Rock Band 4 announced for PS4 and Xbox One

The game is digital only. There were hints about that, but the fact there's no software-only bundle confirms it.

I thought they said that XB1 would need a special dongle (ala PS3) in order to use the old instruments.

The RB twitter feed seems to indicate that backwards compatibility for old instruments was still "in progress" and they wouldn't open up preorders for the standalone game (and dongle?) until it was ready.

They seriously need to figure this shit out.

The hardcore fans that used it are also among the biggest DLC purchasers.

I read on a Q and A that the midi kit will not be supported at launch. They are an indie studio and don't have the resources at this time for everything and this would have to wait until after launch.

Very, very, very, disappointing.

I am not sure what country you are from but the RB bundle counts in best buys GCU. So the game is 200 dollars if you are a member not 250. That is what I am planning to do.

Germany, so it's 300€... Also I might have to move out of country early next year so that's also a factor to consider haha

I may have a warped perception of the value though. I joined the Rock Band train by buying a year old RB2 (half price) and the RB1 hardware-only band kit which was like 40€ (new) back then.

Digital only? Eh? The only bundles here in the UK are the 'Band in a box' with RB4 on disc or the guitar with RB4 on disc :(

Really want to get it digitally but I also need a new guitar.

Standalone game came later for previous Rock Bands in the leadup to release, so not surprising it's not available yet. Probably figuring out who wants new instruments first.

Earlier in the thread, Nick posted this:

Last-gen compatibility with wireless hardware on new consoles is not a rumor; it's happening. PS3 to PS4 with the existing hardware/dongle; Xbox 360 to Xbox One with a low-cost dongle you can purchase. First thing's first is testing this with the instruments we made, but we intend to support as many of those legacy wireless instruments as possible.
We have to lock wireless first, as that hits the most users (there are far more wireless instruments out there than wired). Barring technical and software issues that might make it so we can't support a device, we'd like to support as much as possible, but we don't have anything to say or confirm beyond wireless instruments yet. Stay tuned!

So TLDR: Wireless instruments are a lock for both systems. They can't confirm wired yet.

Is there a special marketing deal with Microsoft again? I saw it briefly in their e3 sizzle reel and the Xbox twitter was talking about them I think yesterday.

They won't even confirm if practice mode is back, guys. I'd wait a while and see what the game has in it.

Harmonix is just being REALLY careful about what they confirm as in, even if it's an obvious guarantee it'll be there. I think they're trying to not tempt fate.

Because the only versions of the game you can get have to be bundled with instruments.

It's about as logical as it gets. And makes sense. Saves on costs, especially since it'll be a repeatedly patched/upgraded game.
You would be incorrect. Firstly, the bundle pictures on ALL the websites you can pre-order from clearly show a game case rather than a digital download card so I don't know why you would assume this especially since they are already having to have a physical box for the instruments. Why not just put a disc based game in there? Secondly, below is an interview with one of the guys from Harmonix who confirm both a digital and physical version of the game.

Per MadCatz: “The plan for hardware is just supporting these two bundles at launch. The earliest we’re looking at doing standalone hardware is Christmas or Q1 2016.”

They really, really need to make a digital version bundle available.

It says they are looking into it, but if they don't that really sucks because it likely means if you wanted the digital version, you probably can't get any new instruments this year.

At the very least make a digital bundle with the digital game and legacy adapter.

Yeah, I agree. I was just replying to the guy saying the game was digital only which it is definitely NOT. If you just want the game though, you will at least have the option of digital or physical at launch. If you are like me, you are hoping for a "bundle" that includes the "low-cost" XBox360->XBox One dongle and a digital copy of the game. I'm sure that is a pipe-dream though as that scenario is probably pretty rare...

Also, at least if you wanted digital and new instruments you could just buy the full bundle, sell the physical game unopened and then just buy the game digitally as that will be available day-one standalone.

If Practice mode isn't even in then idk what to think.

That would be a pain to do, as I'm not sure if there would be much audience for the standalone disc copy. I'd probably be taking a loss too.

I just hope the legacy adapter is out in time in reasonable quantities to satisfy demand. I'm nervous about that.

I'm really surprised they didn't run a Kickstarter. I would have definately thrown a few hundred their way.

According to the RockBandAide E3 interview with Aaron Trites

Rock Band 4 Hardware

What hardware purchase options will be available at launch?

Guitar and disc bundle
Band in a Box bundle
Xbox One Legacy Adapter
For those who bought PAX East guitars, those will be delivered by October 6th
Standalone disc
Digital download

What hardware will not be available at launch?

Standalone guitar
Standalone drums
Standalone mic
Any bundle featuring a digital download code for the game, rather than a disc[This isn’t a locked-in option, but they are looking at it]

What happened to my preorder colors?

“The plan for preorder colors had been to give certain colors to certain retailers. Unfortunately, the problem that popped up was one of stock. Giving certain places certain colors constrained sales, both limiting how many large retailers could get, and what would happen in other areas of the world like Europe who don’t have those retailers. Factories would also have to be slower when it came time to swap back over to black, so in the interest of having instruments out there, we had to delay alternate colors. They aren’t cancelled, MadCatz is very excited about different-looking instruments, but we had to decide between giving people the ‘wrong’ color and people not getting anything.”

Where is the Xbox One Legacy Adapter?

