New Witcher 3 Patch on the way with huge list of changes and graphics improvements

There's a damn thread for this.

there is a downgrade thread specifically for this type of talk...

Relax people. I'm aware. I was just trying to highlight what improvements are required beyond INI tweaks, namely particle effects and lighting distant objects. It seems well within reach if they can figure out how to include those in a dynamic lighting engine. Might want to check the GIF fully before reacting

Great to hear they are working on these issues. I am going to leave my copy in plastic until patch impressions. In the meantime, I have Alien Isolation waiting in my mailbox.

Wonder how the PS4 version will improve, and if it's worth shelfing until the patch is released. I haven't really experienced any bugs, butter game does feel a bit janky and an improved experience is always a good thing.

"If the consoles are not involved there is no Witcher 3 as it is," answers Marcin Iwinski, definitively. "We can lay it out that simply. We just cannot afford it, because consoles allow us to go higher in terms of the possible or achievable sales; have a higher budget for the game, and invest it all into developing this huge, gigantic world.

This alone should have us reevaluate our expectations for a game with this kind of scale for future games where budgets have started to become the bottleneck.

Not talking about occasional bug/glitch that happens under specific rare conditions, but about basic things that every player will face. There's already reports of people not being able to progress past the title screen. Shit like this shouldn't happen, period.
All in all, the rule of thumb for this generation is to wait at least 6 months after game is released in order to get a polished/working game it seems.

Best to just treat all western game releases these days with extreme caution. Nobody seems that bothered about it so it's unlikely to change any time soon. Eurogamer didn't even mention it. You have multiple people in this very thread complaining about full game crashes plus people unable to even access the game but because it's a darling developer people are rushing to make excuses. Bugs happen but whether your game is open world, linear, 2D or whatever if people are experiencing widespread full game crashes that's unacceptable. And on a fixed hardware spec no less (on console anyway).

This alone should have us reevaluate the sheer scale of future games where budgets have started to become the bottleneck.
This sounds more like they didn't anticipate the new consoles being a half step and expected the typical generational leap.

These things happen. When MGS4 was first shown, well before the PS3 was a solid machine with settled specs, kojima and co. showed a game that ended up being much more impressive than what came out. Now mind you, much like tw3 mgs4 was still a hell of a looker when it came out.

But I digress. CDPR had my money a year ago on the blind faith that they would put out a game worth getting and a game they were thoroughly going to support and it's good to see that they are who I thought they were.

Can't say that I have any of the issues that others are experiencing... stutter, crashes, etc, but better graphics and more options are always welcome.

Agreed.

Just out of curiosity, does the camera panning glitch bother anyone else? Can anyone confirm if the same thing is present on the xbone?

Yes, if you mean the stuttering. Yes it is present on the Xbox One and yes it does more then bother me. I only played the first few minutes before stopping, just waiting for the patch to release to cap the frame rate (and hopefully deal with the stutter).

That doesn't remotely sound at all like they are commenting on the power of the machines in the least.

He is plainly saying Witcher 3 only on PC was never going to happen or be made. They only way Witcher 3 was gonna happen is if it came out on PC AND the consoles.

Are these patches available for the X1 version as well it seems to only mention PC just want to be sure, Im getting the game tomorrow will wait til everything is fixed before I play it

Seriously some of the graphics comparisons here are hyperbole. By it and play it it runs great on X1, I was impressed.

I don't know about you but I can't detect frame pacing issues in a game that fluctuates between 35fps-40fps.

The weird thing about the camera stutter, is that it has to be a glitch. You can park yourself in an area with a perfect locked frame rate, run around with just the auto pan using the left stick, but as soon as you pan the camera with the right stick, it's as if the analog acceleration just randomly gets confused and stops all camera moment at random intervals. If that's also present on Xbox one, the additional effect of an uneven refresh interval tick would greatly compound the jerkiness.

There's one good setting: OFF
While I agree in concept, it's worth pointing out that the high sharpness of the original 2013 videos is one of the main contributors to the downgrade argument. I can see quite a few people cranking it up just to try to emulate what they saw two years ago, regardless of how it actually looks when you're playing.

