Maggie Gyllenhaal: At 37 I was 'too old' for role opposite 55-year-old man

But in general, looking at many different roles, it's a pattern.

Culturally people only dated within their own race. It's been that way forever and let's be honest, for a lot of people out there, it still is. Its far less common to see interracial couples than same-race couples.
Of course it's a pattern. The thing is that attractive people sell well. And generally younger = more attractive.

For those that actually looked at the article, they also mention some other (recent) noteable issues.

That's exactly what it was. The movie was based on a novel in which a 55 year-old man is in love with a mid-20's woman.

Makes sense why they proceeded with their casting choices.

Has that been confirmed?

Still a problem in Hollywood even if it's "too old looking." Older guys and younger women is fine but not the other way around?
Men just tend age slower. Some of it is biology, some society, but that's just how it is nowadays.

Pretty much. This was Halle at 35:

She's still pretty much killing it at 48.

Not at all. Even the article I posted in the OP says that she did not name the production or the actor in question. She just mentioned this situation in an interview.

Emma Stone has two of these coming out just this summer alone!
Yup, although those are relatively less egregious than many Hollywood cases, with only ~14 year age differences.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has the face of a mom, regardless of her age.

A mom, but not my mom, so it's still pretty sexy. Regardless, she's certainly not 'too old'. The thing is how old is her character supposed to be? I mean, if the 55 year old is dating a 22 year old, then yeah, she's probably too old.

So I guess I'm the only one who thinks Maggie is quite attractive?
No, I'll watch Secretary any day of the week.

my mom looks younger then mags, and mags has a 500 dollar an hour makup witch, I'm sure.

Mags is still ok though, I've seen her yoga workouts, she's in pretty good shape(fit bod), and she's still pretty.

For whatever it's worth, Kate Beckinsale and Gillian Anderson are both over 40 and both really, really, really, really sexy IMO.

In their defense, Maggie Gyllenhaal looks like a dog at this point.

I don't think this is necessary.

Oh. Well doesn't that drastically change the story? I wasn't aware that the part inherently called for a larger age difference between the couple. I don't think Gyllenhaal would make a convincing 20 something year old either (though maybe it could work with some extra exercise ad a bit of make-up maybe?). That said, the fact that women get shit on for their age/looks more than men is a societal fact and pretty unfortunate :(

I need to start watching this woman's show

Meanwhile, Helen Mirren continues her decades-long laugh...

there was like one good pic of her in a bathing suit that went viral a couple years ago and people liked it because her boobs were looking huge. In the pic you posted, she actually looks like a 70 year old woman with zero sex appeal.

Would love to see that person's source though since ya know Maggie didn't name the movie or producer.

Total bullshit. It's 100% ridiculous to call Maggie Gyllenhaal "ugly" like holy fuck. SOmeone called her a dog for pity sake.

It's more ridiculous to find her attractive than to find her unattractive. Someone being an actor or actress doesn't warrant overpraising their looks.

...she's got enough momentum that I'd probably follow her into the dark, though.
but
Maggie gets by on Secretary and her sesame street appearance, I'd still paddle her heinie.

I don't see a problem..? what is it you're trying to say?

Some of you guys I feel are contributing to what must seem like a pretty hostile environment to girls and women, who I assure you are present and reading these forums, heh.

Calling women dogs and tearing down their appearance, even if that specific person isn't present, just really isn't cool. I don't know who you guys think you are.

Before the topic was deleted from /r/movies, here was a comment about it:

Taken from the comments on the article: "Can I add an important disclaimer. The film in question, was an adapation of a book. About a 55 year old man dating a women in her early 20s. Shouldn't we start questioning why 37 year old actresses are applying to play the role of a 22 year old women?" I don't know anything about the book, but I feel that this is important information. edit: Definitely worth noting this information isn't confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. I've only seen a couple comments on the article mentioning this without actually naming the book the film is apparently based off.

So saying she's not ugly, definitely doesn't look 50 and isn't a dog is overpraising her looks? At worst she looks average, average is not ugly, average is not looking 50 at 37, average is not looking like a dog.

Jesus.

Ok Cupid has analytics that show that, while women and the standards of what they are attracted to develop with age, men of all ages consider women in their 20s to be the most attractive. Pretty much universally. Marketing figured this out a long time ago.

It sucks, but thats the double standard theyre up against.

I imagine that's biological in some sense: women are fertile in their 20s and men can reproduce pretty much until they die and older men are frequently of better means.

Since when is it not cool to say a woman is unattractive? I don't find her attractive, being a famous actress has no effect on how I see her.

People have different tastes, news at 10.
