post-SOTN games aren't as good" instead of invoking the name of someone they know nothing about?

I'm not aiming this comment at you specifically, it's just something I see happening a lot lately--not just with Castlevania, but lots of old games.

IGA pushed Castlevania Chronicles PSX, Dracula X PSP and CVA Rebirth during his time, so while he may not have made any traditional CV games he definitely appreciates them, at least.

Come to think of it, a standalone arcade-style DLC game using the same assets would be a great stretch goal, wouldn't it?

Not really sure why Hagihara is given credit for SotN, everything I've seen had indicated that IGA was the one who led the direction the game went in. Even the interview I read with both of them discussing the game Hagiwara simply stated that he worked as producer and programmer and IGA discussed all the design decisions IIRC.

IGA definitely appreciates the older style of Castlevania game, I recall pretty distinctly that his favorite game in the series is 3 and that he requested to work on Castlevania after finishing Tokimeki Memorial partially because he had no interest in staying with TM and had run out of ideas for it and also because he was a fan of CV.

As much as I would like another classic style CV game (or something along the same lines) I think it'd be for the best if he focused on a single game right now and maybe had M2 develop a spin off later. They really did a good job with rebirth and I'd love to see them make another game with similar gameplay.

He actually did 3, Castlevania Chronicles, Dracula X Chronicles and Rebirth although all 3 were remakes and 1 was outsourced.

I don't believe Quarterwomann's recent tweet was posted, but it seems to confirm that any potential reveal - such as today, Monday - will not be all that there is for this project.

I am kind of having more than a hunch that this tease from Jonathan Holmes is also now relating to this project, as Takao posted earlier. If all of this is so, we will see some reveal of the game sometime today by American timezones, and a KickStarter on the 11th. Assuming Holmes is referring to this specific game, but we're kind of assured something seems to be coming today. The second tease of the moon can't just be playfulness with the concept of night and demonic darkness, but a legit timeframe.

Brace yourselves, friends.

The way I see it..anybody can make a Castlevania-esque game without really infringing on the IP. A lone hero with a small group of supporting characters running into a castle and killing monsters? That's pretty vague. I only assume that if the character's name is Belmont and the game is called Castlevania that's when you'll get into trouble. Hell, Konami doesn't even own the Dracula name.

Then again, I've been dreaming of a Hellsing game for years now.

A Hellsing game ? Count me in

Exciting.

But if this

Is an indication of what the game is going to look like then I'll have to pass and kick some magazine racks.
Shallow maybe, but I can only take so many 8bitted graphics games these days.

I'd love it if it was pixel-art. The main problem with pixel-art these days is that almost every "retro"-style game uses the same art-style. Don't blame the pixels, blame the bandwagon artists.

No, in this context it only means exactly one thing.

People immediately think NES, and i understand that's what we usually refer to by convention, but 8 bit doesn't necessarily mean that.

this is 8 bit

nes_castlevaniaivur5.png

this is 8 bit too.

Image in the OP is in line with Dracula X on PC Engine, i'd say. So above typical 8 bit, but at the same time below what i'd call good 16 bit pixel art (think Capcom CPS 1/2).
Although yeah, tbh, stuff like The New Generations on Genesis didn't look much more advanced than this.

I thought this was something until IGA got signed a contract to work for a company making mobile games? I heard about this around a year ago and he just cancelled everything in the Kickstarter and so.

So... do we wait until the full moon is out today in the US? When's that?

*googles*

Around 00:30 UTC, or 01:30 BST/02:30 CEST. I'm hopping on this ghost of a hype train. Destination: the moon!

Err, the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 had a 16-bit GPU. It's not 8-bit anymore

Marketing. It's an 8 bit console :p
Anyway, semantics. That pic indicates a graphic quality somewhere between late 8bit arcade machines and early/underused 16bit. My idea of 16 bit retro style is something like Junkboy's demakes pixel art, which would be more my cup of tea.

Is it? You're saying it does not have a 16bit GPU?

The twitter user "Quarterwomann" (named in the op) have 128 followers, among which a bunch are 8-4 staff (video game localization company based in tokyo, note that they where working with mighty no. 9's kickstarter). Quarterwomann herself is following 1 user "SwordOrWhip" who have posted one tweet, a few days ago:
"Sword... or Whip...? Choose one. Your decision matters not."

Just under 14 hours.

If nothing is announced at least we'll be able to see a full moon. Get some beer ready.

The full moon happened leading into today, so last night. If the full moon is a reference to a reveal, it should happened before the entirety of America is into Tuesday. I would imagine this is relying on PST.

Maybe I'm partial to more rock-sounding beats, but I still think the best versions of Bloody Tears are the Rondo of Blood version and the Castlevania Chronicles arranged version. Give me that 80s rock percussion! I always thought the Chronicles arranged version sounds like something that could've been done for any of those Italian horror movies produced by Dario Argento in the 80s with former members of Goblin doing the score.

these are my favorite versions too. :)

good comparison!

Man, I kinda had that idea for a metroidvania. Rather than make you choose sword or whip, you chose sword or gun. Sword would be SoTN style gameplay, Gun would be metroid style gameplay. Same world, but your progression would take a different path because upgrades would do different things.

Damn, now I want Iga to be the game's protagonist. Igavania starring Iga - how awesome would that be? :p
This would enable a cool inversion of the typical Metroidvania mode of progression.
The objective in this game would be to escape from the dark cellars of castle Kon Ami before it collapses in on itself and crumbles to pieces.

Who is the villain? The leading CEO and his leading powers of Pachinko machines?

Probably.. After beating the main game and getting the secret ending you can play through the inverted castle as Tak Fuji. He is grossly overpowered, so you can get through the game by just pushing X, X, X, X.
Though you will get sucked.

The EXP system allow bad players like me to beat the game, only slower than better players. I appreciate that fact, as I could never survive the original platform games.

I don't want to read the reactions if this is some very elaborate fake.

Is there any official representative to contact about this ?

As long as my usual idea of an inverted Konami HQ is part of the package, he must destroy the mysterious evil that lurks within and free the trapped franchises.