“It is still being worked on. We have it set up for our own instruments, but it’s a surprisingly complicated process, we’ve been having to locate the people who coded the 360 chipset a decade ago. A lot of the features and design are still upcoming, we may even trip into some unexpected usage of them.”

“Like plain controllers since they have colored buttons?”

“Maybe! Even our guys working on it shrug when we ask about future compatibility. It’s a very unique piece of hardware, we’re all seeing where it goes.”

“According to many people, wired instruments will not work, is the Adapter going to have USB ports?”

“The design is not finalized at this time.”

What hardware will not be available at launch?

Standalone guitar
Standalone drums
Standalone mic
Any bundle featuring a digital download code for the game, rather than a disc[This isn’t a locked-in option, but they are looking at it]

Will Practice Mode be in the game?

“Maybe. Most of the use came from the hardcore players working towards FCs. Again, game’s still in development, we’ll see as we go.”

RBA Interview
Out of all the news/interviews that has come out of E3, this interview is probably the best source of information. Nobody else has asked these questions yet on Reddit/NeoGAF/RB Forums/C3 these are things that people are asking. Even though he answered some with maybe's it's nice to know someone has at least asked these things.

The reason for possible exclusion of practice mode is literally one of the stupidest excuses I've ever heard.

It's been in every game since Guitar Hero 2 ffs. How the hell would I have ever passed TTFaF without a practice mode?

Will the drums be available to buy separately or just the band in a box? I prefer using the xplorer and already have about 5 microphones.

Hey, I don't know where we are getting the "there will be no digital copy" or "there will be no standalone software" for sale, but that's inaccurate. We'll have more info to share on that soon.

I'll buy this game the day I can use my IONs and not a moment before.

Yeah, this is a huge thing for me. I'm already going to buy an Xbox One for this game since I have spent so much money on DLC, but I'm not also going to spend another $250 or so on a drum set again, if that would even be an option again. I certainly won't go back to the stock RB drums after using IONs. The lack of an online was a bummer, but no ION support is pretty much a deal breaker. There's been no confirmation either way so I'm still hopeful something will be worked out. If not, I still have all my DLC and customs to scratch that RB itch.

I have a few guitars still, but the tilt sensors and upstrum on all but one are iffy. I am tempted to just get the guitar bundle and the legacy adapter later for when I want to bust out my drums. I already have three microphones, so no need for a band bundle.

I see the bundles for pre-order but does anyone know if they include the cymbals with the drums cuz if not then its really pointless for 250 bucks for the complete set

Echoing the other real-drum-set users, I'm not buying a new fake drum set when I have my real drum set and midi adapter right here, still usable in RB3. I've got well over 800 songs on RB1-3, it's not worth it for me to upgrade if I can't use my drums. The loss of keyboard was disappointing. The loss of ion/midi support is a dealbreaker for me.

I'm in this boat. 800 songs on 360 and my Ion Drumset. No way I could go back. I am hopeful for it to plug and play on Xbox One or at the very least allow me to buy a new Xbox One brain for it.

For whatever reason, Amazon.ca and Bestbuy.ca aren't putting up the standalone version for sale.

bestbuy.ca does have the ps4 standalone version up at least. Can't seem to find the xbox one version.

Oh yeah, I asked specifically about the Xbox standalone over twitter (because I wanted to order it for the discount) and they said they were "working on it".

My assumption is that there is no standalone Xbox SKU because you need to have the adapter to use old instruments? But that's just an educated guess.

Please don't cut practice mode. That's ridiculous.
They surely won't. Cutting out online play is one thing but removing practice mode will pretty much remove the competitive edge completely. Even the PS2 version of Rock Band had practice mode. It was severely cut down, sure, but it still existed.

Although removing it would pretty much guarantee that we don't get a repeat of the XMB glitch from the PS3 version of RB3. So there is that.

Man I miss playing Rock Band, but I was on Xbox last gen and I'm on PS4 this gen.

250.00 is steep for the bundle (well, it's 200 after the Best Buy discount) but I feel like I'd be better off tracking down used ps3 instruments for a cheaper "buy in."

But I'm just...eh. I wish the guitar worked across both this and the new guitar hero and then I'd just play both of those games, no band. The days of getting friends together for Rock Band are long gone.

Got a question which I'm hoping one of you will know the answer to:

I have the limited edition bundle of The Beatles Rock Band on 360 but since I only have 2 games left for that system I'm looking to get rid of it and then rebuy a copy of TBRB for my PS3 instead. I'd also like to get Rock Band 4 (PS4) later this year too, I'm just not sure what to do about instruments.

I understand that we should be able to use the old instruments in RB4, so if I managed to find a PS3 bundle of The Beatles RB to replace my 360 one I should be able to use those instruments with Rock Band 4 on PS4 too, Yes?
What about the other way around with the new RB4 instruments? If I got a RB4 bundle instead could I use those with TBRB?

TLDR - If I want to play The Beatles Rock Band (PS3) and Rock Band 4 (PS4) with 1 set of instruments, which do I buy? :)

Someone asked this exact thing while I was at the Rockband 4 booth on Tuesday, and the Madcatz guy said old instruments will work on both old and new systems, while the new instruments will only work on the new systems. And PS3 instruments will only work on PS4, and Xbox 360 instruments will only work on Xbox One, no crossing platforms.

Wait, there's no online play?
