Kotaku: Konami Sucks

I get cancelling Silent Hills.

I sort of understand delisting P.T.

But to straight up rip P.T. from PSN so no one can ever download it again is fucked up.

I'm still buying MGSV no matter how bad konami sucks. Sorry that I won't be protesting on something thatll hurt me more than it does konami.

I don't really think Slowtaku is justified in this case?

There's already been a bunch of articles on the site about Konami's recent behavior and PT being pulled. This is just an opinion piece to go along with the news articles.

not a bad time. what else does Konami have that is worth anything after MGSV.

So many quotes for this. I mainly made that crack because of the Jim Sterling having gotten black listed after bad mouthing Konami.

But yeah, they have nothing -- even if they release something they'll just farm it out to some cheap dev port house that is less than deserving of the IP it belongs to.

Aside from MGS V (which I will be buying solely to support Kojima) Konami has lost my business. I encourage you to do the same.

They no longer want your business, they aren't making things for you anymore because the things you want are expensive to make and don't appeal to enough people to make the investment worthwhile.

They aren't upset that us console gamers are pouty. This move looks like a significant shift away from what we would consider proper gaming being a part of their core business.

It sucks but businesses can and do pivot all the time and if you consider the environment Konami are in I can understand why they are doing this.

they have been sucking for about 2 gens now, longer depending who you ask. We've just been living on the fumes of some re-releases, HD collections, and a new MGS every once in a while.

The break up was a long time ago, they're just back to collect their stuff.

Calling P.T. one of the best horror games of all time is a tad hyperbolic...

A demo that does horror better then 95% of horror games in the last few years? I have played a shit ton of horror games and nothing unnerved me more then PT.
It's a simple but extremely effective concept.

I think it's cool and progressive too, but "the last few years" and "all time" are very different things.

I am in the crowd that thinks P.T. is overrated, but that doesn't mean I want to see it go or thought it was bad. I do think in this current gaming 'era' horror has been much on the rise recently though, and I think personally there's better horror games out there than P.T., though a lot of these games are still in the niche that most people don't know about/haven't played. But P.T.'s strength was being a strong teaser that was effective and brought interest successfully to an upcoming title in a franchise many had left for dead. I don't think it's the best piece of horror gaming that came out in the last few years, let alone all time, but I understand it gained more mainstream attention and most people haven't played or know about the things I consider better than it, and a lot of what I'm thinking of isn't on the console space.

It is a shame to see this happening, and I hope someone successfully manages to preserve P.T. in some form, it's an interesting risk that played well for the game until Konami fucked it all over in their apparent self-destruction path they've been doing for the last few years which is only getting worse and more publicly noticed recently (they were a mess 3-4 years ago when all those other Silent Hill stuff was coming out as well, however), but I think chiming it as the best horror game of all time sort of devalues the point of the article. I know this particular article writer is very vocal on his opinions, and fine, and this is an opinion piece. But as a horror enthusiast, that line did somewhat bug me I'll say. P.T.'s loss is stupid, pointless, and a damn shame, and P.T. is great at what it does. But to champion it as the best of the best in the horror genre I think is a disservice to both what P.T. accomplished and to horror gaming itself. Horror strikes different people differently, that will always be true in a bigger way than a lot of other genres, but to me, the line in the article, as well as dragging up his dislike of Kojima as a, "Whatever," point to the article, I feel somewhat devalue the whole article to me.

Opinions are opinions, but in my opinion, despite agreeing with the underlined point, I find the article to be somewhat distasteful and petty. Opinionated is opinionated, but I think it makes this come off more like a forum post, the epitome of expressing one's opinion right, than an educated or thoughtful editorial opinion.

I'm just being sarcastic. We know that Konami sucks, they've been great at it for a while now.

Konami's been shitting on their own legacy for over a decade, and it all started when they changed their damn logo.

Also, Konami, Kotaku, Klepek and Kojima all have 6 letters. 6666. Think about it. It's a conspiracy. And maybe Frog Fractions 2.

Pretty much.

Konami has been shit for the absolute longest.

However, what they've been doing within the space of ~1 month has been disastrous and will only come to bite them in the ass later severely. Wouldn't be surprised in the least if "boycotters" would drop money day 1 on the next Metal Gear, at the very least on pure curiosity, as many are hardcore fans of the series.

Personally, I'll still keep Konami in consideration, despite their dickish moves. There are one or two games that they could announce from the past that would make me buy, and I'm surely going to buy the next Metal Gear.

