iOS Gaming August 2015 | Last chance to play your favorites before iOS9 breaks them

According to TA, Galak-Z mobile will be "published by GungHo, so more than likely it'll be a free to play game"

That's one way to smash my hype with a sledge hammer, especially after One Finger Death Punch was butchered by F2P aspects.

Yeah, when I saw "GungHo" I though "Uh Oh". It's not going to be good, is it :(

I was wondering what apps there might be that alert you when other apps you're interested in are discounted or become free...

F*** me. This bugs the crap out of me. Seriously. There have been quite a few PC/console to iOS premium success stories lately. Why? Just why?

Dungeon of the Endless, I would say, was not a well known PC game and it's currently #36 on the charts. And ones that are well known, like Goat Simulator are near the top of the charts.

Argue as much as you want about games needing to be F2P, but premium should still be doable...especially when we're talking about a port.

Considering the fact that so many people bitch about spending $5 on a game, I'm not surprised. The market makes the rules. F2P just makes more money for companies. If that's the case, then I'm okay with it because these games might not be released otherwise. Of course, they could do a hybrid F2P/paid like Deathwatch. Though, to be honest, paying a premium price for a game and still offering freemium aspects just rubs me the wrong way.

Forgive me for this but I've been reading this thread for years and I see things like this pretty often and I don't understand the response.

Had been interested in this on PS4 but heard it had some issues. Hope those have been patched and the iOS release will be solid.

Sounds much deeper and strategic than the twin stick shooter the screen shots and gifs would lead you to believe.

Game looks good has some issue on the PS4

no idea how they'll get this to play right - it takes a lot of concentration and dexterity to play with a DS4

Game is difficult with a physical controller.

There is no certainty (although GungHo kinda has a track record) that this game will be F2P, or that it will be released as a twin stick shooter, or that it is even a game you would want on mobile. Why the anger and frustration? I don't understand this, I see it all the time and it doesn't make sense to me.

I kinda understand frustration over Fallout, Marvel, and Star Wars F2P games as those are properties people are familiar with, and want to play games with those characters and in those settings. Can someone explain why it would even matter if some other game is made F2P?

I think it bothers me much more when it's a port because then you really see how F2P compared to the premium experience. And the comparison is usually not good.

While there are good F2P games, I don't think I can think of a single game that was a port that was actually good.

Take Trials Frontier, for example. Not a straight port but it is just horrible compared to its console counterparts.

It's not like an original iOS game where the F2P system is built from scratch. It's taking a premium game and shoehorning freemium into it. And it usually doesn't work that way.

Can anyone here think of a single good PC/console port that is F2P? It's actually hard to think of many because almost all of them are launched as premium. One Finger Death Punch is another horrible example of how a port can be trashed by freemium.

----

On another topic, if you are around Pitta, I have a Deathwatch question.

Is there any way to see on a weapon or wargear item what class or other requirement there is for equipping it?

I just got a Missile Launcher, but none of my squad is able to equip it. It'd be nice to know who could.

Thing is, so few are freemium. Most ports are paid or free with a full game unlock like Crimsonland and Chronology

The few that I can think of off the top of my head would be Castlestorm, One Finger Death Punch...and that's about it

Oh, and nice to see these threads keep growing. Last month reached 14 pages, and with all the releases coming out tomorrow, this thread is definitely going to past that

i'm neither angry nor frustrated, as i don't think the game would translate well 1:1 to iOS.

indeed i'd rather Galak-Z do something F2P if it's profitable - they're a small studio and basically spent all their money creating the game.

It's sad period that all PQ games are now F2P. Such a great series when it started.

Now it has little of the original RPG feel and add the freemium crap and I am no longer a PQ fan.

And frankly, I feel Hero Emblems far out did even the first two "true" Puzzle Quest games and is the game to beat for RPG match threes. And it won't be an easy feat.

And seriously, how many PQ redskins do we need?

There hasn't been a good PQ since the first one, IMHO. I haven't tried Hero Emblems, so Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is my favourite in the genre, and mainly because the actual puzzle combat is awesome in that game.

Missile launcher are devastator weapons.
So you need one to equip (the pyramid icon).
Plus it could be a specific chapter only weapon, so you need that chapter devastator (Space Wolf, Blood Angel, Ultramarine).
So specific weapons are usually the best ones.
These info should be on the weapon info panel, both as icons and descriptions.