I know, in the beginning of the game I can stand still and it appears fine. I rotate the camera and it becomes a stuttery mess. Thus causing me to not play and wait for a patch as it would definitely cause me to get a bad headache and become nauseous for any extended period of time... nor would I want to ruin the experience that way. Being sensitive to a very variable refresh rate on top of the stuttering is just a recipe for disaster. I am glad CDPR acknowledged that and are working on a fix.

Did they aknowlege they were going to specifically address the camera pan? I was trying to look for some confirmation about that specifically. Was thinking about looking for a dev on Twitter to ask.

I would wonder how many crashes are from Steam users vs GOG users. My roommates and I have had a total of one single freeze between the three of us.

PC crashes / horrendous optimization would be nice. An explanation as to how top of the line Kepler cards are getting obliterated other than "its tessellation" would also be nice.

note: Obviously tessellation does play a factor, but not to the magnitude in the performance differential we are seeing.

Very very interesting article. So hear's what I grabbed from the interview.

1) 2013 footage was "captured" from PC. Could mean that the PC couldn't run it at decent framerates, so they captured it.

2) There were 2 engines. a) More robust and consistent across different lighting scenarios (the version we have now), b) less robust and required a complete dynamic lighting system in order to look good in all lighting scenarios (this was the one shown in 2013).

3) All the added global smoke and transparency system would have killed any hardware today, so it was scrapped.

4) The footage in 2013 wasn't in a game that was open world yet.. so it was playing in a limited environment compared to now.

5) The data streaming from the old engine was too much for hardware to maintain a reasonable fps.

6) Consoles had to be supported in order to get the budget to make such a huge game.

7) I assume the foliage being shaded in the 2013 wasn't going to work once the game extended to open world status.

Unbelievable that they thought it was acceptable to release a game that needed 600+ bug fixes.

Feels like I have to wait weeks now after a game launches to get the ideal experience.

Sharpening is the secret sauce

Someone ask them on twitter if they'll consider a toggle for camera auto-center.

It's my primary gripe with the game. Drives me fuckin nuts. I wish I was on PC so I could just wait for a mod.

Just Western games? Bloodborne took around a month to get the load time and game breaking coop fixes in.

Hard to imagine they've fix much in the last week that they couldn't before. I wouldn't mind if they toned down some graphics on the consoles to get the performance smooth though.

I'm having way too much fun with the game to shelf it until a patch that may or may not help performance comes out though.

Hoping they fix the Kepler cards' Hairworks performance. Something is off when people are rolling back their drives and getting performance boosts.

Nice. Shame they want to wait for the consoles to get certified before providing patches on PC.

I've been calling this one before but I'll do it again now - the PC version is going to get Vulkan and DX12 renderers eventually, and those cut graphical features are going to come back

Console as well, but I'd take a guess they will not be the same per platform

This would make me so happy.

I won't be playing too much this week because of school, but I hope they address font sizes and camera issues. Only thing I care for, everything else runs fine.

I don't think it's 600 bugs.. rather 600 changes to the game. I'd imagine a lot of it has to do with new feature requests and optimizations to various things (not just graphics). And for such a large world (I can't think of any game that's as large in scope and rich in content), 600 probably seems small.

Hey... btw so much for that next-gen wolf. Whatever happened to that? Just a PC thing?

The game's definitely fun. But when people say it's a looker. Man, I disagree a lot. Maybe it's because I recently played GTA which can be quite a looker with a ton going on, but I just don't see it as that good looking. Or even AC Unity(when the FPS was stable). I got a 'wow' playing it on PC even on medium settings, but so far I've yet to see anything close to a wow with 3 in terms of graphics other than there being lots of foliage. Like the interior of that inn at the start? Awful looking. I'm sure I'm bieng hyperbolic, but I was surprised at how bad that inn looked.

And I think the animation is pretty bad.

PLEASE. FIX. THE. INVENTORY. FREEZING.

Also, glitching to my dead body after I press load latest save is pretty sucky too

Don't use the in game FPS limiter - use RSS instead. That solved all my freezing problems.

I tried every other support culprit (Borderless Mode, Vsync) and the only fix was the above.

Please, that's par for the course. You don't really think that when a dev puts a simple "bug fixes" line in their patch notes that they're only talking two or three items? Ever read the patch notes for Elite:Dangerous? That's a dev that lists out every single change that's in a patch, and it's hundreds of items every time. Not necessarily all bug fixes, either, just a list of everything they changed, most of which no one here will even have the foggiest idea what they're talking about.
