I miss backwards compatibilty

I don't know if I really liked PS3 and XB360 that much, or what. However if I could play those games, especially from digital library, on the new consoles I would really enjoy that. I know with different chip sets, processors, etc that prevented this from being practical.

Playing games from last 10 years on new system would have been stellar.

Edit - Added comment: If MS, with Windows 10 and new DEV kits, can get Apple iOS and Android Apps to convert easily to Windows OS, and they can deploy these to phones, PCs, and XB1, why can't they make it available to developers to easily convert their 360 games? Especially Live Arcade?

Would have been nice to have the option but i dont replay games much if at all and id rather not have to pay more than what both systems originally launched at.

PS4 and XB1 may have been $599 at launch if they were backwards compatible, possibly, I'm not entirely sure

Always keep old systems. Always.

My main TV is swamped with electronics and pulling enough power as it is. I even tried to stack my PS4 on top XB1 and the XB1 fans started whining at game startup, due to too much heat. (Or maybe it knew it had PS4 riding it's back and was rejecting it). Would love to have PS3 and XB360 there too but just not practical. I guess I will just need to have 2 entertainment units setup with 2 TVs in the future then. But then I think wait, wouldn't have been just awesome if these new systems were backwards compatible? Thus I wrote this thread.

Yeah, I miss it too. I didn't use it that much, but sometimes you just wanna replay an old game.Even though I have a Wii U and PS4, I still keep my PS3 and Wii connected so I can play my PS1, PS3 and GC-games from time to time.

What I think is interesting is the fact that Sony has a patent on a pretty much cost perfect solution (PS3 dongle connected to PS4 by USB), yet they don't think there's market for that since it is not released or even announced.

There probably isn't much of a market for that but I'd definitely buy one.

This. It's only really ever come in handy for me when I needed to fill time at launch for new games, however at this point I just wait until a system has at least two exclusives I really want and if I feel the need to go back to something I just keep the original console, but that hardly happens I am not the most nostalgic guy to begin with.

You & me both. The only reason I managed to play Knights of the Old Republic was because it was compatible with the Xbox 360, I wasn't going to buy an original Xbox years later just for one game.

I liked the fact PS1 games could be played on the PS2 as well, likewise PS1 games can be played on the PS3, which is always handy.

I would never understand how someone could argue against backwards compatibility when it's literally a feature which benefits the player.

Yeah it's quite nice. I just picked up Mario Galaxy 1/2, Twilight Princess and Trauma Center thanks to the Wii U being backwards compatible. Looking forward to what I missed out on.

Yeah, I used to be exactly like that.

I'm over it now, glad my old consoles are safely stored in the attic, available at any time (but practically never used).

I'd love to fire up BF3 to enjoy old maps after playing BF4 for hours. Heck maybe even some players still playing BFBC2 hanging out on 1 server.

I miss Castle Crashers.

Another option that would be nice, is if the DEV kits allowed developers to import last gen games and compile them, then release digitally at cheap price. I would buy these games again for less than $10 digitally.

If MS, with Windows 10 and new DEV kits, can get Apple iOS and Android Apps to convert easily to Windows OS, and they can deploy these to phones, PCs, and XB1, why can't they make it available to developers to easily convert their 360 games? Especially Live Arcade?

Also maybe there is more people missing backwards compatibility this time around, because last gen was do damn long and thus had greater amount of potential games they love.

Yep.

Sony and Microsoft could have had huge digital libraries from day one if they had included a backwards compatibility solution.

I guess they chose remasters over adding to the expense of the console. But I'd still pay extra for a backwards compatible console / add on for Xbox One and PS4. I would have bought both consoles day 1 if they had the feature. Still waiting to buy a PS4, only bought an Xbox One because of the Master Chief Collection.

I love playing old games, but hate having all the machines hooked up.

With the rise of remasters and PSNOW I doubt we'll ever see backwards compatibility ever again. Nintendo is our only hope.

I do too, as personally its what made the PS3 OG so much more versatile. Really wished that the PS4 could at least play the PS2 PSN downloads...

...I read that as "I miss Squidward" at first.

OT: I always keep old systems, but it's nice to have the option.

