Indie Games 2015 [August] Now Voting - Post #333!

Trying for the life of me to remember an indie game that was featured on here, 16 bit side scroller style, shooter, dynamic AI, I remember gifs of some tripod looking robot enemies climbing on objects while firing weapons at the player, had a ruined civilization vibe going on in some of the environments. Any ideas? Would be interested to see where it's at now.

Nah just discovered and posted in your Megasphere thread, definitely not that. Kind of a bullet hell thing, there were tracking missiles coming off enemies and from the player's gun, there was a kind of spinning attack the player could do with a gun (jump and create a 360 radius blast of gunfire). I remember ruins with grass and moss growing on concrete, the tripod enemies were able to climb on spherical platforms. It could have release already and I missed it. I'll see what I can find using some google fu...

Bullet hell/shmup shooter, spinning attack, fire in 360 radius, ruins and grass, tripod enemies, etc.

As someone who really didn't get on with the floatiness of the main character in Intrusion 2, Jetpack Squad is like the perfect spiritual sequel for me. All the action and mad intensity of the original game but you just fly so don't need to worry about jumping or anything. Looks top.

Ah shit... the game I started making in Unity is very close in concept to this. FML. This looks way cooler too.

(Look at how that tree reacts to the baddie!)

Back to the drawing board :'(

Must...resist...and keep saving...for Soma...

I am Bread TF2 update I think that's the third update this receives.
I Am Bread really surprised me. A name like that, it's easy to mock and dismiss as a stupid mindless game, but it's a surprisingly structured and challenging platformer. You can (and have to for high scores) master the controls, the levels are unique, and there's a lot of content

Gunstar Heroes and Luftrausers had a baby, it seems.
So as you can guess, a lot of comments in the thread there about how it looks similar to Luftrausers

Dev posted this explaining how the game differs, besides the visuals:
But I guess i can take that opportunity to talk a bit about core gameplay by comparing it to Luftrausers. So recently I've grabbed a copy of Luftrausers and playing it. In my opinion, the core gameplay feels quite frustrating since you just can't avoid most of the incoming damage, even though you can always disengage from combat and regenerate your health. Plus controls feels somewhat unresponsive and the plane handles like it's a log with a rocket engine strapped to it's back. I'm not saying that Luftrausers is a bad game in any way, but it's just not my cup of tea.

On the other hand, we started the development with concept of "it's possible to complete the game without getting hit once" in mind. We added multiple ways to avoid situations when you get killed by some random projectile flying from the corner of the screen since it's quite a problem in such fast-paced game.

We made markers that always show locations of all off-screen targets for you, also you got that fancy "DANGER" sign appearing every time missile or boss attack are locking on you. And the whole game designed around that idea in general. So the game is solidly based on player skill with minimized chances of dying from something random that you can't predict and control.

7dWBFwF.gif

Collecton - That game is very rough, the interface, the controls, the combat are very clunky but there is something that kept me playing it. You know that feel when a game just click with you? This is what I felt while I played Collecton. One thing that I could like to point are the graphics, they look refreshing and has some kind of charm to it.

Secrets of Grindea - I finished all the current single player content and it'll be in GOTY list late this year. Even as an Early Access title it not only show promises but already deliver with many core gameplay already implemented

Can't say I had the same experience with Grindea. The demo wasn't awful by any means but unless the full game shines a lot better it seemed like nothing more then a very average action rpg.

My Quick Look on Bard's Gold:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AjKii_u77I

header.jpg

Bard's Gold is similar to Rogue Legacy but is *extremely brutal*. Like one hit death, brutal. Thankfully, the simple controls: cardinal directions and two buttons, jump and attack, are laser honed. If I ever died, it was by my own fault. The controls are tight and respond as you would hope. Plus there is never a moment that the game doesn't broadcast or signal danger. You'll immediately learn to fear everything in the game. "Is that a book shelf?" You might ask yourself. "It's probably going to kill me." And you'd be correct in your assumption that it was going to kill you. Because it will kill you.

The levels are premade, but they are dispersed randomly as you progress. So world 1-2, might not be the same 1-2 in a later playthrough. I enjoy this level of randomness because you can learn levels and figure out their traps in a variety of ways.

There are two difficulty modes, Normal and Retro. Retro gives more HP to the enemies and supplies you with only one life. And since it's one hit kill, it's game over after one hit. Rewards are justified for the higher difficulty.

