Devil's Third - Import Impressions Thread

So what about those golden eggs? I know you get 30 to start with and can purchase more with real money.

Is there any way to earn more or trade another currency for it?

Is it the only way to get customization items like the cat's head?

How much do the Gold eggs cost in Yen?

Based on impression from import user at Ruliweb, Japanese version has dual-voice options. You can select voices between japanese and english.

But text is japanese only though.

Seemed to me like PAL copies only had English.

Wish the Japanese option was available too. It'll be neat.

Also are there any general multiplayer impressions?

I briefly switched to English voices while playing and boy are they boring compared to Japanese voices. Ivan is voiced by Ishizuka Unshou (Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop, Joseph Joestar from Stardust Crusaders, Armstrong from MGR) and he ROCKS, his voice here is quite similar to Ootsuka Akio's Snake and it strengthens the feeling that the game is rather MGS inspired (not in gameplay of course, but in story and some other elements like theme song which is very MGS3 like). English voices in comparison seem very plain.

I really like cod campaign. This one feels like a ripoff.

You start with 30 golden eggs, but you win another every time you level up or stop playing and get to play the next day.

The american voices are awful. The japanese are much better, that's for sure. Since the story is not that good...

The online can be a bit tricky without japanese. You can still play it, but its hard to get a grasp of what is happening with yhe clan stuff. You can also ignore all this and just play the modes. At first, you have no clan or options at all and can only play team deathmatch, deathmatch and another modr with no players ever. The clan stuff appear after you get to level 5.

There is a team called valhalla with the developers. Its easy to play with Itagaki and others on those modes.

Nintendo didn't develop TW101 and people still call it a Nintendo game, yall can't have it both ways.

Devils Third is a Nintendo game :)

W101 is a Nintendo IP developed by Platinum Games.

People don't call Bayonetta 2 a Nintendo game and the same with Devil's Third. Both are games that started development on other platforms and were saved by Nintendo by financing them. Doesn't make them Nintendo games.

I've seen people call it that on this very forum

But I guess it's all just pointless to argue anyway. Nintendo wasted good money on this is the bottom line. Though I'll definitely be checking out the F2P PC version in the same way that I like looking at the aftermath of car accidents.

Yes, yes they do. You may not, but it's disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

OT: interested in seeing more impressions. Bring them on.

I'll repost my impression from a gamefaqs thread.

I just beat the game, it took me around 7 hours to beat it. Last boss fight was extremely cool, very Character Action like, I really enjoyed it. Though the game ended sort of abruptly, it's a pity. In the last fight Ivan sort of "transforms" as a character and I was hoping that there're be some more game where we can play as this new Ivan, but BAM and credits started to roll.

Otherwise, I REALLY liked the game. It's very basic in it's mechanics, really barebone, but thanks to that it has an awesome feel of a really old school action/shooter, you just keep running forward shooting the s*** out of everything and then occasionally you face a really nicely designed boss. There aren't that many bosses (8 if my count is correct), but at least 5 fights are really memorable and challenging and I enjoyed them. It's a really simple game, but it has a really nice feel to it, it you enjoy good action games, chances are you'll like Devil's third.

As far as I can tell, there are no unlockables after beating the game BUT in each of 9 missions you can collect 6 items (crap like bottles of sake or magazines or stickers) and I didn't manage to collect all 6 in any of the mission, so maybe they unlock something, don't know for sure.

Also, after a game you get a really touching message from Itagaki thanking the players, really made me feel for the guy, I sure hope he'll be able to find funding for another game, I'd like to see where he goes after Devil's Third.

7 hours for a first playthrough?

That's pretty darn short.

Nintendo-published titles are usually considered "Nintendo games". That goes even as far as many considering Professor Layton a Nintendo game.

Isn't that pretty much the normal length for a multiplayer-focussed game these days?

Yes, yes they do.

Quote?

This is about semantic now, but this is mixing publishing with IP owning and with developing? Platinum Games and Valhalla are 2nd party developers. W101 is IP owned by Nintendo, the others aren't. In the end people are rather referring to games by their developers, thus W101 being a Platinum Games's game is not incorrect in the context.

Or in case there are people really stating that Bayonetta 2 is a Nintendo game (rather than a Nintendo funded and published game) they are wrong from the semantic perspective. Anyhow it's not a topic worth debating too much.