Like this one (not a rocket launcher but you get the idea)...this is a melee only weapons (assault marine) for Blood Angels...so only a Blood Angel assault marine can equip it:

Right. I have seen on some weapons the notation that it requires a Space Wolf or Blood Angel to equip. But the Missle Launcher didn't have anything on the card except a chance of doing a some percent more of critical damage or something like that.

Tried to post the screenshot but for some reason everytime I try to add one to my post NeoGAF crashes on me.

As you can read a few posts up, my frustration is seeing a PC or console port possibly going F2P when almost every single port has been premium.

You're right it could be something completely different. But if it is a port, and it sounds like it will be some sort of port as opposed to a completely different game like Fallout Shelter, then, yes, I am concerned.

You can't shoehorn F2P into a premium game without losing something in the translation. As I mentioned, original iOS games can be built with F2P in mind. I just don't think it usually lends itself well to a game that is premium elsewhere. And if it turns out like One Finger Death Punch, it will be skewered by gamers and critics alike so F2P doesn't necessarily translate to a profit either.

We'll see how this turns out, but as a gamer, I'd certainly rather pay for a pure port than a game where F2P is forced. The upcoming Torchlight mobile also has me concerned. Even if that is built specifically for mobile, it is a well established game and one that I hope is not seriously tarnished by freemium mechanics, which sadly it sounds like it will. Specifically for that game, I have little doubt that it would have done quite well as a premium game since it is a well known IP.

It's things like this that make console and PC gamers look down even more at mobile.

But as More_Badass mentioned, thankfully, almost all PC and console ports are premium.

They changed their freemium plans: removed the timers and IAP is now optional :D

Maybe that is why I'm confused. If the concern with a specific game going F2P is because you want to support the developer but you don't want F2P the frustration is easier to understand. Also on iOS I rarely look for ports of PC or console games. I want great games that are suited to the platform not great games ported to a mobile platform.

While there are exceptions to this of course, like the Cave shooters or X-Com, FTL, and Out There, but for the most part I'd rather play something new, built for my phone or tablet. I've played enough ports and emulated games on mobile to know, no matter how badly I want them to work many don't fit mobile.

There is generally quite a bit of salt about F2P in this thread and while I too feel like it ruins a lot of potentially good games, it's just water under the bridge to me, one less game to worry about.

Dragon Coins servers shut down , this pisses me off since i liked that game. i can never put my complete trust in always online games.

Still not the 30+ we used to get :/
30+?

Looking at some of the 2014 threads, the page numbers were around 18-25. I wouldn't be surprised if this month, we reach 16 or 17 pages, so we're getting there

But consider this. A mobile-focused thread, in the Community section, has always double the activity of the PC-focused Indie Games threads in the main Gaming section. That's pretty impressive

Is there plans for Dungeon of the Endless to come to iPhone or is that a no go?
I don't know, but I think it would a poor experience. Too cramped

To be fair, I think that about most games now that I have an iPad Mini. But in DoTE, you need to:

- Tap small individual nodes to place towers
- Tap character portraits and icons to select them
- Tap drop-down icons for special abilities
- Pause the gameplay to set commands
- See a large section of the map as you're escorting your crystal

All simultaneously

It wouldn't be a good fit for an iPhone screen

Wow that was fast. It seems like they gave up on that pretty quick. I wonder if it was that expensive to keep it going. I played that game a lot when it first came out, but when I started hitting the F2P wall / grind I kinda gave up on it.

Looking back, yeah, guess I overestimated the numbers we used to have. Your right though, a Mobile thread getting more pages than a PC indie thread is indeed impressive.

@Prune

Good, considering how amazing the game was, they rightfully deserve those numbers.

Strange. They said it couldn't be done on the Vita and scrapped that version.

Lara Croft GO review is done...need to wait till Thursday to share it

Let's just say I'm incredibly hyped for the inevitable Deus Ex/Thief/Just Cause/Kane & Lynch/Sleeping Dogs follow-up

Out of curiosity: who is still playing Monsters Ate My Metropolis? Of those who are playing, how much money have you spent and how far do you feel yourself advancing?

I gave up quickly, because the game screams "pay-to-win." It's a shame, because the core game is quite enjoyable, but with the way that the tournament and card pack structure is set up, I just can't support it.

There is some hacker and matchmaking stuff we are dealing with at present which should make things less daunting in a few weeks.

Yeah happens to me too on NeoGAF from ipad and iphone.
Only way I found is to manually tag the image (I press QUOTE then substitute QUOTE with IMG) and inside I paste the link.
Anyway...if you want I can check in the codex...just tell me the name of the weapon or its codex position.

