Destiny receives a new Leveling System with The Taken King release. Step aside RNG.

This, like a lot of other people, has peaked my interest in the game again. I don't own any of the expansions since launch, what is the most cost effective way to go about getting all the previous expansions and this?

EDIT: oops didn't see that you had the base game. you might want to wait and see if they bundle the year-1 season pass into the TTK expansion at some point

they'll have an all-in-one retail version at TTK launch

If I still own the stand-alone game, would that be the cheapest route?

So what level will existing characters be when in theory they stopped leveling at 20 and the rest was due to gear?

Probably whatever level you're currently at. It would be super weird to log in and end up at a lower level.

If that;s the case, everyone better make sure their gear is fully leveled before installing :p

I'm constantly messing around with gear and go from level 34 to 30

Like the new lvl system but want my dinklebot. Really that hard just to leave the old voice in? I get it not in the new stuff but me and Dinklebot been bros for almost a year now...

This is a really good update but it's a shame that it's coming out after shit tons of time have passed. Good for those who are still in the boat but I have jumped that boat along, long time ago. I'm now interested in other games but if I didn't have anything else I would have definitely jumped back to game.

legit honestly don't understand how someone who can post on GAF needs matchmaking. it takes like no time at all to get a raid group together and there's a mobile version of the site so you don't even need to be at your computer.

Try playing Destiny on the Xbox One here on GAF.

Must be like 10% of the player base on here that plays on it.

If you just own the base? Yes. TTK is $40 if you own the $35 expansion pass.

I've had decent experiences with the LFG that has chat. Very stupid that there aren't ingame tools for this sort of thing though.

I've put probably 10 hours into trying to get into a raid and have never succeeded. I did sword school once, but that was just a tutorial on beating crota. I won't be playing any more destiny until they add matchmaking for raids.

guys, I stopped playing after Down Below, should I just skip HoW and just do TTK?
HoW is actually pretty damn good, worth playing definitely. There is actually a story to it and the new characters are awesome. POE is ok, gets boring after a couple runs. And ToO is a nice change to PVP.

If you buy the TTK Legendary edition you get it with it. Buying it for $20 itself isn't worth it

You can get into raids so easily via destinylfg.com or the GAF OT.

I mean, I understand the complaint, I was one of the complainers back in vanilla, but when I returned I used the GAF OT and the LFG site and now have almost every weapon in the game in the space of a couple of months.

do I have to do raids to get max armor again in HoW?
There is no raid, but you need to run Prison of Elders (the "raid" for HOW. This horde mode replaced the raid) in order to get the max level or get 4 Etheric Light to ascend your armor which is more of a pain in the ass.

At this point if you want to play HOW for fun to play it, go for it. But if you wanna try and hit max level to try and do everything, wait til the TKK so you can hit level 40 without relying on raids to get max armor.

cool, and I take it that this PoE doesn't have matchmaking too?

It does actually. The level 28 version of PoR has matchmaking. The higher leveled versions, 32, 34 and 35 do not.

I don't think you can get entheric light in the 28 Poe can you? I had to suffer through two weeks of iron banner to hit max level since I'm
unable to raid. If taken king adds matchmaking to all activities I'll jump back in. If not I'll pass and play something else.

So as someone who hasn't been able to play much of the prior DLC due to not being tough enough (i.e. I wasn't willing to grind like crazy for gear with Light), does this mean I'll be able to level up just by dicking around again now?

I'd actually be willing to jump in again if so.

Now that I know Luke Smith is a creative director, it helps me understand Destinys problems.

This. The shitshow he starred in earlier this year did nothing to give me any confidence in him. As for the TTK itself, a lot of the new changes sounds good as long as I have enough vault space to put my weapons in. I like collecting a few weapons here and there from each part of the game that came out plus exotics so I'm already close to full. Just sad that my Legendaries that I've rolled to get specific perks is about to get super fucked over by a ridiculous patch that uses a RPG where a scalpel is needed and Common/Uncommon weapons that are supposed to be stronger than my 365 attack weapons. Kinda stupid honestly.

from what I understand here, then yes

As someone who quit at level 30 can I just pick this up and start playing with friends till I reach 40? I don't really care about the prior dlc unless it's necessary to own them. Those old guns will be useless when this comes out according to that other thread so I rather not waste time grinding for them.

The story doesn't interest me I'm only in it for PvP, strikes, and raids.

No you can't, only on 34 & 35.

I highly doubt TTK raid or any raid for that matter will have matchmaking unfortunately.

Yeah pretty much. The way you leveled up to get to 20 is now the standard way to level up to 40. You do not need light to level up to max level. You could theoretically hit level 40 with white armor and weapons lol

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
This might actually get me back into Destiny for a while.
I really want the Taken King, but at 40 bucks its a bit rich for the content its bringing.

I'm repeating like crazy because it helped me: join an active group on the100.io, which is a site built around setting up appointments with people who play the same time as you. On Friday I set up a raid for Monday at noon, and I had 5 other people ready to go right on time. It's helpful and seemingly built for adults who don't have tons of time, as the only time I've been matched with 420-gamertag-laden teen douche-bros has been through other LFG sites. You can even sort groups by average age, which is pretty sweet.

If the PoE 32 is one of the easier ones (I.e. Not the Qudron fight, because fuck that noise), you could do that once per week to get Armor Cores, which can get you to lv 34. And using reddit or an LFG site to arrange PoE32 isn't bad at all. Completely doable without a mic, if that's a deal breaker.

I do hope they finally cave and put matchmaking in, so long as I can sort by mic and casual/serious flags. So far the best, most fun, and most successful LFG experiences have come when I only look for people with a big ol' "CASUAL/RELAXED LOOKING FOR CHILL PEOPLE" disclaimer. The nice part is that anyone who posts K/D requirements or "must know what you're doing/have particular weapon" on group posts usually just out themselves as undesirable anyway.

Thanks for the answers, that sounds like great news. I always really liked the minute-to-minute gameplay in Destiny, so not being able to get in on the new story stuff was a real bummer.

I'm confused by whats going to happen to existing players. Does scrapping the light level mean everyone will start with level 20 characters?

Or will your current level be what you start with?

NumberTwo

Paper or plastic?
This all sounds intriguing but having bought only the base game digitally, I don't see myself shelling out what they're asking for.

This all sounds great though. What it should've been from the jump.

The one with matchmaking where you can't get either armor cores or weapon cores or etheric light. Because of course thats how it would be.

This is 100% false
Is it?

You have to have all of the previous content right? Destiny + TDB + HoW. So that'd be all the DLC, otherwise you'd have to buy the re-release of the main game + DLC included but if you already have the base game whats the point?

dinkbot was just not worth it man, Nolan north probably had some creative freedom in there, I want to re-experince it, got 3 guardians on my ps4 already, guess I'll level one on my x1

That's not the question he asked. He asked if he can keep playing without buying the dlc. The level cap will be raised to 40 for all destiny players, not just ones that bought DLC.

The leveling change and the weapon design changes have made me decide to go ahead and take the plunge on Taken King despite widespread disappointment with a lot of vanilla Destiny and the DLC.

I'm hoping this change means they can get more MMO-esque with the gear and make things like Tier sets that give quality bonuses to specific class builds rather than the current generic bonuses that tend to push people into using one or two specific weapons or one or two specific subclass talents.

Many of these changes are pushing the game more towards the pseudo-MMO side in the way I expected the game to be when it launched. Though I still wish the Titan could be a legitimate tank class with threat and taunts. =/

Meh, it's still not enough to bring me back. It just seems like it's becoming more like a run-of-the-mill mmo.
