SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

No reason they couldn't. But the goofballs running the campaign don't inspire much confidence where communication is concerned.

It would help a ton if they did.

And I can't stress enough that Yu Suzuki needs to know that we don't mind waiting until we get to 10 million dollars before he starts making the game. This needs to be made clear!

Would they still show how much money is being raised and the stretch goals being crossed off if it switches over to PayPal?

That's exactly what I've been saying. Everybody says opening a PayPal will solve their problems. HOW?!?! They have a Kickstarter, there's no better way to throw money at this project or increase your pledge. There's no accountability with PayPal, they have no obligation to even disclose how much they get in donations or even abide by the same funding plan laid out in the Kickstarter.

I see that some of you feel that this will allow you to pledge more over time and get it to $10 million, but the features you want from that goal, like the whole "open world" idea, are not easy to implement in the middle of development and they sure aren't going to wait and see if PayPal donations reach $10 mil. before they starting development.

Edit:

I guess I've been proven wrong

Great. Let's let another entry into the Shenmue series sit in development hell AGAIN.

The project will be in the early pre-production stage for at least a few months after the Kickstarter is complete. There will definitely be time to feed more money into it.

HOWEVER, I think it is misguided for people to be so focused on the post-Kickstarter phase when the campaign isn't even halfway over yet.

They can ramp up staff if the donations keep coming in, though. Since it's (mostly) planned out, it should be possible to be flexible with the scope of the game. Bear in mind that development will happen over the course of two years.

e.g. "we got an extra million over the past two months... uh, let's add some stuff to those villages"

Basically, a well run paypal would make this thing fly even if
when
it comes in short of $10m. The emphasis there is on "well run", though.

We all know there's absolutely 0% chance this will hit $10m right? Still pumped to see where it goes, but there is no chance it'll hit the 10m.

Let's see how the $30 on the 3rd works out, that'll be a perfect barometer to gauge the interest in something like that. It's a massive undertaking because you would need thirty three thousand people (33,334 to be exact) to donate $30 just to get up to $1 million. I know we've been waiting for Shenmue, but I have a hard time believing thirty three thousand people are that eager. If anyone does that for just one year, you would be paying $360 in PayPal donations alone.

I know some projects are making this crowdfunding look easy but we are still talking about millions here, that's a lot of money.

One of the key things with Paypal I've seen is that some countries simply can't contribute to Kickstarter. Paypal is a bit wider of a net to cast out with.

Never say never. Kicktraq still has it trending towards 10 mil.

There is a huge appitite for higher tiers, so if they add more of those, and improve low-mid level tiers (physical PS4 delivered by Sony?), add a bunch more information both on what Shenmue is, and what Shenmue III will be, I can see it going well above 7 million.

Perhaps, if they add more platforms, include 2001-2003 Dreamcast/Xbox early Shenmue 3 development footage, have Sega announce separate HD remasters, and go all out with the campaign, they could go a few million higher.

Waiting out is a terrible idea. Instead it is a good idea to start working towards the production right away and use additional funds to balloon the budget as they go along. That's how the majority of AAA projects get made anyway.

Man I'm surprised this kickstarter has stalled so much. Bummer for the people who were wanting this. Seems like they're either not showing up, or this is more niche than people thought.

Really weird. Not chilling in myself as I'm not a fan. But I expected much more. At least sega / shenmue fans can finally chill, but I wish this had gone better

Uh, it's on track to beat out Bloodstained and end up the most successful gaming Kickstarter of all time.

Not good enough for you?

It's on track to be the most successful game Kickstarter in history and to be in the top ten Kickstarter projects period. It is very successful, on the backs of the fans will alone.

We like to rant about it not being as good as we wanted it to be and we want the maximum amount of money possible, perhaps because we are fans but by any realistic metric the results are good.
the drop was still too aggressive.

Guys, please keep pushing $30 on the 3rd!

I'm all for this. I just thought that if they started to make the game straight away that the additional funds might not make much of a difference since it would be too late to change the game.