Longer than Vanquish though. Similar to Shadows of the Damned. Doesn't seem too bad for such an intense action game. Plus I think similarly to Vanquish it has good replay potential, not just because of unlockables, but purely on the strength of the gameplay. That is if you enjoy the game to begin with, of course.

mmm, is Devil's Third a Nintendo IP? Wonderful 101 is an IP owned by Nintendo so i'd call it a Nintendo game. If Devil's Third is too then I suppose it is. Very few people called Bayo 2 "a nintendo game" and that was published and funded by Nintendo.

Edit: Wow I see my exact argument was already posted. Welp.

Hmm so its better than the previews would suggest?

No, opinions are just different among people. Like with every game. This should not be surprising. Normal players don't have to put scores on their opinions or get clicks out of writing hyperbolic teardowns.

well... japanese game for japanese release, why surprised? lol
the only thing that's surprising is that japanese release got dual audio

not really surprising... itagaki's games usually have dual language support in japan. not having the accompanying english menu text selectable is surprising considering itagaki's fb posts.

Melee is only useful to spare bullets most of the time.

Not true in multiplayer..I was watching twitch. I saw people pulling swords and getting sliced the hell up whenever they got too close to another player. There is even a forward slide move with the sword that will slide under someone aiming at your chest/head and slice their belly up.

Y'all need to watch a good player play mp it looks fun! If they arent using the dash button they arent good...no slides or rolls no good..

I think maybe some of those explosive guns need to be nerfed in mp though. Too easy to get kills with those.

Also I hate they copied COD map design instead of something like quake or unreal tournament where both teams have similar bases and you dont have a random ass map with no choke points and PEOPLE SPAWNING BEHIND YOU! What is this crap? Noobs who cant deal with campers designed this crap so they made it so they can spawn behind me... gahh. I never had a problem with campers.. just throw a grenade or something you know where they are!

Or that they don't need to justify "barebones" as somehow positive or old school.

Sadly servers are region locked, this will be pretty bad for a game that probably will not sell a lot. Anyway online is really fun, gunplay is a mess and I'm having really hard time to aim properly (especially because I'm seasoned to Splatoon now, that is perfect in this field for me), but I like how you can navigate the map pretty easly. My favourite mode for now, anyway, is Gladiator, where you can't use fire weapons, so fun.

In multiplayer melee is really useful! I was talking specifically about the solo campaign. Even though sometimes the camera breaks your attack and you end going for nothing.

I think the multiplayer is a little hard. Took me a while to get average and i still make some embarassing games sometimes, but its fun. When theres 16 players, it gets really crazy with everyone stealing your kills.

Kikorin, how do you open the other modes? Still have only the first three open.

In "Drill" I've all the modes unlocked from the start if I've seen right, I've played only deathmatch and gladiators for now.

No English text only voices in the Japanese release and region locked multiplayer? I'm out.

I was intrigued enough to buy if these things weren't true but my Japanese isn't good enough to translate this on the fly.

Bah.

still waiting on my copy, sadly. are there any videos that demonstrate actual skillful play floating around yet?

good to hear about the dual audio, i just have to decide whether i prefer good acting or properly lip-synced acting. :p

edit: shit, mp is region locked? the game will be dead by the time i go back to japan.. i guess i'll just have to wait on the pc version

watching some streams makes it clear that most of the people we've seen so far really have no idea how to actually play. until now i've never seen anyone block or dodge properly, use the ADS autoaim the way you're supposed to, or even the fact that you can fire from the hip without going into first person.

melee combat still looks fairly rudimentary, but the flow between the melee and shooting definitely has some depth to it. i can't wait to play it now.

So the game has been out for a couple of days and Amazon-reviews are actually quite high. http://www.amazon.co.jp/product-reviews/B00Z8NI4DO

A good game torn apart by graphics-enthusiasts? Or buyers trying to justify their purchase?

On top of that the game is sold out and will get a new shipment in two weeks.
This seems likely that it's a situation where the self-selection of purchases and interest in purchase justification are affecting reviewers. It'll be interesting to watch the reviews over the next month or so.

--sold out initial shipment
--good reviews
--people logging crazy hours on streams

This is all just a conspiracy of the Covert Itagaki Reptile Mafia. Hardcore Itagaki fanboys have subverted all of society's mechanisms for honest game review, so don't believe anything you see or read. To fight against it, preemptively strike by calling them out any time this game is brought up, before they show themselves and begin their meddling.
