Minecraft Windows 10 version

Yeah! Good thing they're not getting rid of the Java version.

Nope they will just neglect it till they can get to a point where they can get rid of it and then the PC version will be little more than late ports of the Xbone version with all the limitations that version has.

Modding, dedicated servers and more are most likely coming in the future.

Keep dreaming, this is a PORT of the Xbone version, the Xbone version will never get dedicated servers and will never get mod support so you can bet your life the "new" PC version will never get them either.

What exactly are you basing all these statements of fact on?

Last I checked Microsoft owns one of the largest server infrastructures in the world.

In the long run the Windows 10 version is most likely going to replace the java version; I very much doubt that will happen until they get dedicated servers and modding properly running.

Well there's the problem - the very idea that MS is attempting to "replace" the original version (even if its a long term plan) is gonna annoy a looot of people

He is talking about players OWN personal servers. Hell my 12yo son has one he runs. I am sure MS will be happy to host a vanilla no mod version on their servers though for a small fee. :(

Windows 10 Edition will not replace the existing PC version. Instead, it will be treated as an entirely separate platform to “take advantage of the advanced technology and gaming platform provided by Windows 10.”
Heh, that's pretty brazen.

I wonder how many cycles of this type of PR bullshit an average person can go through before getting clued in.

It is as clear as day what is happening. The current PC version of minecraft has seen an unprecedented fall in development. It hasn't gone unnoticed in the Minecraft community that updates for the current version have dropped off sharply since Microsoft took over. In other words they are already starting to neglect the Java version.

As for what I am basing this being a port of the Xbone version. Well I personally cannot see them starting Minecraft 10 from scratch (especially since it is launching in beta in July). So this sounds to me as if it is a port of the Xbone version (which would be an incredibly easy and quick process). The Xbone version doesn't have mod support nor does it have dedicated servers and it never will have those things which means the new Windows 10 version won't ever get them either.

Then if you take into account that this new version will have to work on some pretty crappy devices such as Win10 tablets that have barely 1gb of RAM then the game will have to be limited in many ways compared to the current Java version (as the console versions are limited compared to the PC version).

So basically they are porting the Xbone version to the PC and shoving GFWL 2.0 into it. That appears to be the future of Minecraft on the PC.

There will be no dedicated servers, no ability to mod, no way for you to play with the millions of PC gamers that already have minecraft either and the PC version will have all the limitations that the console versions have so you can forgot those HUGE sprawling worlds you can have in the PC version. You will also get the privilege of having to pay for skins and texture packs too.

I wondered how Microsoft was gonna fuck Minecraft up on the PC, now I know.

Did you miss the part where this isn't replacing the existing version?

No I didn't miss it, I just don't believe them when they say it because they are already cutting back on development of the Java version of Minecraft. It wasn't till today that we now discover WHY they are cutting back development of the JAVA version of Minecraft.

Sure, how can you take away what people already have? I am sure they will stop active development of the old Java version though. What happens when a java update breaks something? Will MS fix the old PC version or wash their hands of it? What happens to the old Mojang login server?

Anyway we should definitely reserve judgement until we know exactly what the Win10 version will have. Keep in mind that Microsoft wants to push 10 hard so releasing a worse version of the game on PC isn't in their best interest

Cross play sounds great. My daughters have been building a Skyrim village on the XB1 version. Be cool to join them from my laptop.

Talk about overreacting.

Is it ditching Java so we get a performance boost? Would work nicely on cheap tablets if they reworked it.

And mod support?

Does this work with the phone / tablet edition of Windows 10? Only reason why doing this would make some sense

Just announced at minecon.

Windows 10 Edition will not replace the existing PC version. Instead, it will be treated as an entirely separate platform to “take advantage of the advanced technology and gaming platform provided by Windows 10.”

Beta available from July 29th on PC first.

Existing PC players will receive the Windows 10 version for free. New players can buy the game for $10 USD for a limited time.
Presumably means xbox live & achievements, hopefully cross play with xbox too.

Also GG Microsoft giving it free to existing players.

If it means it can be played against Xbox one users, and works on lower spec Devi es (eg my kids crappy schoolwork laptop) then we would probably switch. I'd miss mods and dedicated servers, but it would mean we could play together more easily as a family - my PC, kids laptop and Xbox one.

Microsoft didn't pay 2.5bn for nothing.
Can you imagine if all the primary school children spent all day playing Minecraft on non-windows PC.
It could mean a whole generation of potential windows buying customer lost forever.
The 2.5 bn business plan is to prevent it from happening, Convert Minecraft to windows only locking down these users in the next future version.
To those who really care about Minecraft's modding and dedicated server, you guys can start thinking about building your own fock/clone.

Were we expecting the Java version to get launch levels of support perpetually?

And why do we ignore the fact that some gamers like a streamlined , console-like experience, as opposed to the complex freedom that the typical PC version offers. THAT'S the reason console gaming is so huge. The fact that both options will be available is a good thing.

Not to mention, there are a bunch of assumptions going on here...

Phones yes although it's still windows 10 core. Not aware of a small screen version of 10 for tablets?

it's the same edition as phone

Windows 10 Mobile is an edition of the Windows 10 operating system developed by Microsoft. This edition of Windows 10 is a mobile operating system that succeeds Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows RT. It is designed for smartphones and small tablets under 8 inches in screen size, running on ARM as well as IA-32 processor architectures.

I was wondering how long this would take...not even a page

What is really interesting here is cross play with pocket edition...so some friends could come over with phones and you could all play...for those kids really into minecraft this seems pretty awesome

Can we honestly stop calling it GFWL?

It's nothing like GFWL and calling it that only gives it a negative cannotation.

Is there any reason to? We don't have any real details and Microsoft's past attempts at something like this have been pretty terrifying (coming back to GFWL).

Minecraft without modding?
I'm guessing this will not be moddable.
Yeah... the reaction to this is not going to be positive. It's exactly what people were worried would happen. Create a fresh .exe to "start over". I know we don't have all the details yet but I get the feeling this is specifically made with mod prevention in mind so that Minecraft can work the same across all Win10 devices.

I'm surprised people expected anything else when Microsoft bought Mojang. The mod prevention is not for making it work the same across all devices, it's for retaining control over the content.

Is the Xbone version and the Win10 version going to be crossbuy? If not, they will likely not be the same code base at some point. Otherwise, why the fuck would they not make it crossbuy.

Both versions will continue to co-exist. 4J Studios is probably handling this version with Mojang focusing on the current PC ver.

Oh dear god.

I think there's was some willful ignorance that PC would still be allowed to develop itself on a laissez faire basis. r/minecraft seems completely oblivious as to what's going on. Instead they're taking about how awesome it will be to see their mods on Windows Phone, which, just, no. That would be quite the coup of course, but cross-platform mod support is almost in "pigs fly" territory.