Progress of all kickstarters so far has been shaped as a u graph.
Very high pledges at the start and end, and low pledges throughout the rest of the campaign. Shenmue III is still on track to become the most successful gaming KS (not counting Ouya).

Also, you need to remember that Kickstarter does not reach the entire audience. A lot of people just do not do crowdsourcing, or cannot due to credit card restrictions.

Also the longer the delay it the more it costs. Renting buildings and keeping staff isn't free! We are already getting Shenmue 3 which is just awesome. Lets just all help advertise the Kickstarter and hope it can reach its full potential rather than focusing on numbers and strategies.

A lot can change over the development period as well so maybe they can source some other funding later down the line if stretch goals aren't met or add some features as DLC if it sells well enough!

Yeah, I think we felt since day 1 the team behind the KS is pretty much ehhhhhhhhhhhhh

Can anyone create a comparison picture between the old and improved Ryo face? Side by side it looks pretty much better.

The stream certainly had issues, few minutes of echo, flickering, reading questions from Twitch chat (of all places?) and crazy red shirted guy.

After the successful Bloodstained campaign, I wish DDM and Fangamer were handling the PR and the kickstarter project instead of Awesome Japan.

I kind of appreciate that they moved the stretch goals to top of the page (as it was painful to scroll down). Indifferent about the new stretch goals, but I'm interested to see how high it reaches.

Was really happy to see the new tiers and glad they gave the campaign a boost. Now they just need to add some that don't have a limit. Yesterday was a good day for that alone so I'm hoping they can keep it up.

I had to tell Cedric to tell them directly on Twitter to do that one when he said he was meeting with Yu to discuss the state of the KS page.

There will always be some people who can't use Kickstarter's payment system and want to use paypal, but honestly in every other kickstarter like this the Paypal money doesn't amount to that much. It would probably bring in an extra $100-200k during the campaign at the most.

You can't really trust Kicktraq for a kickstarter like this, it just averages out the amount of money made per day so far and puts what the total would be if the average continues to be the same for the entire period of the kickstarter. Obviously the first few days of this kickstarter were so high that it's causing the average per day to be much, much higher then it should actually be for the calculation. I would guess the $5-6 million range is much more likely.

Well then, make sure to let him know that Awesome Japan are doing a terrible job so far, and that they're hurting the campaign more than helping it... :(

Old kickstarter-page model looks better than the newly revised one to me. His eyes, jawline, and gaunt looks really strange in the new.

I wonder if they still have the old clay sculptures they can just re-scan into models...

He still looks too white, i'm really not happy with the way he's currently looking.

Yeah, the character modelers are doing an awful job. Even Sega Racing All Stars has a better Ryo, and they actually remodeled him too. Also, why is his hair brown in Shenmue 3...

I tweeted Yu about the clay models with the pic. He probably won't reply but hope he sees it at least.

I'm just watching the stream (3am local time is too late, even for shenmue^^). Our money is all gone, isn't it? Spent on drugs by AWESOME Japan :( The fuck is going on with the communications guy? Embarassing...

Nah. I think he looks closer to his original look in the new version. But... one thing bothers me: He's supposed to have black hair. :(

His leather jacket doesn't look like leather, he looks way too 'American/White' if that makes sense and what happened to his black hair

Why not just take the old model and try to start from there

The jacket looks like it's made out of crumpled paper.

But I'm sure the modelling will restart in earnest once they actually start production, so people probably shouldn't treat this target model as if it was the finished one.

If that model exist, production has already started. ^_-

Yeah, not holding my breath that they start over with it. Sure, Suzuki said he isn't happy about the new version as well and they will continue to change it, but if they are even unable to nail the basics in the first few versions...

It's a racing game so you never really see him in detail, it's so low poly that the comparison doesn't really make much sense.

Meaningless semantics, but target renders and concept models are also being built during pre-production. :D I don't think full production has started yet (but I haven't actually watched the Q&A so maybe they said something about that).
