I think this is a very good thing. Hopefully this can help fans get back some of their beloved franchises. Anyway, i want Baldur's gate 3, not gonna happen i know but still.

This is new water here......Shenmue 3 is honestly one of the very, very few games that justify the Kickstarter treatment (as historically, that series is both expensive to make and not the strongest seller).

Not many other tittles justify that treatment, so Sony has to be very careful with selecting which games get this treatment. If they are not careful, not only will this give Kickstarter a bad image, but it will also spark other publishers into this idea.

"Why fully fund a game when the fans could partially fund it? Its not like we have the money to pay for it or anything....actually, we do, but we don't want to risk anything, as it could just not sell ;)" THAT could be the mindset publishers get pulled into and....that is toxic for everyone :(.

I have faith that Sony will be smart and selective about this....but this is new water being walked on, and they could drown in that same water too.

Well y'all can keep worrying. I'll just keep getting great games instead.

but I do agree with this sort of. Square Enix did something like that too didn't they? Would actually be pretty neat for Sony to put something together similar to that.
Yep.

For you.
Sony showing how strapped for cash they truly are.

... that's not how it works. They are not getting any money from Shenmue's Kickstarter, neither they will from any other (unless it's their IP or something)

I'm not trying to troll. Isn't it well known they they're in dire financial straits?

In a magic world where somehow absolutely all the money went to them in all the single projects they would help with, this wouldn't make any change to their "dire financial straits". Hell, in fact, the only thing it could accomplish would make their financial status worse.

And it wouldn't be a problem but development can fall through and you won't get the game or your money back.

If its for cult titles that would otherwise have no shot, then that is fine. If not, I hope they don't bother. Too early to judge at the moment since we only have Shenmue 3 to base our thoughts on. The next couple of titles they try (if they do) will determine how this thing will go.

Building a list doesn't mean anything is going to even come to fruition. Cautiously optimistic about this.

Perhaps they should kickstart Sony Worldwide Studios so they can start delivering titles in a timely manner instead of continued announcement of titles 2-3 years away while failing to deliver in the here and now

I thought the shenmue kickstarter was slimy but it got us a game we have been waiting years for.....this is just wrong and should be stopped

I think the overwhelming positive reaction caused by Sony's conference and their mythological announcements will be something that not only Sony, but also MS will try to emulate in the future.

Some neglected projects/franchises with rabid fanbases that could appear in the future are:

-Mega Man Legends 3
-Beyond Good & Evil
-Banjo-Kazooie
-Darkstalkers
-Silent Hill

I would sell my soul for a Kickstarter SynSophia (AKI) wrestling game to be the spiritual successor of No Mercy N64.

What is the issue? Who cares where the money comes from.

What is the difference if Joe Gamer is a funding or 7-11 Corporation is?

If it means more great games we all want, then bring it on!

1. DLC
2. "Exclusive preorder bonuses"
3. On disc content

And a plethora of other examples of publishers locking things behind premium paywalls nickel and diming consumers. Gamers are a very passionate bunch, I just don't want to see us as a community exploited. There are those of us well to do who can afford to submit one thousand dollars to Shenmue 3 and the ilk, but this Kickstarter philosophy can be either really amazing or really awful, and so far I'm not liking the odds where I trust a mega corporation with enough integrity to not ape me of all my income.

I see a lot of people already putting a stamp on this as the doom of Kickstarter and kinda jumping the gun.
Before deciding if something is good or bad, we need more details on this thing. What does "help launch" mean? We don't even know if they're talking about pure marketing stuff, promotion etc or funding.

There's simply too little information at this point.

It was more of a joke than anything. But I do think this is a practice that doesn't need to become a norm for them.

Imagine having backed The Last Guardian in 2007.
Failed kickstarters are not uncommon, but one that's co-funded by one of the biggest companies in the world? What would Sony do then?

How exactly is it wrong if people are willing to give their own money to make something that they want happen? What exactly is the problem with that? You don't have to contribute a penny if you don't want to.

Isn't CyberConnect2 thinking about an HD remake of the first game?

Well, there it is.

It will/has basically become a platform for developers to audition for publishers.

Which is funny because it started out as a platform for developers to be free from publishers.

The publishers will always win.

Yeah, this is also a fair point.

I look forward to next week's Jimquisition, I have a feeling Sterling is going to tear a new one into this, he's already intimated as such.

Yyyyyyep.

All that "oh come on, it's just a one-off, publishers wouldn't bilk us for cash like that repeatedly" starts to come off as pretty silly now, doesn't it?
They aren't bilking anyone. It is volunteery, is it not?

So, if they put a wipeout kickstarter up and no one backs it, you know the game is truly dead. If they put MML3 up and it gets funded, you know it's actually coming with published support. So I see no downside with this.

Honestly this is a very slippery slope to go down. Shenmue 3 is one thing, but I hope we don't see the random IPs that probably could be financially viable on their own accord kickstarted because- "Why not?"

Means to an end of interest gauging and low budget financing, at the end of the day. What's important is for us consumers to keep in mind the risk posed to us; the fact this fundamentally is a goodwill donation for a concept, and we're at the mercy of uncompleted projects or massive delays, or a result that is drastically distant from what we originally thought.

Barring creative control, I don't think there's anything wrong about the idea of corporate-backed crowdfunding; if anything it usually leads to more successful projects and better management through the process.

please shut the fuck up with your tired whining. in every shenmue thread you act like some paragon of financial reasoning. people are going to do what they want with their money. if the proposition is not good enough for you, don't back it. it's really that simple.
