GOG Galaxy now open to everyone

I love GOG, I am not sure how I feel about this client though since one big reason I like them is that they dont have a client. If they add some incentive to use this over just downloading games from their site, I am sure I will jump on. last time I checked though, most of my games were not on the client yet, but I think that has changed since they split up titles that were once combos (like Ultima underworld 1+2 or wing commander 1+2) into separate downloads now.

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.
I've been using this for a few weeks now, and I can't leave it open because of a huge memory leak issue I have with it. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

I use Big picture a lot, so in Steam it's easy, whatever I launch in big picture, knows it's on the TV and fullscreens there, and usually doesn't need any mouse clicks. All other stuff always needs manual switching and numerous mouse clicks, and walks over to my PC to get right. I know I'm not a typical user, and it's kind of my fault to have hundreds of games spread on different services, but it just sucks that there isn't a way to consolidate all the lists. I'd be fine with just having one unified friends list at least, that would allow me to join or vice versa.

Also, Origin is a massive resource hog, and I don't want to have it running in background all the time.

I have this wireless keyboard with a built in touchpad that helps me out whenever I want to use my TV for PC gaming.

Fairly cheap too and good quality. I'm sure it can help you out in your situation.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
Any ideas for when it will officially release? 1.0 I mean.

I was talking about this is to a Kremlin friend from Poland. If GOG galaxy was not ready for the Witcher 3 I thought that would be a huge mistake as that game could be a great title to launch a platform like this even if its still in beta form. I'm glad it's at least become open but they need to make sure that it runs like a clock when the Witcher it's because many of us will be preloading that game via GOG.

As much as I welcome this, I don't think I will move over my purchase there due to the fact that Steam offered much cheaper regional price.

Cool, waiting for itchio to get one of these too. As long as it's optional this is a great since tracking down my non steam games and updating them is usually the worst part of using any non steam store.

I signed up for the beta.

Although, I honestly dislike the sudden rise of multiple clients now that Steam has been a great success. Once they start releasing exclusive titles like EA and Ubisoft have done with Origin and uPlay, respectively, things will just start to get worse for the platform. At least GOG would just be an alternative and not a competitor.

Hopefully the new client works on my PC. The alpha client would never open for me. Not sure if it was an issue with multiple monitors or what.

But the client is completely optional and CDPR are releasing The Witcher on Steam as well. I don't see GoG becoming like EA in that regard.

Looks like I will be buying more games off GOG now. Seriously, I like the idea of having a DRM free game client that manages all my game purchases and patches from GOG.

Shame there is no Linux build yet. Oh well...

Tried it for a week or so.
It's still a bit primitive, it stilòl lacks features, but seems very promising.
The rollback feature sounds fantastic and I especially love how it's very clean, light and not mandatory (contrary to steam).

I agree (I don't even use steam myself), but Galaxy is completely optional. Some people just felt the need for a client to patch/friend list/achievements... so why not? As long as they don't force it upon me, it's great.

Awesome piece of software so far.

To those who got into the beta and recently installed the client: You can import galaxy-ready (i.e. recently installed) games via the plus sign on the top left. That pops up a menu, choose "scan and import Folders", navigate to where you installed the games and let it do its thing.

For older installs, the procedure is a bit more involved. You have to select each game in your galaxy library, then click more...->Manage->Import folder and choose the respective directory. You need to do this for every installed game.

Oh, and read the mail you get with the beta client code: Bug reports go into a specialized bug tracker, and it's linked there.

I hope it's a huge success, a drm free client with all these features deserves it. Being able to rollback patches is pretty cool.

I think I might try to make the switch for a short while to see how I feel. I like that they're doing this. One thing that would make me super stoked is if they added achievements to a whole bunch of old PC games, dumb but I'd love it.

The client really needs to be updated to show all games on a single page, the way Steam does it.

So yeah, it's early but I love the premise of a purely optional client with DRM-free downloads. Patch rollback is awesome too!

They should make a huge sale to attract attention to this new endeavor of theirs. By itself, it won't make a big splash, since people who are talking about it are the people that already knew it was coming.

Expect it to be pushed hardcore when preload for Witcher 3 begins and when it gets released.

Impatiently still waiting on my invite :(

GOG has been growing a lot in the past years, the optional client is helping a lot because they are offering most of the things steam does.

So now, playing a game on GOG offer (almost) the same bonuses as steam plus drm free, fair regional prices and so on.

That regional pricing can be little meh tho. Witcher 3 is good example of this, they offered me some store credit [that I don't want nor need] just because € was so much more valuable currency at the time than USD. To make up difference instead of actually dropping € price of the game.

they were clever, now € and $ are much closer and the game is still to be released.

Just got the Beta email I assume is the invite. Does it have achievements enabled now for some games, or is that a future feature?

What is the point in fair regional pricing if you will game the system when currency values change in order to minmax profits? That is far cry from fair pricing, especially to customers like me who use GOG once in like 4 years. I don't do shit with some store credit that is used to compensate for the fact that I live in country that has very strong currency at that moment.

It's just normal pricing adjusted to income levels of regions and store credit as "Hey look, we are fair" token.

Great! Hope they will put a good competition against Steam for PC games distribution as i don't like Valve methods, so just like consoles with competition gamers can choose best one instead of monopoly dominance which can sometimes create stupid things to make money.
