Witcher 3 PC Performance Thread

Welp, count me in on the freezing list as well. First time was in my inventory, and now it just did it a second time after galloping away after the initial griffin encounter.

Game just totally freezes while the music plays in the background and otherwise unresponsive. Hopefully a patch is coming soon.

Have to alt-ctrl-del to get out.

Performance is above 30 so far with everything maxed save for hairworks, but I'm getting an annoying stutter every time I pan the camera or run.

well not really...yet
Just posted this in the main thread, but

Does anyone else think Hair Works looks worse and less realistic than the standard hair?

It's a 20-30FPS hit, and yet seems worse?

Im speaking about Geralt's hair btw, so maybe it makes other stuff look better?

But I mean, without it I get 60fps at 1440p.

thoughts?

Everything maxed except for Foliage Distance on High and Hairworks off, I get a locked 60fps. Its pretty fucking amazing. This game looks incredible, downgrade or not.

If I turn on Hairworks and set Foliage Distance to Ultra, I can lock it at 30fps. I like that the game has this option, and it seems to deliver perfect frames. It looks insane, but its not worth losing 60fps to me.

I've also turned of CA and Sharpening as I dislike both.

Minimal tweaking required and I just enjoyed the game for almost 3 hours. Its fantastic so far. I have had the game crash 4 times however... a bit annoying.

Wow the game is SOOO Much smoother when capping to 30fps on my 770. I can run it with the high preset night (disabled hairworks tho) and it's really nice looking and smooth.

Is your video card overclock?

i7 5820k @ 4.4 ghz
SLI 970s (stock)

Getting between 80 and 100 fps at 1080p with hairworks on and everything maxed except foliage distance (high). Foliage distance at Ultra = still over 60 most of the time but some drops when a lot of hairy animals are around. Might be able to OC the video cards a bit and avoid the drops.

Fantastic SLI scaling. Very impressed.

I have a very similar machine. This sounds very encouraging. I can't wait to try it for myself.

So far my experience:

SLI GTX 980's with mild overclock
I7-4790k @ 4.7ghz
ROG Swift, 1440p.

Maxed settings, 1440p.

Seems to be 60+ consistent, other than cutscenes/close ups of hair (i assume because of hairworks)

No crashes after 30 mins so far.

I have a feeling later on after I leave the first area this 60+ average is going to go to like 40 =(

Then comes the fun part, tweaking!

For those getting crashes, are you running overclocked cpus? If so, maybe these newer games are starting to show if you have a stable overclock or not. Gta 5 for example crashed a lot for me until I either lowered my oc or made a few voltage adjustments.

Screw it, I'm done for the night.

Never had this much trouble with a PC game in 15 years.

Runs great until it crashes...7th time just now.

Oh well.

I'll see what's up on forums tomorrow.

Yeah...I've had about 4 in the past 3 hours...

Hopefully it's a driver or something similar that can be patched.

Yup I have the same stutter, especially noticable rotating the camera slowly with a controller. Hope they can sort this out, it's annoying when I'm trying to enjoy the view with a slow camera pan lol.

edit: had one crash, where I got stuck with a tutorial popup that wouldnt go away even though I could hear myself getting attacked I couldn't see anything moving lol. After 10 seconds or so of that it crashed.

What cpu? I have a 770 and the game runs around 50fps on high. Often at 60fps. No need for a 30fps lock. Settings high (posted them earlier in the thread).

So, my specs: FX6300, R9 290 4g vram, 24 gigs ddr3 1600.

I turned off nvidias hair to off, and foliage to high, everything else on ultra with HBAO+. 60 fps 1080p baby.

So ya anyone with AMD cards just get rid of nvidias hair for now.

Good to know . *rubs my 290x*

Btw, whatever happened to amd's TressFX? Isnt it using the same tech as hairworks?

omg guys i love it. i5 2500k and gtx 680 currently have everything at ultra except for view distance and no hairworks and hasnt dipped below 30 fps(capped). Looks amazing and runs even better then i could imagine!!!!

