Black Tusk Studios renamed to "The Coalition"

I kind of don't like that we have 3 studios only producing one franchise each. That really narrows down the variety and can easily over saturate the market with the franchise if they are looking to put out a game every year or two.

Turn10 partner with Playground to make something different in the franchise to provide variety

Some people act like it's some terrible sweatshoplike situation to work at these companies which focus on one franchise. Like all creativity and free will is stripped from these companies. Calling these factories and all that.

Man, people hate change or they like to complain, or both. I don't see why rebranding to better reflect your product is considered such a negative.

I like the design and the fact that it plays on the iconic chainsaws of GOW.

Sighs

"The Coalition" just sounds stupid...

perhaps i'm just so use to seeing studios at the end of most developer names, but even Coalition Studies seems to sound 10x better than this.

As for them becoming a gears studio....kinda already assumed that was going to be the case. I think the re branding MS does with these studios is a bit much, but i can see why some think its cool. And honestly down the road if any f these studios branch out into a new IP their developer name will be closely associated with a well known franchise despite not making the franchises into what they were before being handed control of the ips.

In related news, Naughty Dog has been renamed Nate Dog studios. When you hear Nate, think of the Drake. Oh yeah.

Not really, its on and off and fluctuates depending on what projects they currently have i think cause in 2012 and 2013 they released 4 internally developed games and 3 collab games.

2015 has 1 collab game released and no internal
yet

I'm just going of this Wikipedia list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCE_Japan_Studio
There seems to be a lot of collaborations from 2011.

There is nothing wrong about a studio collaborating with other projects. Microsoft Studios does also collaborate with their partners, but they usually do it under the publisher.

Ah, Shangheist. Wish we could've seen what it turned into.
It wouldn't be so bad if it were just the teaser but the game was actually in development for awhile, yes?
Coalition of the Willing?

Immediately thought of the same thing. The Coalition of what, exactly? Wait, duh, let's check Wikipedia!

A coalition is a pact or treaty among individuals or groups, during which they cooperate in joint action, each in their own self-interest, joining forces together for a common cause. ...Boring.
A coalition in economics refers to a group of companies that create a mutual trust between each other in order for increased profit.
...That's still sorta boring, although probably 100% accurate.
In the computer field, and in the study of cognition, the entities can be called agents or daemons. By definition, agents can form coalitions. ...Now THAT sounds better. I ignorantly choose to pretend this was the intention.

The logo is ok, and the name is kinda "OK" its just that the word -->the<-- ruins it. Just call it "Coalition Studios" instead of "The coalition"

Lol.

Congrats. 343 Industries is a great name.

343 Industries: We took our name from the lackey of an established hyperpower that was meant to look over Halo, only to go insane, try and kill the Master Chief and ultimately became responsible for its undoing!

The part I hate most about the name is that it's "THE Coalition." Sounds so stupid, Coalition Studios or something like that would be so much better.

Hell, just go with Coalition of Gears and be done with it.

At least they're living up to their namesake.

I'm happy to see a dedicated Gears studio. It means they plan to make the most of the investment they made when they bought the IP. People seem to forget that if anyone wants to make a game other than Gears, they can leave anytime they want and go do just that. The Respawn guys are a great example of that as are the countless Kickstarter campaigns finding success.

As a very big Gears fan, I'm pleased to see this happen as it suggests a real long-term commitment to one of my favorite game series.

It really is a disappointing name change. And yeah, the implication that they are now "THE GEARS STUDIO. WHEN YOU THINK COALITION, YOU THINK GEARS AND NOTHING ELSE" is super upsetting.

I like Black Tusk more. Sounds more like a game studio.

'The Coalition' sounds like some TV show.

I was just going off my head, but 3 collabs in 2011 isnt what i would call alot, but then 2010 had 4 internally developed and 4 collabs it seems. Like i said it looks like it fluctuates depending on projects and releases.

But yeah i dont think there is anything wrong with collaborating with other projects. I mean counting studio japan theres also SSM which is helping with other smaller projects and Foster City Studio helps with external studios who work on first party games.

Eh I'm indifferent toward the name but I'm glad they've clarified the focus on Gears. Not that I don't want new IP from Microsoft but they need to make sure they get Gears right.

Judging by the teaser it was probably in a really, really early preproduction state.
I thought MS said it was just a concept or did that end up not being true? Either way, I hope it's something that they eventually revisit for a new IP.

Maybe beause you do not get what I am trying to do.. I do not care about "Sony too", my message is: "When they get bored new IPs will come"

I don't really disagree with your message but I honestly wasn't sure why CD was in there when the rest of your list was compromised of Sony studios.

Halo factory, Forza factory, Gears factory. The trilogy is complete.

I'm saying this assuming "factory" had a negative connotation:

There's no problem with dedicated franchise studios if the result is well-reviewed and popular games. Particularly when the staff behind it choose to be there for that reason.

So they WANT to be associated with a single IP? That's putting all their eggs in the gears basket. Are they that sure the IP will be relevant 5-10 years down the line? Hmmmm

Given the timing, I guess we should expect a gears announcement at E3

I agree. On the other hand, when a developer has proven to be capable, sometimes gamers will want to see a little variety from them.

In this case, I think it's good news. Microsoft is showing commitment to the IP and the studio behind it. Ask me again after the next Gears game is out.