In terms of game design and mechanics, Bard's Gold offers a simple premise that is fun to play and is well executed. The pixel visuals have a few modern flairs like normal mapping for a nice touch of dynamic lighting juxtaposed against retro visuals.

(I am a big fan of normal mapped pixel art)

The sound plays a big role in the game so make sure to adjust the audio accordingly. The music is okay, but I would advise to lower the bgm so that the sound effects are more pronounced, which will save your life.

Overall Bard's Gold is a welcome addition to tough action platformers.

You play as a thief, infiltrating buildings, avoiding guards and using gadgets to get through areas. Each gadget can be customised using items like timers, sensors, sticky stuff, triggers etc. and new items can be crafted by picking up parts from either enemies or found lying around the levels. The environment is destructable too allowing you to drill or blast your way through walls to get to your goal. Now this is the kind of stuff I like stumbling upon. A game I thought had been abandoned a long time ago, since the devlog, site, and Twitter page hadn't had a post since 2014, is still in development.

And not only is it in development, it's coming to Early Access this month

Alright, onto some indie impressions from the OP :p
I've been slacking on this for a while (damn you Magic Duels and DBZ Dokkan Battle!)

Interesting, I was just wondering when I'd start seeing this Unity asset pack show up in games.
Considering the game originally looked like this
and it's still in prototype phase according to a dev Tweet, perhaps it's simply placeholder?

Any other popular indies that use asset packs? I've heard of the shitty rushed stuff you see on Sterling's channel, but is there a flip side? Known, popular indie games that used Unity assets?

OP impressions:

AnIMa
Not bad overall, but its a puzzle game that neither fully delivers on the impact of the "story" its trying to tell, nor the challenge of the puzzles. As it stands, its a small proof of concept demo drowning in a sea of similar titles.

Breach and Clear: Deadline
There is a good foundation for a squad tactics game here, but its just not there yet. There is a pretty diverse set of tactical actions, but they dont really feel needed. The biggest issue however, is the bland level design. Not only does it feel repetetive, but its also just not interesting to explore at all. Invisible Inc found a great way to make exploration, machines, level items etc feel meaningful, while B&C doesnt make me want to continue or experiment at all.

Caves of Qud
Very deep and challenging roguelike that WILL need some hours of readjustment. Huge overworld, tons of skills & items and an intriguing setting with thousand years of secrets hidden below the surface. I will need to retry this at one point (and it might very well end up as highly recommended eventually), as it thoroughly kicked my butt in the past 2 hours, but if you are in the mood for a new and challenging roguelike, this is definitely a good choice.

Divide by Sheep
Bloodily adorable puzzle game, with a puzzle mechanic that is as simple as it is intriguing. This is actual "number juggling", without going into deep maths. It still ends up pretty challenging with weird level elements, like a way to literally divide sheep and wolves that decimate your sheep populace, while at the same time can be used as blocking elements. Very nifty, highly recommended on PC as well, but the controls are probably a tad better suited to the mobile platforms.

Guild of Dungeoneering
I can confirm that this game improved a ton by the time I played it last, during Beta or whatever it was. The gameplay now actually ties in pretty well with the progression, in that you earn more euipment cards, which in turn improve the cards you draw from your deck to fight. If that sounds familiar, it is because GoD took more than one page from Card Hunter in that regard, which ultimately is a much more fuller, more complex and better realized version of almost everything GoD is trying to do. GoD is by no means bad, but I cannot recommend to buy GoD over simply trying the free Card Hunter.

Oh, I wasn't trying to insinuate anything negative. I just remember seeing that pack specifically in the unity store and thinking that it was going to be used as a base for several upcoming games.

Maybe I'm not the best person to answer your question regarding asset packs being used in known popular indie games but I'd say it's probably more common than we think.

No, I mean, like the three star system, the relatively simple core puzzle mechanic, the short levels, etc.

How far did you play? The levels might be "short" since its limited to a few island spots, but the puzzles can become quite challenging later on when the game starts combining several mechanics. It is actually quite surprising how well the level mechanics come together in such a limited environment. Its probably more of a testament to the quality of the game that I enjoy it as much as I do, despite the obvious mobile game development.