Color me surprised. Running this on low settings at 1080p with a 560ti and it is quite playable. I am not having any issues with the framerate.

Looks like someone above you managed to get it to med-high with that same card, though granted, we don't know how extensively they tested the framerate.

It makes beasts look really good. A bear charging at you has fur fluffing in and out as it moves. Looks really good.

i5-4670k

I was getting between 40-55 on medium/high but locked 30fps is actually smoothing than a variable rate. And I can bump the quality if I decide to go for 30.

Is there anyone else brave enough to take res up to 4k and watch their graphics card drop to it's knees? I have a GTX980/16G RAM/i7-920 @ 4k with no Hairworks most settings are on High with exception of Ultra on textures, foliage and HBAO+. Getting between 20-30fps. I need a Titan X.

Alright been playing for over an hour now and have the game running well on a slightly older rig.

1080p
2500k @ 4.5
16 GB
2x 7970s @ 1150/1650 (However CF is disabled for this game as it doesn't work well, needs driver)
Windows 8.1

I run everything on Ultra except for Foilage and Shadow which are set to high. SSAO. No hairworks of course. Gives me 45-60 fps depending on the conditions. I've had zero crashes, occasional flicker but it's very rare. Game runs very well.

Once AMD hits us with proper CF support I should be able to get 60 FPS full time with everything on Ultra, SSAO, and no Hairworks. I'm pretty impressed considering my rig is starting to age and I'm only running 3GB cards.

I turned the hair stuff off and the game never drops below 60 FPS at 1080p. There is some fps flux but not at all noticeable due to gsync!

2 hours in, no crashes, running butter smooth with everything maxed except the NVidia hair thing which is turned off. Some very early screenshots:

Ah okay. I go for variable 40-60fps. Xeon1230v3 here. But 30fps locked at Ultra ... Maybe I'll test it, but high fps feel so good during combat or horse riding.and there is no big difference from high to ultra.

290X
4770k

Runs between 45-60 FPS max settings except Hairworks. There are certain areas (dense forests, etc.) which impact framerate much more. Overall I'm satisfied.

Oh and played about 2 hours, zero crashes.

With a 280X I'm getting over 30 frames, but not much more than that, so I just locked it down to 30. Most settings on high, except textures and detail which are on ultra. Looks pretty nice. Its strengths are on the countryside and outdoors. Indoors and close-ups doesn't look very good at all. :p

But i'm experiencing framepacing issues. What the fuck is it with PC games often suffering from this shit. As it is 30fps feels decidedly stuttery. Console games probably getting a smoother experience than me. :|

Decided to try medium settings and I'm getting 45 - 50fps which isn't too bad. I'll probably stick with the higher framerate, it just feels better to me but at least it's nice to have the option to chop and change as I wish :)

New to computer gaming...I bought this recently:

Intel® Core™ i7-4710HQ Processor (Quad-Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.5GHz w/ Turbo Boost)

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5

8GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz

I'm getting about 35 fps playing on medium at 1080p...I feel like based on everyone elses posts I should be getting a lot better performance. Something I'm missing?

Turn off hairworks first, that has a really big effect on the fps and I honestly don't think it's worth it.

On the alienware Alpha, I have post-processing on high, all settings on high outsise Water and textures which are on Ultra and getting a pretty consitent 30.

Getting 40+FPS with everything on High, SSAO on and Hairworks off.

Is this game CPU or GPU bound? Think I'll OC my proc to see if it helps. Thoughts on that?

So, I'm not getting Crossfire scaling with my 7970's I don't think, because they're both only running at 50% and I'm only getting 40fps with settings on High and Hairworks off... I expected the frame rate to be higher to be honest...

Gotta be that right?

I think this confirms my theory because I've got two of those and I'm still getting only the same FPS. I can't remember how to force crossfire though.

For those using a DS4 on PC - are you using DS4Windows or just plug and play without a program? Wondering if there is a way to get the game to display the actual DS4 icons instead of the 360 icons for button prompts.

It's a laptop. It's hard to gauge really unless other people have the same one.
