I don't know why I liked this level so much. Whenever I think of train levels in games, this is the first thing that comes to mind. I actually just started playing FP recently co-op, we just got to this level.
captain toad is quite good too. nice use of the limited space, carriages being able to be separated and pulling on the train horn <3
uncharted 2 is really good at the journey aspect of the train through the environment and moving around the physical space of the thing
i need to play tomb raider the last rev and splinter cell pt as i like the ida of proper platforming and stealth on a limited train location. a true design challenge.
Should have been the first post. This level is fantastic and the only one I've ever played that felt that the train was taking the player somewhere and not just looping a background over and over.
Crysis Warhead had a pretty fun train level. Sure, the train moves relatively slowly through the level and you absolutely can just sit there at the mounted machine gun the whole time, but why would you want to when you have the freedom to jump on and off the train at any time? Hop off and have a quick firefight with incoming Korean soldiers, hijack a humvee and then speed off down the road past the train bailing out of your stolen vehicle just before it slams into a guard post leaving you free to jump back on the train as it catches up.
Great set piece, also the stage that made me put the game down. 0 instructions on what to do, 4 people running around like headless chickens for 20+ mins. After we killed it, I could not be interested in the game anymore lol.
Oh shit, UT2k4 or 3 had cool levels where you were fighting from two trains moving in parallel but a bit spaced out or something? Just came back to me, good times.
The Phantom Train appealed to me because I had previously played Grim Fandango, which also features a train that takes souls to the afterlife, but it's only featured in cutscenes, so that doesn't count here. It's one of the big highlights of the game for me, and why I always choose Sabin's path first after getting split up.
On a side note, it's also indirectly how I got into the '80s horror anthology Tales From The Darkside.
Kalimari Desert is one of my favorite Mario Kart 64 tracks if only because of the train. Royal Raceway is still better. Plus a track with a real hazard.
I also want to throw in Slash Beast's stage from Mega Man X4.
Hardest of the choosable levels. Always the one I pick first because I am most likely to mess up on it. Really fun in 2P with someone who knows what they are doing.
Was thinking about this thread when I should not have been doing that. What about a level where you and your party or whatever the hell is going on struggle and fight in order to make it to a train (which is still running somehow, maybe some characters you met before got it going and it works because reasons, and let's be real -- like two sentences), but the train just goes away. Endless runner spinoff? Maybe. Where does the train go? Anywhere!
Then later on, like $120 in the player gets to go on the train and fight some dudes.
The opening to Wild ARMs 3 was a cool train sequence. The first battle where you can use the full party is a fight against train robbers on top of a moving train. It really suits the game's WIld West theme.
One of my favorite train levels that has not yet been mentioned is the train level from Little Nemo the Dream Master. Always got such a rush playing this level as a kid. Really tough, but rewarding to beat.