You are equipping it on a devastator right?
Only Devastators can equip heavy weapons, which generally require more than 1 AP. (2 or 3 in case of rocket launchers).
Devastators are the ones with the pyramid icon.

When your review of Lara Croft GO will be online More_Badass?
Not that I need to be more hyped about the game anyway....

I predict the next 'GO' installment could be Deus Ex GO.
I am already drooling.

OMG Ski Safari 2!!! And is even better than the first one!! You can now choose between skis and a snowboard and boy and girl. And the new 3D animations are gorgeous. OMG gameplay is even better as well!!! You can now do tricks in the air by swiping, even skip animals and obstacles on your way doing tricks. Its like the took everything that was good on the first one and made it even better! No pay-to-win also, the IAP is like the first one: OPTIONAL. A coin doubler (bought!), and three IAPS, the maximum costs 4$ and gives you everything in the game three times over. No revives either. Lots of missions as usual... the caves are much better now, the game have have branching paths as well, it even has a 4 local multiplayer mode that I will never play (my friends aren't iPhone gamers, they are starting to get iPhone's but not to play), fast and furious going at insane speeds. Scoring is more fun now as well. Cant wait to unlock the Volcano. Definitely a true sequel with many many new additions to make it better than ever, faster than ever and funnier than ever. THIS GAME IS AMAZING!

What a great start! And Lara Croft GO coming tonight! My day is amazing already (was planning on having a constructive day since I have 3 days off, guess not! :D).

Now to walk my beautiful beagle Maya <3

^^ Cute dog Frost. Glad she's feeling better.

Somehow totally missed a rythmn-based shmup called Beat da Beat.

It was out on Android, but appears to have been pulled. Now the iOS version is out. PG only gave it a 6/10 but didn't give a whole lot of detail as to why (one of those mini reviews). But the trailer looks awesome.

This may be the wrong place to ask, but I couldn't find an Angry Birds 2 thread.

Please don't judge me for playing Angry Birds 2. It is mindless and relaxing. My experience with AB2 is very similar to my experience with Electroplankton. Hehe.

Anyway, I cannot figure out how to populate my Friends List (or whatever it is called) in Angry Birds 2. I've connected to Facebook in AB2. My (real-life) friends have connected to Facebook in AB2. We're friends on Facebook. We're friends in Game Centre. But the game believes that I have no friends. My friends are having the same issue.

This is annoying because I want to be able to share a gift with my friends so that I can complete the daily mission. Sigh.

Holy crap. I know this is an iOS thread and I'll have to post this in the Android thread too, but the long rumored Amazon "Underground" App is live. It's an app for the Amazon store, but it has $10,000 in permanently free games and apps.

Originally most people thought this was going to be tied to Amazon Prime membership, but it's not. It's just...free.

Haven't looked at everything but right now the games include Badland, Goat Simulator, Duck Tales Remastered, Castle of Illusion, Sonic CD and freemium games like Star Wars Rebels with ALL in-app's free. It's insane. Even the IAPs in Goat Simulator that are optional after the original $4.99 are free.

I hope Amazon is paying these devs appropriately. But needless to say, if you have an Android. Go to Amazon and download the Underground App.

On my way to a doctor appointment but will start a thread when I get home.

Just read this on Amazon:

We’ve made this possible by working out a new business model with app and game developers: we’re paying them a certain amount on a per-minute played basis in exchange for them waiving their normal in-app fees. To be clear, we’re the ones picking up those per minute charges—so for you it’s simply free. Just look for apps and games marked with an "Actually Free" banner.

----

Shouldnt be typing and driving, but it's insane. Space Marshalls, Shadowgun, Shadow Blade and a lot more are in there.

What's interesting is it sounds like the devs will get paid the more we play their game. Wonder if it requires an Internet connection or if their app tracks it.

Trigonarium is coming to Steam next month, will be interesting to see how it does compared to Inferno 2

And if you haven't checked out Trigonarium on IOS, you should. Because it's awesome

Honestly, like I mentioned before, there were rumors that Amazon was going to do this about a year ago. But the thought was that it would be a Prime benefit. So I am more shocked that it's for everyone. Have no idea how much Amazon is going to pay for this. Just as long as the devs are paid decently.

Started a thread on it:

So are they going to do a simultaneous worldwide release with Lara Croft GO?

Funny enough, this Amazon thing will allow me to double dip on games like Space Marshals so I can free up some space on my Mini.
