Fox Interactive splash screen is gone
There's a crazy low res prerendered title scene movie I've never seen before

Different Logo

Odd targets (a tutorial level That wasn't in the NA release), "1up" above player score, "High Score" label and value are titled Horizontally

Yikes, looks like it renders at 320x240 regardless of what resolution you choose. I'll give this a pass.

So I know BIOS are needed for PS1 & PS2 emulation, but what are they exactly? I remember having to look for them on the internet because the emulators didn't come packed with BIOS, but I never assumed it was a licensing thing.

Do they contain system architecture information, or is it just licensing agreement stuff?

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is the most basic piece of firmware a computer has. It controls the booting sequence, and so it loads even before the operating system. It controls everything that the computer (or console, in this case) needs to start, and it makes sure that the computer passes the Power-On Self-Test (POST). Most modern PCs come with its successor nowadays, UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface).

No big difference if this is ps1 emulation it's using the ps1 bios which is Sony property. The retron emulates bios free systems.

There are legal, homebrew alternatives to the official PSX BIOS, namely the HLE BIOS. It's completely legal and fair to use it instead of dumping Sony's BIOS, so there's actually no issue there.

So it functions the same way as the windows BIOS that is used for overclocking stuff! I never knew that stuff was licensed.

Didn't this game use licensed music from The Crystal Method?

Surprised that wasn't an obstacle, as it seems so hard for Sony to get old games up on PSN because of it (supposedly, anyway).

Uh, well. "BIOS" is the name of this type of software. There are several different brands that produce similarly-functioning BIOSes on PC: Phoenix, Award, American Megatrends... Since console developers are known to "code to the metal", they produce their own BIOSes tailored to their specific hardware platform.

UEFI rocks, though. You can use your frigging MOUSE! It was mindblowing a few years ago when I got a brand new motherboard that came with UEFI. It was a game-changer :p

I'll be all over Hogs of War day one, if they release that.

Such a pity the port on GOG is terrible. The enemy units don't even move, for christ's sake.

Although it can't be long till Atari get that taken down for mentioning Tempest in the description. Unless it has their blessing/involvement.

They have many games from Infogrames (which is now basically Atari) coming up. Seems like they're involved.

How do straight up emulated console games work on Steam? I assume the game contains PS1 oriented button mapping and controller icons, which strikes me as confusing for PC gamers.

It probably is for people that still look at the controller while playing, or those that haven't put in tons of hours on these titles already.

It's not a whole lot different than the old way of referring to gamepad buttons as a number, which was still common in the 90's and 00's

Seems like the article about this release was posted here.

The legality issue comes from the fact they're using a GPL licensed emulator for this, but haven't open sourced the changes they made to it, which is against GPL rules or something. So provided they do that it should be fine.

I'm actually super curious how did they get achievements in this game. Any ideas?

Not even a little bit hard. Most emulators have debuggers that can check and live-update the system RAM while a game is running. You simply poll for a certain bit in the memory to be set to a certain value. It's not hard to reverse engineer the game's memory layout either. This is a trivial task that any decent programmer could implement on any emulator.

I wonder more about some of the games they are advertising with Infogrames as the publisher. In the case of Koudelka they may be able to get the rights to publish it from them but they only had the PAL rights. So are some of these games going to be region locked? This one seems to be a test since the original developer owns the rights to it so they can authorize new releases. Also does the open source emulator they are using use an emulated bios or just a normal bios.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I vaguely remember n2o from back in the day for having a Crystal Method soundtrack... loved that 90's era breakbeat stuff. How is the actual game? Worth buying?

It uses emulated BIOS, so there shouldn't be anything illegal in there.

It's $3 and could be pulled from Steam potentially, so get it sooner rather than later.

Yeah well it's easily rectified by them.
At least I think the only issue here is the GPL violation? Of course we have others that have broken this and gotten away without even a Jimmie rustled. Actually many are doing so today and no one can touch them :( They have even openly refused to comply with the GPL. Take a second to look at the Android world and come into this corner and cry with me :(

It seems like it would be a better option to buy the PSX version used and emulate it with ePSXe, to be honest. The Steam version uses a PAL copy of the game so it's only 50hz, and doesn't support high resolution rendering.

D has the best 'bad' ending in a video game I've ever played. I own the discs still but if this manages to stay up I would probably grab it just to have it.

Toshinden 2? My god, I've been waiting for all the Toshinden games to come to PSN, they never have though :(

KKND Crossfire & Hogs of War are things I both own and would probably buy again too.

What an interesting initiative.

Not a pc gamer, but this is great news especially if it puts the idea in Sony's head that maybe these old games still have an audience. And helps spur more releases.

Is the the PS1 version of Hogs or the PC? Because the PC version sucks, right? The thread makes it sound like it's emulated PS1, but just want to make sure.

Edit: Oh, it's not out yet. I see.

So, they are good then? Great! Roll on the classics!

Edit: They made an official post on the N20 Steam Boards. Basically, it was a simple oversight. (http://steamcommunity.com/app/364840/discussions/0/523890528711365888)
Really glad to hear it.

On another note, with the GPL PSX emulator they're using, will it only emulate at original resolution or could it potentially upscale as well? Failing that, I'd hope to all hell that we get some solid CRT filters so it doesn't look like complete arse.