Perfect.

I don't think Konami knows how big P.T. is. Every friend I showed it to fell in love with it, churning and rememberin the PS1 horror days.

Everyone was sold on a PS4 when they found out its not available for PS3. Now they'll be turned off when they find out digital games don't last.

But I guess Konami knows...

is Konami even going to continue with their Soccer and Baseball games?

are they cutting everything, or just the everything that Western fans care about?

Oh fuck. It's happening.

Good on Kotaku for calling out the blatant bullshit. Seriously considering degrading my LE preorder of MGSV to a used regular copy. After that it'll be quite easy to not buy the zero traditional non-soccer games they make after that.

Nah, keep your LE pre-order, bend all fingers on the replica hand down as far as you can except the middle one, then send a picture to Konami.

In the same week, we’ve seen what’s both amazing and upsetting about the advent of digital distribution. The Adventures of Tron Bonne, a rare Mega Man spin-off for the PS One, was regularly going for more than $200 on eBay. Now, it’s available on PlayStation Network for $6. P.T., one of the best horror games of all-time, is now longer available. Period. It’s totally gone.

Way too dramatic. It was barely a game. I don't see anyone playing it more than twice at best.

Never been so scared that I didn't finish a game before....and it was a demo.

Sorry to be that guy, but wouldn't Konami be setting themselves up for a backlash if they continued to offer a playable teaser for a game that its no longer possible for them to make because of the split with Kojima?

Hell, even if they were to proceed with the game under different creative leadership they'd have to pull the existing version of P.T (because it would still be misleading) in order to replace it with an updated version.

I'm not defending Konami over this, I'm just pointing out the reasonable and obvious business reality.

Calling P.T. one of the best horror games of all time is a tad hyperbolic...

Kind of because it's hardly a full game... But as for it's horror/atmosfear, it's just that good.

Anyway, I've expressed my feelings in the other thread. Fuck konami. You just don't kill an "experience" like this one.

Oh boo hoo, Konami removed a tech demo for a game they're never making.

Where was this article when Konami bought Hudson for the sole purpose of killing them?

PT is a cute little thing. I found nothing truly remarkable about it other than it being attached to the Silent Hill franchise and two big names.

The hyperbole around it is weird but that's how opinions work after all.

They weren't offering it.

They delisted it, ie. completely removed from search on PSN.

The next team that works on Silent Hill could create a fucking masterpiece of modern horror, a brilliant and artistic and terrifying journey through mind and body, and everyone would think it's terrible because of these events or write it off before even touching it. Or even touching it.

I don’t understand the anger towards Konami for pulling PT from psn to be honest…

Silent Hills at the moment is a cancelled project, so its promotional demo, PT, has no marketing value to Konami…

Since the last console generation we know that console holders (Sony, MS and Nintendo) used to charge game makers per download volume of their games from their digital stores and we know that the cost on Sony platforms (PS3) was 16 cents per GB…

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/113788/Sony_Charging_Publishers_For_PSN_Download_Volume.php

This policy is still valid today in the next generation consoles and game makers still have to pay psn or xbox live (or any digital store on PC) for bandwidth costs…

The size of PT demo on psn was 1.3 GB which means that Konami had to pay Sony around 16-20 cents when some random user decided to download the “Playable Teaser”…

The cost value is based on 2009 prices (per GB) and maybe it is a lot cheaper now, but the point I want to make is that downloads from digital stores cost money to publishers/game makers…

Since PT is no longer going to make any money for Konami and Sony still charges for the bandwidth per download, it seems logical to me for Konami to remove PT from psn store…

And maybe 15-20 cents per download don’t sound like much money, but if you multiply that by 4 or 5 or 10 million people that are going to download the demo, the amounts is very large for a company that is trying to cut costs and restructure…

I am sure that every PS4 owner would want to download PT at the moment, especially after hearing about eBay prices…

As a gamer I am hugely disappointed from the cancelation of Silent Hills, but I totally understand why Konami pulled PT from psn store…

People keep saying it costs money to keep it on the servers, but I can go to my PS3 and download some shitty demo from 2007 with no issues, but suddenly a less than 12 month old demo has to be pulled?

Konami was at a Gaming Summit today (gambling). They were selling a Neo Contra slot machine.
You can tell their priorities are not in video games anymore. They are going all in on gambling/pachinko.
