Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Somehow him shooting himself in the end is what the character is all about or worse yet, getting executed for war crimes with Otacon lol.

If any of the above happened I would've been done with this series in 2008. As much as I criticize things about the story and how it's handled in MGS4, I breathe a sigh of relief when I think about what it was originally going to be.

@Verendus: You haven't seen the real ending yet, though? Not that it will change the entire game, but specifically regarding your comment about the fact it doesn't close the story or anything. And even if you did, there is probably a secret ending like PW that nobody has gotten to yet... right?

The Kinda Funny review is a perfect example of why we don't need scores. I feel like I know exactly what he thought of the game after listening to it without assigning a number

Woah what do you mean character assassination of Solid snake in MGS4. MGS4 is his best moment and it shows he is the hero all other characters only wish he could be. The entire game is about snake basically being tortured in every way a man could be tortured but because he is the greatest soldier, because he is the ultimate hero he still puts the fate of the world on his shoulders. He does it not for country or control but because of love of his friends and to do what is right. He represents everything The Boss actually wanted to represent.

MGS4 is snakes shining moment.

Yup. Old Snake is by far the best incarnation of Snake.

Dawg how hype are you

I'm hyped as fuck

This might sound like a ridiculous complaint but the game sounds too long. I felt like games like MGS3 and RE4 have perfect length, 15-20 hrs, that lend themselves to easy replayability. After a 120 hr trek through Witcher 3, I'm a bit exhausted with long games.

I've been feeling this way for a long time. I don't know how long a narrative-light side mission heavy open world micro-management army simulation Metal Gear experience can hold my attention. I sort of got off the hype train a while ago and am picking this up mostly because I feel obligated to support stealth games and finish a series I've been playing for a long time now. *shrug* The reviews don't really get me going. I'd love if the game won me over though, and will give it a chance to do so.

I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of this game, but the lack of environment variety is killing me. Its a huge bummer for me. Two maps? I know they're big but.... whatever, thank god the game plays great (assuming it plays as good as GZ).

Well said.

This business about the story just being another story in the life of Big Boss is disappointing but not exactly unexpected. I hope we at least we get something significant in terms of it leading into the original Metal Gear. Both Portable Ops (which I realize isn't really canon anymore or at least not all of it is) and Peace Walker were said to be about the creation of Outer Heaven when really, they are just drops in the pond of Big Boss' life that was always leading to his Outer Heaven. I'm tired of proto-Outer Heavens and I hope Diamond Dogs isn't just that by the end of the game. Let me see the real thing that Snake invaded in the original Metal Gear.

And so begins the longest week of work in my entire life. There is no fruit sweet enough to describe the jelly I am feeling towards those who have gotten to play this game.

Lawd, it's only the 23rd of August.

I'm not sure why anyone would think this in the first place. It's a prequel.
True, but a lot people seemed to expect that, and I think it only amplified after the Konami drama.

Well, I don't really want to get into some lengthy discussion about this (partly because I don't remember everything, it's been 7 years), but to summarise my view, I don't think the Solid Snake in MGS4 is an organic evolution of the character we see through the original Metal Gear through Metal Gear Solid 2. He has a pretty strong journey, but in MGS4, he's inconsistent. Not to mention him not being able to pull the trigger considering the consequences of those actions, which he knew to be real at the time, until the other guy comes and explains everything after he already decides not to pull it. It's basically the biggest way to piss on his character. He finds value in his life at the expense of others (as far as he knew), which is not Solid Snake.

It's been 7 years so my memory is fuzzy, but I hate that damn story because there was so much wrong with it in so many ways, and this is a series filled with crazy stuff.

Edit:

I've seen what I was supposed to, and that's basically it. As for some super secret ending, I'm sure there isn't anything beyond that. It's not a bad story like I said, just paced pretty poorly. I'll take it over MGS4 any day.

Us guys from the spoiler thread can tell you with 100% certainty that the ending has to be unlocked, its also hard to unlock.

