New PS4 model (CUH-1200) announced

Matte bay cover is compatible with the CUH-1100, looks like I'll be making the switch.

Really interested in seeing if there is large difference in noise and heat.

Man I really hope this comes to NA in a standalone deal, or maybe bundled (in volume) with a game or two like they've done with the TLOU bundle. Really want one of these. The Destiny bundle doesn't seem to be so cheaply available anymore when new, and I'd prefer buying new for warranty etc.

Pointless, I'll buy a second PS4 when the real hardware revision comes.
It's not pointless for Sony lol

The manufacturers regularly revise the hardware, we just didn't typically hear about it unless there were obvious physical differences. In this era though, people constantly look to the FCC, etc for fillings. Also the second an actual number changes on the back of console, the world hears about it.

Power consumption improvements + weight are probably from this -
This may be related to the new power supply that Taiwanese electronics company was getting order from "Japanese game console vendor" (sorry I forgot the link).

Less power consumption may be due to new GDDR5 chip and weight reduction should come from new power supply.

Edit: Found the link (you must be the member to see it). Shipment already started at May and 1M units/month.

Just submitted Amazon trade-in for my launch PS4. Will join the all-matte master race as soon as a US model is available.

Current console sounds like it's about to blow up at any second anyway, and warranty is expired. Playing it safe.

Be interested more if the fan noise had changed when at full speed - playing the witcher 3 in places is a real pain with the fan blowing away in the background

Changes to actual performance don't happen mid-gen. Also, 4k in which capacity?
That's not true. Changes in performance for current gen games don't change, but everything else is wide open. We've seen I/O change forever, and since last gen, stuff like HDD size, etc (remember when MS actually gimped the OS to not recognize the extra space for newer HDD's in the original XBox? lol. Those days are over).

Last gen we saw the PS3 remove PS2 hardware, remove SACD playback etc. While that makes it seem like we'd only lose things, I don't think that's the case. It's more about costs. For example, even if the PS3 HDMI wasn't programmable enough to support 3D BluRay, it would have hit in med-gen consoles (though likely not for games). Why? Sony had a hardon for 3D, and literally it would have came free since that's what HDMI Tx parts would be available. It would actually cost more to purposely not have it at a certain point. Updating the playback software is trivial.

In the case of 4K, at some point HDMI 2.0 / HDCP 2.2 Tx parts will simply be the norm. Granted this may be a bit of a longer transition, but there will come a point where it's the same price. So there will be no reason to not support UHD BD.

That all said, I doubt we are at that point so I wouldn't expect it in this revision. However I do fully expect we will get it at some point this gen.

Parts are already cheap.

Waiting for a teardown to see if Sony changed out the blower fan.
But this makes it cheaper. Otherwise there would be no reason for the revision unless there's some major issue with the original we aren't aware of. Of course shipping weight is also a factor.

Good idea. My launch ps4 broke some time ago after making loud noises.

My guess is a more efficient circuit design along with thinner plastics.

I would never put a blower fan in a PC. In fact, if I saw a graphics card that has a blower fan, I'd suggest the user to buy a different brand or if the user doesn't care about warranty, then put an aftermarket fan.

Definitely the bottom of the barrel in terms of cooling.

The 10% lighter figure would make it cheaper shipping for Sony already. It will provide a slightly bigger profit margin on the consoles and considering the amount they'll ship it's worth the minor redesign. This isn't an actual redesign they'll advertise like they would a PS4 Slim or a 1TB PS4.

I am still waiting to get a PS4. Do you suppose the new model will come out in a bundle? How would I know I am getting the new model? Will the SKU indicate something I ought to look for?

Hoping I can by a matte white HDD cover quickly. My glossy one has a stupid scratch on it and it drives me nuts.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

It should be apparent on the box since the HDD cover will be matte finish now. If not, you can check on the back of the box.

The long LED light strip on the console will be shorter.

oh ok..

They both look kinda similar length to me..

I'm sure all models will be slowly replaced to new one. I think average consumer won't even care about it.
I also think less power dissipation means smaller heatsink, which directly gets reflected to overall weight.

The bump in power efficiency means at least some redesign occurred. Minor or not.

When I saw the thread title I was worried that I might want to cancel my Batman LE PS4 preorder coming in this week. But I really have no interest in this redesign. Now if it had 1tb and was 4k ready, I'd bite.

Really disappointing that Sony didn't improve the HDD size.

But I actually like that they did away with the glossy finish. Matte is cheaper, but I'll take cheap instead of scratches everywhere.

What is funny, is that Microsoft did exactly the same with their recently announced 1TB XBO.

Any word on a tweaked Dualshock 4 with sticks that don't peel and triggers that don't stick?

Dude I have already replaced my thumbsticks with Xbox One because I like the height of them. I'm trying to replace my 3d analog sensor but I can't seem to completely remove the old solder from the grounding points on the PCB.

Off topic: Does anyone know what type of solder they used on the PCB?
Aside from lead-free solder, what else is there?
there solder with lead like 60/40, 90/10, and 80/20.

How are you desoldering it?

With a 60W desoldering iron. I even added some flux to help it flow better but still nada. I mean the solder is melting but there small remnants that are preventing me from removing the sensor.

No more electrostatic buttons? Man Sony should have done that from the first model.
Anyway it's good they at least acknowledge that at certain circumstance they do cause trouble..

There should be more tampons in gaming
Awww damn, that matte finish is so good. I hate the shiny part on the PS4. It shows dust, fingerprints and scratches so readily but I'm glad that Sony is pushing out more colors. Hopefully in the future Sony will have an even larger variety of colors.
