Digital Foundry: Uncharted 4 pushes PS4 tech to the next level (E3 demo analysis)

Glad to see Naughty Dog focused on maximizing the leeway they got from 30fps, this game should be a treat

Gonna be shooting all of the rice bags. I wonder how in depth that system is. I think it was crysis that had that dynamic fluid thing where you could shoot barrels and they would leak.

Lol you really believe that?

The lead Architect of PS4 said the console was designed to be futureproof

Sony is constantly working on bringing new updates/features that utilize PS4

And of course, you have the game developers themselves who are always finding new ways to to use the hardware. Ray tracing wasn't talked about at the PS4's reveal yet a game did later show up on the console that now uses it.

But this consoles are not some kind of special made hardware. They are basicly lowend PCs...

So buy a lowend PC instead.
This argument has to end. First it was Killzone:SF (a launch game) then InFamous then TO:1886 and now Uncharted 4. Every new release is looking better than the last while looking better than every other game out there.

But they are just already topped lowend PCs.

Compare a low end PC game from 2015 and then 2005 and tell me which one looks better?

Notice how the hardware did not change despite one game looking better? It's not always about power or special hardware.

Great post

I am still amazed by screenshots of The Order and Driveclub even though I have played them, Uncharted 4 looks like it will be the same. Looking forward to see how far developers can push the PS4.

Great read. All in all the demo was incredibly impressive, and I'm sure it'll improve before release. Looks gorgeous.

PlayStation 4 was designed with 1. Accessibility and 2. Potential. Smaller devs/studios on a strict budget can opt for straight ports and forgo the hassle of utilising the console to it's full potential - but still achieve quite stunning results. Meanwhile, first party and third party juggernauts can attempt to port over some of the more complex PC exclusive features utilizing the PS4's GPGPU architecture and it's future library expansions. It's a pretty genius way of taking Kutaragi's influence and streamlining it.

Even 3rd party studios like Rocksteady have produced high quality stuff, something you would expect from first party devs.

Agreed. This really underpins just how elegant Sony went for their hardware design. With PS4 hitting 1080p/30 FPS with it's absolutely handicapped CPU is quite a testament to the overall design ethos of the machine.

Nice! The advantage of building an engine from the ground up aiming for 60fps, if you can't reach 60 and have to lock it down at 30fps later on it won't budge no matter what stuff you throw at it. Maybe aiming for 120fps is the trick to nail 60fps without the dips?

Naughty Dog always pushes the console to the limits, but imagine what they will be able to do with the PS4 in a few more years!

TLOU2 probably won't need destruction and large set pieces so it can look better than U4, doesn't mean it gonna push the system further. Besides TLOU looked and ran worse than U2/3.

TLOU was also doing more "open world" ideas than both UC2/UC3. There are moments in TLOU that literally felt huge and expansive. It really came together at the end though and the breadth and scale were jaw dropping.

The other thing about TLOU is the art direction in general was supposed to be raggedy, ugly, and destructive. It isn't until the second half that the color palette opens up and it becomes gorgeous.

Not to thread jack or derail.
But Watching NX Gamers tech analysis on Uncharted 4 made me a believer, I was impressed watching it live, impressed watching the stream over again.

But listening to NX Gamer talk about Uncharted 4 makes me lose it.

Uncharted 4 was fucking impressive as shit at E3.
Dont know which game I would place higher, this one or Ghost Recon, but it being Ubisoft I dont know if Ghost Recon will actually be at the level they are claiming.

Witchcraft I tell ye.

With the release date still 8 months away...you got to believe ND will push this game even further...they are not just setting the standard...they are also setting themselves apart from everyone else...

Like they did last gen.

To this day nothing on PS3 looks better than Uncharted 2 or 3. Uncharted 2 was like 2009 or something too, fucking insane.

It's always a treat to know ND are gonna push any PS system to the max.

They, along with Santa Monica and GG get a lot of respect from me with their obsession for pushing tech.

But what ND have achieved with UC4 is crazy. I've never seen a better looking game in motion before.

Doesnt change the fact that this is simply some lowend pc hardware. There is no Cell to master anymore.

Aside from image quality, Uncharted 4 does other things as well, if not better IMO, especially physics.
Of course it does, because it does not look as good as the order.

If UC4 looked like the order, you would lose out on a lot of other things like physics

I think we also can thank TLoU remaster for their early achievement, having a stable level months before release. They've gained so much from porting their engine (and it's probably why they handled it themselves.). It will only go up from here.

It is not 'simply low-end PC hardware'. Yes, it's similar in the sense that's it's x86-64 hardware and doesn't have that much brute force performance compared to many gaming PCs, but the PS4 has stuff like unified GDDR5 memory and GPGPU (GPU compute) functions that PCs cannot take advantage of yet due to all the fragmentation. The PS4 is obviously more similar to PCs than the PS3 was and simpler to develop for, but there are absolutely tricks to master.

I don't know what kind of sorcery they used to make The Last of Us running on PS3 (I've only played the Remastered version but I really doubt it was greatly upgraded outside of the resolution and framerate and some textures here and there), but if they can get something that looks that good on old gen hardware, I can't wait to see what they make with PS4. The first UC4 teaser is insane and I didn't watch any other video to keep the surprise.

that isn't the primary reason games look better over the course of a consoles life though. it's due to optimization and better dev tools. that process that looked ok and took a ton of resources gets optimized to be done using a fraction of the available memory and actually looks better freeing up system resources to be put elsewhere.

as someone has already said. the original xbox and 360 where essentially PC architecture as well. it didn't stop games going from looking like halo CE to halo 2/doom3/riddick etc. or a better example. the difference between splinter cell and chaos theory. or in 360's case. gears 1 to gears 3.

you really would think people would "get" this by now. lol

Uh.. I think you misunderstood my post. I meant that Uncharted 4 does most visual features as good as, if not, better than The Order aside from image quality. Also, a lot of the tech in The Order is baked IIRC. Uncharted 4 seems to be going for more dynamic graphical features.
