Can EA continue using FIFAs toxic brand?

After the fun and games of this morning only being the tip of the ice berg are we going to have another Tiger Woods situation here for EA?

FIFA is one of the most successful gaming brands in both sales year after year. Obviously they will continue using it.

It's like to ask Nintendo to stop making Mario games.

You are overestimating the impact that today's events have brought. FIFA with Blatter is still intact. Average user will keep buying that shit.

Also even if world cup is held in Qatar, millions of people will still watch it.

Given that currently it's the only way they can officially licence all the players, teams cups etc yeah, they'll be sticking with it.

Also - while the arrests might have raised the profile of FIFA corruption in places where football isn't the biggest sport, it's had an appalling rep across the EU and especially the UK for years. Doesn't stop the game being popular.

Even without Blatter, FIFA = Football pretty much anywhere. No matter how hard the people on top will be hit, it will continue to exist and be the umbrella over all football worldwide. Just with different, at best slightly less corrupt, faces.

As disgustingly corrupt and shameless high ranking FIFA officials are, including the master crony Blatter, there's no chance in hell EA are give up using that title as it's too valuable a brand for the game.

I wonder how much EA pay FIFA in licensing too?

I'm sure Blatter pockets half of that money.

FIFA is the one franchise that I expect to last basically forever. Really can't see any possibilites that this series might stop someday

I don't see how the games will be affected. FIFA isn't going anywhere and I don't see EA giving up on FIFA games.

Perhaps if it were called 'Sepp Blatter's FIFA 2015', or had that cunt's ugly head on the cover.

Alas, that isn't the case. But we can dream OP!

What events? I think a lot of people simply don't follow these things too closely. I know I don't. Since you ask if they can, they can and they will until people stop buying the game.

They took Tiger Woods face off the cover of their Golf game the iteration after he was causing a bit of a scandal by having a lot of sex, and then subsequently rebranded the series as a whole.

I think FIFA is a bit more complicated. All the licenses for the clubs and the players' names and likenesses is tied up in the FIFA license, whereas their deal with Tiger Woods was in addition to their license from the PGA.

I suspect the majority of the customers for the game don't give a damn about the current events, certainly not enough to avoid buying the game that they like.

In the bigger picture, the real question is "Will FIFA survive?", not "Will EA continue to license FIFA?". Seems like there is going to be serious trouble ahead for everyone at the top.

There has always been alot of turmoil surrounding the leadership at FIFA, but most gamers don't care. FIFA is synonyms with football, not some old geezers...

It´s not like FIFA started being corrupt just a few days ago.

It´s been going on AND it was well know for decades.

Didn´t hurt EA so far - probably wont hurt them in the future.

I only usually buy one football game per console cycle usually about half way through, i used to change everytime between FIFA & PES but the last few times i have gone for FIFA as i prefer it more, i think it would be better if the license was not a exclusive one.

Too bad the target audience for this game is mostly young kids and males with less to no interest in politics. FIFA will continue to sell gazillions of units and nearly no costumer will think about the witch hunt for homosexuals in Russia or the fact that more "slaves" are going to die building the stadiums in Qatar than the Pyramids in Egypt...

As things are right now, no, I don't see them dropping it. Everyone knows FIFA is corrupt. If these investigations lead to bigger things then... maybe?

it's like to ask Nintendo to stop making Mario games.....if Mario was a real-life murderer, owner of slaves, etc.

are you guys actually serious?

Selling tickets illegally, corruption, shady deals, etcetc

The should incorporate the corruption techniques as a game feature.

At least it'd be fun then.
  • Pay 100,000 credits to have the opposing team forfeit.
  • Pay 200,000 to have your worst player killed in secret.
  • Pay 500,000 to become the world champion without playing a single match.
Now calculate this into microtransaction revenue. I can imagine EA people feverishly masturbating at this thought already.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Of course they can and will continue using it. FIFA's horrendous corruption didn't stop people watching the World Cup and it won't stop them buying the game.

Don't give them ideas!

Any international football fan who didn't think FIFA was corrupt already is probably also a global climate change denier. Hopefully this leads to corrections to their BS practices and suppression of less cash plentiful market teams.

Yep, this. Don't really have more to add.

Yeah. That's a totally apt comparison if Nintendo had been mired in corruption for the last two or decades and had been radided by the FBI and Swiss authorities this morning.

Of course EA *can* but is it right to? What does it say for EA to continue dealing with FIFA when FIFA are seemingly mired in corruption. And lol corruption exists everywhere isn't an answer.
It wouldn't even set a precedent as numerous corporations have ended deals with FIFA recently: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/s...renew-2018-world-cup-russia-article-1.2089235 http://www.wsj.com/articles/sony-pulls-world-cup-sponsorship-1416901673

The football you see on the field is a long way from the suits getting arrested for corruption. It'll survive easily.

I was thinking about this in the morning actually, it's funny. But i personally see the FIFA and EA's Fifa as 2 seperate things

No one is going to care. In my opinion, the mainstream players of FIFA honestly don't care about the politics of it all, they will just ask for more

The FIFA brand has been toxic for decades. The organisation is riddled with corruption. I don't know why these new revelations would change anything.

Calling it FIFA suggests that it is the official football game.
Having all the licenses is strongly connected with this and counts for most players.
Building a new brand name is far too risky and expensive.
Also, FIFA is so mighty, they will survive every scandal.
It's like Shell and the Brent Spar. Everyone forgot about it and life goes on.

No it isn't. The FIFA license gives them four letters on the front of the game and that's it. They'd also have a deal with FIFA for the World Cup license, but that's it. The licensing for the players and clubs have nothing to do with FIFA.