I guess I'm hallucinating the amazing scores and some calling it the best installment. This can totally be his swan song regardless of the plot.

Honestly, with all the bullshit going on at Konami who knows exactly what the future of metal gear is post V. Maybe some new team will be making a MGS6 or some new spinoff series. Maybe they will just make a pachinko machine.

But whatever comes next, its probably not going to feel like a hideo kojima game. So I am looking at is as both, since this very well might be Kojima's last metal gear, and the last metal gear solid to be of this quality.

Not the conclusion of the story.

From what I know, the game may lack story compared to any previous mainline game, not only MGS4.

And yet that could still be sizeable narrative. The amount of writing and cutscenes in the previous games is by no means natural. Or normal, let alone sane.

Man, I played MGS4 3 years ago and all I can mostly remember is Nanomachines are the cause of everything.

not me
The secret of MGS is that the gameplay was always way better than the story anyway. I loved the story because of how bizarre it was, not because of how many cutscenes there were, so I'm not particularly bothered by there being less of it.

And after GZ's audiotapes. I'm not at all worried about the story being fleshed out in that fashion. They were great.

Isn't the final point, then, that Snake deserves a chance to live for himself? His entire life has been dictated by others, even the manner and timing of his death. He hesitates in killing himself because he wants to live, but he doesn't know any other way, until he's given a reprieve thanks to Big Boss' explanation. Is that not a valid character arc - that he finally becomes something other than a warrior?

Right I agree. I'm just saying it looks to me like he's went out with a bang.

Anyone have an idea of length to play the game?

I imagine the open world adds a shit ton of side stuff?

Also, this is all without the MP...which I am really hoping they nail.

So it seems like Kojima didn't want this to be the last MGS game, afterall.

I feel like this is an expansion to PeaceWalker, going by the interviews and videos. Peacewalker was very different from MGS4 so I can see where you're coming from. I enjoyed both games, but MGS4 felt tighter. Then again, I also immensely enjoyed a lot of things in Peacewalker like the RPG aspect of the game. I also felt compelled to go through missions over and over in PeaceWalker to get the S-rank, simply because missions were shorter and more self-contained.

I'm 100% sure Kojima intended there to be an MGS6 sometime down the line that is next gen exclusive and will follow similar elements to MGSV. This was never going to be the last one, but Konami fired him and there's that.

I hope Konami does make an MGS6, whether it turns out shit or not.

Which might have been fine if it wasn't for the fact that it's supposed to be a biopic.. If some of the spoilers I've heard is true as well it's next to offensive how poorly Kojima seem to understand how to create a narrative. He's become the George lucas of game making

Is there a lot of foliage/jungle like in MGS3?

Sorry, havent totally been following.

"this time, Snake won't really speak much at all. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an open world game focused on giving freedom to the player who will drive Snake's actions. Snake himself will be more of a silent protagonist similar to Mad Max in Mad Max 2. It's the characters around him who will expand the story."

-Kojima

I think this approach is whats causing some of the concerns. But I think personally I will appreciate that. When the world and other characters show you the story rather than take the time to explain it to you, I feel like the movie or game's world is stronger for it.

Just 2 more weeks till I find out, but the gameplay looks like the open world game I have wanted for a long time, and I can be satisfied with that at least.

Or They could sell the ip to a big brand and hire Kojima with it.

Nice dream eh.

It's actually exciting to hear Jason Schrier say that the dialogue in the tapes is better written than the cutscenes. Which to me, means that it's loads better than the codec calls.

Yeah there's something iconic about the codec, but it's time and place is gone. The amount of exposition in those codes was...insane. Some of them were ridiculously long, I'm pretty sure in MGS3 like, before the game starts you have to go through atleast 10-15 minutes worth of codec in the first area.

It's great. It's an evolution. One thing I love about MGS, is that each one introduces new gameplay elements that drastically change the way the game is played. And MGSV with their cassettes is another evolutions.

If the spoilers I've read of this are true, then the plot is going to be incredibly disappointing. It may even become my least favorite game in the series. I really hope that they are not true....
