Black Tusk Studios renamed to "The Coalition"

Come on guys... The Coalition? Don't you have a friend with some sense to bounce ideas off of? I'd rather have any one of these studio names:

  • ChainSaw Studios
  • The Black Locust
  • Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 200
  • COG - like many mentioned

Ahhh whatever.. just make a good game. Black Tusk was a fine name. Random and ok. The Coalition sounds like something the Phantom would go up against in a series of comics.

The logo is fine though. Looks cool.

Microsoft Vancouver > Black Tusk > The Coalition. It's their third name and still didn't launch a single game.

So does this mean The Coalition will attempt to take control the White House? xP

In all seriousness, it sounds more like a political party/faction than a game developer.

The Coalition does sound rather odd. I immediately thought that before even reading this thread. It just sounds weird.

I thought Black Tusk was a fantastic name and unique.

Remedy very much wanted to do Alan Wake 2 but MS turned it down. There's very little to disagree with here.

But that still doesn't somehow suggest that they're any less passionate or excited about Quantum Break is what I'm saying. And not being their first choice doesn't mean they'd much prefer to be making an Alan Wake sequel. When they likely pitched an Alan Wake sequel who knows if they even had Quantum Break in mind, but

This is how things work a lot of times. You make a pitch, it isn't accepted, and then you go back to the drawing board and see what ideas you can come up with that not only the publisher may like, but something that the team as a whole can also get excited and passionate about, and unless Quantum Break is somehow in a strange development hell, I think Remedy is likely happier for having gone with the development of Quantum Break over Alan Wake 2. Remedy always struck me as a team that enjoyed a challenge, and Quantum Break, when you factor in that time stutter mechanic they're going for and the different ways they plan to utilize time in action as well as adventure based gameplay, seems like it will have plenty to keep them busy. The game, based on what they plan to do, likely has a number of impressive set pieces along similar lines to what we saw in that bridge scene, which means the amount of work that has to go into a scene to set all that up is probably a more serious undertaking than people realize.

Based on what I've seen so far, Quantum Break isn't at all very far removed from the type of game that Remedy likes to make. It's firmly in their wheel house, and if they pull it off as good as they can, it could end up being the best game they ever made.

Black Tusk Studios is certainly a better name. They were going to make a new IP game.

Now being called "the Coalition" and responsible for churning out Gears of War games from what they were going to do is kind of sad.

Gotta love an industry that forces you to restart anytime you get screwed over.

Changing places is actually common in any industry, a modern engineer would usually switch job every 5 years (which would be the development cycle for one or two major projects). It's beneficial both to the employee, who can evolve his career, negociate better salaries and responsibilities, learn from new environments, and the companies, who will get new blood with its own experience and field of expertise.
As a matter of fact, when people stay at the same company for too long, there is a bigger risk of that company pumping out the same product again and again.

What a stupid name

Go look in the Dumbest Game Studio Names thread, youll see that pretty much every game studio name is stupid. Few studios made it outta that thread even remotely unscathed.
Naming a game studio is hard, really good ones are few and far between.

Here's a gif of the logo that wasn't filmed off a screen

I actually like the splash screen and logo, Its one of those splash screens that would make me excited to play whatever game was about to start.
I just hope they do something new with Gears of War, cuz im not jumping on any Gears of War remakes.
Give me the Pendulum Wars or something taking place elsewhere....not every hero has to save the world.

Gears was Gears because Epic games made it Gears.

Shoe-horning a completely different developer into taking over a franchise and having it be all they fucking do is such a shitty strategy and I don't understand why Microsoft is doing this again.
Just look at 343i, they will probably never touch Bungie when it comes to making Halo games but you can bet your ass it's all the team will ever do. You can't just put any team on any IP and squeeze success out of it by sheer force of will.

Have developers be free in what they want to create. How demotivating must it be to have just finished up Halo 4 and the very next week you're having to do mostly the same shit again working on Halo 5 and Halo 6 after that. Variety is the spice of life.

So they are only doing Gears now? Is there a chance they are getting a second team for different games (Shangheist)?

Pretty sure it's been stated multiple times that many people who worked on Gears are part of this studio under Rod Fergusson, so i'm thinking Gear will be just fine. Your "concern" isn't needed. Also it's funny how all these "demotivated" devs keep joining up with this studios knowing full well what they're going to be working on. One would think they would just go somewhere else. Odd...

Dropping "the" as others have said would sound better. But at the end of day, I dont play a studio name!

Oh yeah, make the shotgun a power weapon pick up please. Thanks!

They should just look back at Gear 3 MP and go from there.

Agreed. Gears was Epic. I can never change that in my head. The new splash is cool though.

The only good point for me is that it's still being lead by Rod Fergusson. The splash screen has that dark, gritty tone which I hope goes into the next Gears. We need horror! Also, Rod said they're never putting the sawn-off in a Gears game again, so hope is there for me.

If they take it's formula from cover and gnasher, they can do one.

You not seen the coalition team??? there pretty much the same team, loads of the gears team from epic moved over to the studio

Cannot wait to see some actual footage and get some news on what they are working on. It will put all this petty moaning over a simple name change in perspective. If their game is awesome, who cares what they will be called.

The only person who moved was Rod right? I suppose Rod is the most important as he'll be creating the vision for the game, although if the artists/level designers etc moved over, we'd see a very similar feel of the game.

Darn. I was hoping they wouldn't become a gears only studio. Guess Microsoft wants to make gears into an even bigger franchise like Halo/forza