Has anyone played Labyrinthine Dreams? I played it the other day semi randomly after hearing some good things from friends and quite liked it. It looks a lot like any other RPG Maker game, but it's a neat maze based puzzle game with a sweet story and actually decent voice acting. It's only an hour long and very cheap almost every week, so if you like stuff like To The Moon and Always Sometimes Monsters it might be worth checking out.
All I can say is that Labyrinthine Dreams is honest. Honest about what it is, in its characters, even in its fantasies. It’s solemn and optimistic, that no matter how badly it could go wrong and how much everyone tells you you’re living in a dream, your life is worth more than a paycheck and losing the chance to do what you love. A few years ago I’d have rolled my eyes. Now, this simple positivity has come to mean something deeper to me, and I’m thankful every day that there are people who understand that sometimes all anyone needs is encouragement.

OP impressions:

Holy Potatoes!
I was hoping for this to be a game similar to Recettear with more of a sim/shop focus and less dungeon elements. While it does have less shop elements, the game didnt turn out the way I hoped it would be. Instead of more simulation aspects, its just more tedious and would be in dire need of other gameplay mechanics to break up a bit of the monotony. Spending 1 hour just clicking the same things without thinking or needing to optimize anything is not fun. Its a decent and polished time waster, but nothing more.

Interstellaria
It does a good job creating an appealing setting to explore, but the controls are a bit cumbersome. I like how they incorporated the FTL style ship management and its generally a pretty nifty crossover with sidescrolling action/collecting on planets. Still, I would need to play a bit more before I could actually recommend it, as I am not 100% how I would judge how these gameplay elements have been merged together. I'd love to read some other impressions on it though, anyone else played it?

No time to explain
I dont get it, what is going on here? Action platformer about parallel universes in levels that seem to continually repeat?

Rocket League
Took me a while to get around to it, but this is honestly great with friends. Shouting together after you managed to propel yourself across the field to push a ball into the goal that one of your friends passed along the side...feels crazy awesome. Extremely tight gameplay with a huge skill ceiling, that I'll never even remotely be able to reach :p

The Swindle
Wrote about it earlier in the thread, positively surprised me, but it definitely feels a bit too repetitive with reappearing room designs and enemies. The game is still challenging, but it just stopped the extra mile that kept it from being a classic like Spelunky.

Rocket League

I'm not sure how much I can add here. The best multiplayer game I've played since DOTA 2. Massive skill ceiling and amazing gameplay. Game of the month.

Secrets of Grindea

In any other month this would be the best game I'd played. It's gorgeous, animates wonderfully and has a great pokemon "collect em all" thing going on. Arcade mode, too, looks to be promising but I don't wanna delve into that too much in case I spoil story mode for myself.

The Red Solstice

I didn't play this, but Alex did:

At the end of the long, blood-drenched day, there are enough tight co-op hooks here to make The Red Solstice an essential PvE purchase. A tight, focused experience that does away with the casual-friendly chumpery that dilutes developer vision in favour of expanding audience. Here, you live and die – the latter more than the former – by a ruthless law of the iron oxide jungle. Learn its ways, play by its rules.

tumblr_nsc7i0cuDF1rupf0do1_500.gif

Because its not actually that wide of a variety if you are forced to replay every level a million times with minor alterations. In one hour, I played the start area (or variations thereof) like 15 times with some different enemies and different main chars, and defeated certain bosses 5 times (the ufo and the crab respectively in the gif above).

Also, there just isnt any depth to the gameplay itself. Dying is barely an issue (you instantly respawn), platforming doesnt work that well and is generally more of a joke and battles usually dont revolved around more then "keep your mouse pressed and aim at target. If you die, continue after respawn. Repeat".

There might be more here that I am missing, but I see no reason to play this game, at all.

Really? I've seen footage of stuff like precision platforming around spikes. another level type where you stick to walls and need to catapult through the levels evading obstacles, etc.

Footage and gameplay seemed a lot more varied and complex than your impressions.

HowLongToBeat says the playtime ranges from 2.5 to 4 hours

Maybe it starts to build up to that eventually, but I wouldnt even want to do precision platforming with those controls to be honest :p

Its probably better than my first impressions made it out to be (which I also partially blame on my sunday gaming marathon), considering the impressions I read everywhere else, but even considering that, the asking price of 15€ seems a bit disproportionally steep.