Yeah I really hope X86 means we get BC for the next set of consoles. Even on Wii U I'm annoyed because I can't use the gamepad and I just hate wiimotes, even with classic controller, they're such an annoyance when I just want to play a game.

I jumped from 360 to PS4 and missed out on a lot of good exclusives from last gen; it would be nice to be able to play them but not if the console would have been $100 more at retail.

I'd honestly pay like £100 for a SEGA CD/360 HD-DVD style attachment that contains the old consoles' innards. Considering how small the PS3 and Xbox 360 got, and since the HDD, Blu-Ray and power supply wouldn't be a problem, I don't see why this isn't possible (other than Sony wanting to cover their investment in Gaikai).

Edit: i remember when the PS3 first came out, the game I played most on it was God Of War 2, and I got a 360 late, but I remembered being told a lot of people did the same with Halo 2.

I have a ps4 and a 360. I can have the best of both worlds. Play awesome new games or go back and play the oldies.

I do miss some ps3 exclusives but I'll get over it

No idea what you are talking about, OP.

But hey, the average customer has decided that he/she doesn't give a shit about it. I do, that's why I bought the consoles that I bought.

Have a PS4 and a PS3 hooked up. So it doesn't really bother me. The only thing that does irritate me is needing to hook up a PS2 as well. But there's enough space in the living room for all of it, so I don't really care.

Yeah, Wii U has "bc", but its not as convenient as bc in past systems. I don't even bother using it.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
Going from Atari to NES/Sega Master System to SNES/Genesis to N64 to Gamecube...

I grew to not really care. I didnt even think about BC back then.

The PS2 spoiled me. With the PS3 and 360 I grew to not really care. I barely used previous gen games on my PS3 and 360. Maybe because I too also keep older systems. I still have a PS2 and orig Xbox.

Yea that is kinda annoying. Its a pro n con with it on the Wii U. If getting rid of BC means a console moves forward with features, specs and lowers the price...so be it. I was so glad when the cartridge era ended. In theory it shoulda meant more BC when it ended but it didnt.

I guess the story here is if you are into Nintendo recent consoles, BC isnt a problem.

Backwards compatibility is great. But for me its just a bonus, not a necessity since I dont sell old systems. For people who are space limited and/or need an extremely streamlined entertainment center I can really empathize how much this feature is missed. If its any consolation, I believe we may have a higher chance of BC moving forward since the PS5/XBone2 will likely use x86 arch (Zen based?) So it should be a relatively simple matter to include some form of BC in the next gen.

I miss it, too. Though I must admit that I haven't used the function on my Wii U, my PS4 would have more use in the last few months other than being the voice chat for Mario Kart. And even if I keep all of my old consoles, ports on the TV are limited.

It's a nice feature but I rarely used it. The most I ever did was in the early PS2 days bit that was mainly because I didn't have enough money to buy new games.

Same here, really don't like having to maintain multiple consoles and multiple sets of controllers. I would love to slim down my setup.

(looks at Wii U, 3DS, PC, Vita).

I don't.

I actually just played The Last Story on my Wii U.

It's your own fault for buying a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Don't support practices that you don't like.

I have backwards compatibilty on my ps3 and my wiiU. That said.....i never used it once. If asked, i always say that bc is very important to me, but lately i start to doubt myself. I never use it when it is actually implemented.

Oh, there's no way to keep them all in action. I swap mine out as needed. My oXbox got relegated to storage when I hooked my Saturn back up.

But I never part with them.

Having one console hooked up to your TV > having two consoles hooked up to your TV.

I actually have five consoles hooked up to my TV, but if Sony and MS ever considered releasing 'premium' SKUs of PS4 and Xbone with PS3/360 components in them, I'd totally go for those because it'd really help me out.

Yep, Wii U rocks.

BC is the reason I've kept my hand me down PS2, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and PS360. I have no reason to jump into current gen if there are games still being released late into the last gen console cycle.

Fuck paying 400 for a PS4/XB1 without a substantial BC option. I'll wait to see who figures out the BC issue first before I buy.

I can't afford to pay Day 1 full price on every new game release.
