Clannad was so much worse than this though design wise. This one already resembles other shows out there. The Clannad cast's eyes were the size of ostrich eggs.

God, Clannad is awful. I never touched it in any form because of the disgusting character design. People go on and on about how sad it is, but I just can't. It's so bad.

You know, I did say it's from Air, although admittedly I haven't seen it and a quick scan on MAL doesn't come up with any character that looks like the one on the left. I can't think of anything else I haven't seen that has the eyes though, so I think it's fair to assume that yes, Air does look like that.

e: some more searching among the kyoani animated KEY shows still doesn't come up with a character that looks like the one on the left. She must be a relatively minor character in Air, then.

Let me give you a very crash course of the situation in Gundam UC timeline before 0080.

The Earth Federation is basically a global government that is basically the main government for Earth and the space colony. Think of them as NATO. The Zeon is basically the rebel or opposition government who oppose the main government as they think of them as old rich man who have no idea how the people of space live. Think of them as Germany.

Basically, both side don't like each other and a war spill out because of it. The Zeon military force is like what Nazi Germany military is, not a huge military but what they got is very professional and strong force. The Earth Federation is like USA military in the WWII, not too great but compensate in quantity of military equipment.

The sad side of this war is that the Earth Federation isn't a good guy that you expected and you can say the same as Zeon as they isn't always bad then they want you to believe. This is shown a bit in the original show Mobile Suit of Gundam.

For the show, the Arctic base you see in the 1st episode is actually a Earth Federation military base. What happened is the Zeon special force you're following is suppose to infiltrate the military to located a special mobile suit and destroy it (while at the same time destroy the base). Unfortunately, it didn't go as plan as you see, so the special force you're following, have to go to space to located the mobile suit in one of the colony. During this time, they have to bring in a new officer as they're one man short. This officer is Bernie who isn't an ace pilot and you see got shot down in the 1st episode. This also tell you that the Zeon force is running out of officer that they have to bring in someone as a rookie in a special force which isn't a good sign and also foreshadowing something later.

I do hope this help you give a rough idea of what is happening. Hope you like this show as it might be one of the better Gundam show in Gundam saga which is funny when you think about it.

No problem. If you do need help to understand the show you're watching, do post it on your impression and if I see it, I will post what is happening so you have a good understanding of the show. Coming from Gundam Wing to Gundam 0080 isn't wise as you never saw the UC show but will give you a credit, you choose wise of one of the better show in the Gundam saga if you're into the story and character development than action scene. If you want pure action scene, would look into G-Gundam.

Clannad was really good, but the constant sad themes in Kanon that kept popping up are on an entirely different level than Clannad, ~After Story~ included. They both wrap up really well, but with Kanon, it's constantly pulling the heart strings, so it leaves quite the emotional impact.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out. I just assumed it was from Air given that the character was next to Makoto from Kanon, and Air is the only one of the Kyoani Key trio that I haven't seen - I thought they must have been related given the context of the image. Sorry for jumping to conclusions!
