Minecraft Windows 10 version

Both versions will continue to co-exist. 4J Studios is probably handling this version with Mojang focusing on the current PC ver.

If someone doesn't like the Win10 Version they can continue to use and mod the Java version. I don't see the issue.

So basically they are porting the Xbone version to the PC and shoving GFWL 2.0 into it. That appears to be the future of Minecraft on the PC.

There will be no dedicated servers, no ability to mod, no way for you to play with the millions of PC gamers that already have minecraft either and the PC version will have all the limitations that the console versions have so you can forgot those HUGE sprawling worlds you can have in the PC version. You will also get the privilege of having to pay for skins and texture packs too.

I wondered how Microsoft was gonna fuck Minecraft up on the PC, now I know.
I've heard some whoppers in my day, but wow.

Well, the doom mongerers will have you believe that it's just a trojan horse and they will stop supporting the old version slowly but surely. Cuz ya know, Microsoft obviously have no idea that people enjoy mods and everything with Minecraft.

People were also convinced that Microsoft would stop supporting the Playstation releases of Minecraft after buying Mojang and that hasn't panned out. In fact, they're even getting a PS-exclusive Little Big Planet mashup DLC.

Anyways, there's various ways they could handle this and many of them do not have to mean disaster like some people are predicting. They do need to be careful, though.

That is going to happen eventually. No game is supported forever. People will still be able to play and mod the old version.

I can't imagine what "advanced technology" minecraft could possibly require windows 10 for. It would be cool if had the shader mods implemented, some nice volumetric clouds would be nice as default.

World of Warcraft has been supported for over 10 years. Obviously *one day*, support will stop, but that doesn't have to be anytime soon.

Completely pointless and redundant. The whole reason the PC version is the best is the the massive library of mods. Can't see how this wont be a big downgrade unless they have exclusive game play features for it.

You know most of the mods on PC have to be updated every time they release a new Java version of this game. PC players were told that one day they would have native mod support which has never happened. The hope was that Microsoft would release a non Java based version of the game that supported mods natively and would not break on every update.

This is fantastic for me, I own the current PC and Xbone versions. My daughter can't quite navigate M+KB but does ok with a controller. This way we can both get a full screen.

Pretty much what I expected from Microsoft. The old version of Minecraft is going to be poorly supported if at all (even though it would be simple enough to keep it supported or updated), while the forcefully push people to the new version of Minecraft that is likely kept up to date to push Windows.

Have they said if this version can cross-play with XB1?

My assumption would be that, because of the business model being presented, trying to run the current game in Win10 is going to be made to be incredibly painful and probably never even be available officially. Even if this happens the way around it would be just not upgrading to Win10 ever ever but that's depressing to think about being the only means to ever playing a modded Minecraft again. Disclaimer: I know that this new model has its benefits and is something that a lot of players will enjoy. But GAF probably doesn't have a dominant population geared toward that.

I'm clearly being a big of a doom monger, but I still think they'll support the existing Windows version (and non-Windows) for awhile because of the raw number of people that will still have Windows 7 or 8 for the foreseeable future. They're continuing with Sony I assume because, although it's a Microsoft first-party IP now, its primary focus is the larger gaming ecosystem. The PS4 is not a threat to their wider Minecraft plans so, hey, extra money. This of it as a relationship between Sony and Microsoft Studios, not between Sony and specifically "Xbox", which is the thing where the direct competition is.

Key phrase being "for awhile". Hopefully. There's minimal incentive to continue support of the existing PC version after the Win10 free upgrade window.

So this is what I can see happening.

The win10 version will be able to crossplay with the Xbox One version. It allows them to keep selling the PS version, but gives the Xbox One an advantage.

At some point the Win 10 version will allow mods to be made for it. The Xbox One version will also see limited mod support as well (kind of like Fallout).

The PC version will keep on doing its own thing.

I see the Win10, XBox versions and Playstation versions keeping in step with each other feature wise (other than cross play and mod support). The existing PC version will be ahead.

I wonder if MS will ever release MC for a Nintendo system (either current or new)?

Native controller support is nice. Wonder if this is basically the Xbone Edition? Would be nice if it had local MP if so.

Windows 10 is not locked down at all. It is just like Windows 7. The current PC version of Minecraft works fine.

Yep, this is what they SHOULD do. But this being as big of an announcement as it is, and the release so close, you would have thought MS would have given more information. Then there wouldn't be all this Doom Mongering, unless of course they (we) are right.

What? It's just a Java program. Why would it be "incredibly painful" to run on Win10?

Okay, so at least a little silver lining here. Still awaiting an explanation on if or how modding will work in the Win10 edition but with one of the founding concepts of 10 being to unify all devices I can't see mods being at all compatible with that.

The difference being wow brings in money monthly from paying subs to keep the game supported for those 10 years plus having paid expansions and not having a WoW windows 10 edition that is treated as it's own thing to compete with. Or dont you see that difference?

I wonder if they will scrap the current xbone version and make this universal instead.

This is probably the version that runs on hololens as well.

It's much closer to 8.1 than windows 7. Both are just as "locked" though.
Not at all. It's as open as windows 7, and this time even modern apps can be installed from outside of the store with no hassle (it's literally a radio button away)

The desktop in 8.1 is just as open as in windows 7. 8.1 did not limit installing regular desktop software. On the other hand, you could not install the new store apps to 7 at all.

The universal android style store sideloading thing is new compared to more limited one in 8.1 but in this regard 10 is still much closer to it than 7.

This sure sounds like direct port of the console version of Minecraft to PC.

If you're the kind of player that likes mods or you've ever hosted your own MC server this is not the version you want.

I'm not going to overreact but It feels like the beginning of the end.

So long as they continue to rake in mountains of money with the Minecraft IP, I don't really see the difference, no.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

Why would you expect to be able to do this? That's like complaining that you can't run Mac software on a PC. It has nothing to do with the system being locked down.

So it is confirmed that the windows 10 version is just pocket edition with more features being added to it (they will roll over to regular pocket edition too). So all of you worrying the sky is falling chill. This is not a replacement and is probably just work from the windows phone version of the game which will now work on all windows 10 products. Here is the confirmation

That makes sense. Bit disappointing in a way, but should also alleviate the doom mongering.

Finally, they've gotten rid of that crappy, unoptimized java code and moved to some nice, clear, easy to -

....Wait, where did my custom skins go?

And my mods?

$10? Might be time for me to buy Minecraft.

Not really sure why. They aren't making it "cross-buy" with the previous versions. I guess to lock people into Windows 10 (makes sense) but I'm wondering if that's going to "split the playerbase" if Windows 10's version can only talk to Windows 10 instead of Windows 8/below.

I've asked this before but I forget, what about Java makes it bad for Minecraft and games in general?

To make it reaaaaaaally simple think of the java virtual machine as an emulator and a java game as a rom, a java game is not written for the hardware is running on but the jvm translates the code for the hardware, so it's really slow.

Yesh.

And they've been using Java the whole time? Damn.

The current mobile version does not have graphics options to really crank out the view distance and edit the res. Unless they add them DX12 is kinda pointless.
Having cross play between PC and mobile doesn't mean the PC side cant have graphics options.
