Bethesda: "Please Stand By" (aka obvious Fallout teaser) [maybe not crossgen]

Which platform will you play Fallout 4 on?

I remember Carmack saying that Id tech won't work too well for open world games like Fallout and Skyrim because of texture and loading issues. You can bet that F4 is running on heavily modied versions of Gamebryo/Creation engine. It'd make more sense for them to build off of what they have now. Plus the engine is still the one to go to, for better or worse, when it comes to making an open world game with so much volume.

Yeah come to think of it, I vaguely remember something like that. But RAGE is fairly decent in handling an open-world nature, albeit with streaming issues due to reading off PS3 Blu-ray and Xbox 360's DVD, but now that we have HDD streaming and Bethesda/id Software can optimise for HDD-streaming better, it might have solved *some* of the issues with that.

Thinking now, if they had id Tech 5/6, it wouldn't (as is) be open to modding and Bethesda are good at handling mod support for the Fallout/Elder Scrolls games, so that goes against that.

Someone on Reddit found this; code for pre-order stuff for PC, PS4 and X1. Nothing for last gen systems.

Yeah, I never believed it was cross-gen for a minute. Especially after what happened with AC.

Now hopefully people will calm down for a bit.

Regardless of the Reddit image, Bethesda is releasing SOMETHING cross-gen at E3
F3 Remaster cross-gen and Fallout 4 Next-Gen only maybe?

What are some examples of things developers didn't do in the next-gen version because of cross-gen?

No details but this is what a member of the Far Cry 4 team said about last generation flat out having an impact on current gen versions

“Our mandate as a graphics team was to lead on current-gen, keeping the last-gen engine the same as what shipped Far Cry 3. That gave us a lot of constraints as we had to keep the last-gen working, which affected a lot of our decisions throughout the project.

Obviously. Everyone knew this game already existed and was going to come eventually. It being possibly crossgen is the bigger deal and frankly, it's a bummer if it's true.

This game started full development in 2011, right after Skyrim launched, two years before current gen consoles went on sale. It had been in pre-production since Fallout 3 launched in 2008, five years before current gen consoles went on sale.

If I was developing a game that was reliant on selling 10 million + copies, releasing sometime near the start of a new console cycle, I'd probably gamble on making it cross-gen too. They had to make a decision on this two years before the current gen launched, if not earlier than that. I can't blame them, as much as it sucks for us as gamers.

Well we know this won't be an RPG, just an action adventure game with a superficial leveling system and the illusion of choice. Hopefully the world and gameplay are great at least.

New Vegas was infinitely better than 3 (and Skyrim). It had a much more interesting story and real choice with real consequences.

What's Bethesda's (the publisher not the developer) recent history about cross-gen releases. Sorry I'm lazy but figure someone know off hand.

You act like Bethesda is the right choice developer wise for this game. It should be Obsidian.

I know :( But, at this point Ill take anything. I loved FNV and I think its a way better game than FO3, but I still enjoyed 3 so whatever. Ill take it lol

This would be glorious, and give Elder Scrolls players something (other than TESO) to hold onto.

Not going to lie but I'd be down for it on PS4. Like you said tie some people over until the sixth entry and PS3 owners got shafted on the game anyway with technical issues.

Wasn't it a year ago when their site "had a bug" and listed Skyrim for PS4 and Xbone?

Rage was just large instanced areas linked together. Not in the same vein as Fallout. Plus, the real challenge with Fallout and Skyrim is the volume. Not just in terms of size of the world, but all the items, enemies, and locations in the game. Not many engines can properly keep track of all the details (books, loot, etc) that are scattered about the world. Not considering what happens to it after a player spends hundreds of hours exploring.

The good news with Creation/Gamebryo is that it's heavily moddable. So despite the hiccups, it's still a great base for some greater. With id tech, modders would have to learn new tools and keep in mind of the limitations that this new tech has.

Exciting times if it is Fallout 4. More exciting if it's new gen only.

Skipped Vegas, but loved 1 and 3.

I know, opinions and all that... but how... what... 2 and NV. Two of the best games ever. 1 is great too of course. 3 is all right.

Yeah, I'll just stick witth opinions and all that.
