Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

MC looks a lot like Albedo from Overlord LN

Hopefully she's an yandere too

I screamed OH MY GOD as I saw this.

Hell yes! I love the art, I love the 2D graphics, I love that video with IGA being awesome.

BRING IT ON!

Kind of off topic but sort of on-topic. When you put money towards a KS are you billed immediately? Never put money towards a KS but i am tempted to throw money towards that grimoire perk
No. You're billed when the kickstarter finishes if it hits the funding goal (Which this likely will).

Much like the Playtronic kickstarter, I back this with my eyes closed. More than happy to support IGA.

Money is pouring in

Will stubborn companies like Konami finally realize that people want to buy these games and, at the very least, license out the IP for indie studios to develop? Kickstarter takes care of the funding and many of the original developers are making the game, all Konami has to do is license out "Castlevania" and collect royalties off of their IP. Then we can have an actual new installment of this great series instead of the "wink-wink, nudge-nudge", it's not technically Castlevania, that we are getting.

Still, I'm very eager for Blood Stained. I for one, like the stained glass inspired art style. It could be really good if they pull it off.

Man, these Kickstarter rewards. Have your pet as an in-game enemy!
Do these things not instantly demolish the immersion for everybody else?

Will give money when it's a finished product.

They didn't make Mighty no.9 look like it's concept art in 2D...

Something like that lol

That's Comcept though.
Inticreates made Gunvolt, which was... just alright I guess? But before that they made Mega Man Zero/ZX series as well as Mega Man 9 and 10 and all of those were fantastic games.

Main character seems cool, Castlevania gameplay, possible voice acting (w/Hayter as one of them!), and Yamane soundtrack....yup, backed!

As ezekial45 said, the timing is gonna make this happen too, more Konami fail.

I don't get the "too anime" complaints

What anime have you been watching that looks like this lol

Ignore those people, they're silly. To them "anime" means "thing I don't like". They, for some reason, like to pretend Kojima's art isn't also "anime" as well or something.

In for $125 trying to decide on the platform for the physical copy. Thinking PS4 (to go with my SOTN box) or PC (will have a much longer shelf life).

I'll be grabbing digital for the other. Why both? Why the fuck not!?

Keep it sprite based Inti. Keep it Sprite based.
No, don't. (And they won't, read the pitch)

It's a seriously ineffective way of spending your budget. I'd much rather have a large and varied 2.5D game than a tiny or repetitive sprite-based one.

2.5D in UE4 sounds good to me. Guilty Gear Xrd looked incredible (even on UE3), and I can see it be used very effectively here. Producing a strictly 2D game is very time consuming and it will no doubt lead to sacrifices for the core structure of the game, as creating high quality 2D visuals (like Dragon's Crown, for instance) take a lot of work.

I am so torn 50 bucks for a softcover art book is killing me but I doubt it's going to be released anywhere else for much cheaper if at all. Gaahhhh I need more money.

Backed hard.

I like that they are going with a single high-end UE4 version as the base goal.

I'd honestly much rather have some 2.5D in UE4. Pixel art is getting extremely tiresome.

UE4 is a much better engine than Unity. Period.

Castlevania always had pixel art that was much better than most. The sprite work in a game like SOTN pretty much puts all "new-retro" games to shame. It would be nice to see an evolution of that. Also Inti's track record of sprite work vs 3d character models isn't too promising.

Could that mystery stretch goal, that has to be unlocked, a handheld and/or a Wii U version? I'm so used to play my Metroidvanias on Nintendo handhelds.

UE4? That seems a little bit too much for a 2.5D game. Unity would cover handhelds, too. And I guess the resulting game would not really be worse.

UE4 is apparently very nice to use for devs. That's probably the reason they chose it, not the cool looks.

You're not billed until the end of the campaign.

That's great and all, but it doesn't cover handhelds, which are/were my preferred platforms for a Metroidvania. :)
And I guess for this type of game, not being AAA, Unity could be viable, too.

Is 2.5D confirmed? Or do you just mean 3D objects in a sidescroller?

It's in the kickstarter page:

WHY 2.5D?

IGA decided to go with 2.5D for this project for both financial and artistic reasons. All decisions in game development involve trade-offs, and for Bloodstained a 2.5D world built on Unreal Engine 4 was the right choice to balance development time, graphical fidelity, budget, and scope.

At the same time, IGA is very excited about exploring the paths a 2.5D style opens up within the classic Igavania formula. As he begins a new chapter of his career as a developer, he's looking forward to trying things that will enhance, rather than detract from, that core gameplay.

Still, though, we would never discount the fans' love for that classic style. The development team is looking forward to working with backers every step of the way to decide on custom shaders that will give the game a distinctive, hand-crafted look. Games like Guilty Gear and Strider are proof that 2.5D can be handled in a way that honors a classic aesthetic while allowing for new possibilities; that’s what IGA hopes to achieve with this project.

And of course, since it's an Igavania game, the 2D gameplay and feel are nonnegotiable.

I don't mind the art, but I don't feel like the artist was able to capture the sense of the crystalisation of the body very elegantly in the art.

I'm really liking the look of the protagonist. I don't have the funds to currently back it, but good luck to Igarashi and his crew.

Awesome! Will totally back a physical copy!

And I love the David Hayter mention. It's like pissing in Konami's face 2 different ways.
