Sony is officially helping with funding and development with Shenmue 3

I agree with all that. They should definitely close it

Disagree. The more money it makes on KS, the more money Sony is likely to invest in the project. Again, the KS is there only to judge interest. More money, more interest, bigger and better game.

What door is this going to open? Is it going to make more developers of dead franchises try to get funded by giving the game in return for backing it? If so the fans of those games will happily pay the money for it? if they feel like this is one of the few chances they have.

Or do people think publishers are going to ask for 5 million dollars to get Assasin's Creed or Elder Scroll's funded? Because I don't expect those games to ever get near their goals. Is it taking a lot of responsibility from Sony, because I was under the impression these games cost tens of millions to make and around 3 million doesn't seem to take any significant burden of of Sony.

Of course not. I don't contribute to any kickstarter
So you're asking for the cancellation of a campaign you never put a cent in?
I don't know about other backers, but I'd rather you stopped speaking for me.

I was happy with the premise of the KS when I chose to pledge this morning and I'm still happy with it. If anything, it sounds much more viable now than twelve hours ago.

I figured there must have been another source of funding. I hope this doesn't knock the wind out of the kickstarter.

at some of the complaints.

Preorder dlc? season passes? They just got people to pay over 2 million dollars during e3 in less then a day based off some nostalgia. Thats great guys. Hope you get the game you want.

People here acting like this was Activision kickstarting the next Call of Duty to gauge interest... You need to get some perspective.

We're talking about a new game of a 14 year old hiatus, "dead", blamed countless times for SEGA's downfall, almost industry joke status IP.

The fans have actually been asking for a kickstarter since it became a thing. This game most likely wouldn't have been possible in any other way. Not with just crowdfunding, not with little chance to find a publisher.

If putting my money upfront is the price to pay to revive a beloved IP that no publisher wants to touch with a stick, so be it.

I just know that my 13 year old self just shed some tears of joy with this announcement.

Sony should remaster the first two games in 1080p/60fps, put them on PSN and say all profits made from the sale of the games will go directly into development of Shenmue III.

I'm sure they're asking sega right now. What sega does is always a mystery these days though

Funniest thing about all of the people complaining I bet either A. Havent even backed the game or B.werent planning on getting it anyway. Or C. Are salty now it has no chance of being released on anything but pc and PS4. But I knoe If it were me getting that game for 30 bucks is a damn steal and now with Sony backing it means the game has a chance at having an even greater experience.

I can scarcely believe that we're finally FINALLY getting a full-fledged Shenmue 3 at some point in the future. If Sony is funding the development then it's not going to be a watered-down, cheap product like I initially feared could be a possibility, but rather an actual proper follow-up that fans have been dreaming of for 14 years.

This past day has been surreal. I'm still waiting to wake up.

However, can somebody explain the complaints over the use of Kickstarter?

People think Sony should pay for development of an IP that is a proven commerical failure, rather than use crowdfunding the guage interest and make their reasons for investing in an IP like that make sense on paper.

Kickstarter isn't ro "fund" development, it's to kick start projects. Get them off the ground. The Shenmue Kickstart did just that.

A deal that's only triggered if the KS is funded, meaning Sony couldn't confirm or deny the deal at the time of the conference.

the kickstarter says PC/PS4, no mention of Xbox

do you really think there was ever a scenario where they suddenly added "oh yeah Xbox is totes coming too! we just forgot"

ultimately the sneaky part is saying 'it's totally THEIR thing and we have nothing to do with it' when that's clearly not true to anyone paying attention or knowing how these things work, then announce that of course they are after the thing is succesfull

"yeah who cares Shenmue is here" blabla. Glad we're getting it - still think it's scummy and sets a weird precedent.

I'm not going to lie, that's extremely scummy. If you're going to do something like that, you should make it clear at the forefront - and cap it once you've reached your goal. Didn't they go on stage and say something along the lines of "We have nothing to do with this Kickstarter, but we wanted to give it some exposure?"

I'm still excited to be receiving Shenmue, but this is definitely a publisher/kickstarter dynamic that I'm not 100% in favor of. Dat Shenmue tho!

I never once claimed to speak for anyone but myself

This news isn't going to affect my pledge, I'm just happy someone is giving Suzuki some support no matter how big or small, guy just needed to catch a break for the first time in a decade.

The Sony guy never used the word funding in that video, he only said they'd help out with third party productions. It wasn't made clear what exactly what sony will help with.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
The announcement of Shenmue 3 gave me chills, insanity; however, it's the lack of transparency in relation to the funding of the title that left a sour taste in my mouth.

They needed to explain once they launched the Kickstarter how the funds would be appropriated and if ever $2 million was reached, well much like Bloodstained, a third-party publisher would complete the funding process.

They didn't do the above, and I think that's the point many want to share. To be honest, I'd love more Kickstarters where old properties are brought back to life, but like I mentioned, things needed to be much clearer and detailed on the production and publishing front.

This practice just rubs me the wrong way entirely - I think it's the first time a Kickstarter has been created with the developers KNOWING they have direct financial support from a multinational corporation?

Adam Boyes: "We have nothing to do with this!!!"

Shady.

Such a shame too, I love Shenmue and Yu Suzuki.

If you love Shenmue and Yu Suzuki then you should be happy.

People who are funding the game on Kickstarter are BUYING the game, they are not giving money to Sony for nothing, i can't see the issue here.

Wasn't this common practice? Were people expecting the game to be made on 2 million and Yu Suzuki's life savings? Corporate backers are not obligated to disclose themselves or the nature of their funding. Everybody is still getting what they paid for. Sony could've just as easily gotten away with not revealing this at all. Much ado about nothing imo

It was stated the funding was for the PC/PS4 versions of Shenmue 3. 2 million was super low for this kind of game. It was rather obvious that it was to gauge interest.

Gio Corsi quote:

"Absolutely. First off, Shenmue III was the number one ask on the whole #BuildingTheList campaign, so when that first started, right off the bat, 'Shenmue III, Shenmue III, Shenmue III.' So this has been an ask for as long as I've been at PlayStation. And we met with Suzuki-san at GDC last year and we started the long road to try and figure out how we were going to get this whole thing made.

"We said, 'the only way this is going to happen is if fans speak up,' and we thought Kickstarter was the perfect place to do this. So we set a goal for $2 million and if the fans come in and back it, then absolutely, we're going to make this a reality. So, Sony and PlayStation are definitely a partner in this game, and it's going to be run through Third Party Productions with Ys Net. We're going to get the game done. We're going to be partners the whole way, and we're really excited to see this thing come out in a couple of years."

And it is amazing that it is happening this way.

Shenmue is a well known financial failure. They needed to know if their was enough interest so they wouldn't get burned.
:lol that's a nice way to spin it. There's interest, the goal has been met, why not stop it now and just open a pre-order page? Because they want the free money whales give them

Yeah, no. It's kind of on Sony.

I felt genuinely sorry for the poor old guy when they brought him on stage to do his "Brother, can you spare a dime" thing.

He was going to do the Kickstarter regardless. And you should feel bad for him, the game was a financial failure on BOTH platforms it was on.

Both due to one tanking, and the other with a small install base and non Eastern game demographics.

I thought it was smart. You want that game made, you fans want it made, prove it.

And we did. Plus I say keep it open for the whole month, since we can get a $29 game that we know is 100% coming now.

Sony / Sega: "Thanks for the free focus test / development cost discount."

*proceed to tape their dicks up in $100 bills*

Enjoy your fruit of the loom quality merch, capsule toy or your name credited in a thirty minute long credits sequence nobody will watch

We will, and the game too! And you know what's also grand? YOU can enjoy the game too because of all of us. No need to thank. Just enjoy.

We're getting Shenmue 3 with a major platform holders support thanks to the outcry of support at the conference Kickstarter. Everything sounds good to me with the way it went down

they "would make sure it will happen". That can also mean that they provide a 2 year long supply of hardware and drink and food. But I think funds are more likely

AAA games that are selling millions upon millions back into development exceeding their budget is not going to turn to KS to fund half of their game. Huge publishers like EA nor Activision will even try something like that as they know their status and reputation, plus the licensing from the original creators are totally something they have to consider. It's never going to happen like this again.

How the fuck are people mad about this?

To me this is an absolutely smart way to possibly see more risky titles or other possible genre games publishers have grown weary of in modern times to renew confidence and get big money backing it.
