New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Sometimes it's the games ambition. Robinson Crusoe has one of the biggest faq's around. Simply it's the combinations of cards and permutations they present.
I don't own Mage Knight but I've read the rules. I think I would have issues fast tracking rules clarifications in that book. That's where the Geek is handy for player aids etc.

Well that is true but RC's rulebook is also really badly written, there is just no logic flow to it.

Mage Knights walkthrough is great for first time you play the game, but dont even think about taking a break from the game and trying to come back. As you say fast tracking rules in that rulebook is impossible.
I hope they fix this in the new Star Trek version.

I'm fixing to start the intro scenario to Mage Knight and I've gotta say...The setup is maybe the most intimidating part. I have no idea where to put any of this shit to ensure smooth and easy access to it.

This add on for chrome shows this graph for the game:

It's called Keepa box and it helps track what if any type of sale is going on. Especially for gold box bullshit.
I apparently should have ordered. ;_; Now the price is up to $59.66 from Amazon, one of the highest prices it's ever been. Time to wait for another drop.

so minature market broke
vKjASY8.png

for the record I did not place an order.
A. it's clearly a mistake and it will likely be cancelled.
B. Even if it went through I would likely never play the games as I would feel guilty about taking advantage of a small company and be sad when ever I see them.

now if this was walmart I would go crazy and look up every game over $50 I want to get at $15 lol.

that all being said that order looks stupid sexy as it contains most of the games in the top of my want list right now lol.

Well, it is a super expensive board game. Plus shipping is gonna be the real killer for me. It's going to cost at least $50 for that.

I'm seeing that at $65 on amazon.

the super dungeon explore and arcadia quest games I have in my order are even more pricey :p

either way I would argue that for a super expensive board game tag you need something like Kingdom Death: Monster

full listing in case you are curious.

Hello there Boardgame GAF, maybe you could help me out with finding a new game that suits me and my friends...

We have been playing the Game of Thrones Boardgame over the last few years. We don't have too much time though, I'd say we manage to play roughly 3-4 times a year.
I'm looking for a new game to mix it up a little bit though. We love about the game that it is pretty much strategy over randomness. No dice and very little that influences the outcome besides the player.

I've been searching for a game in the same style for a while. That doesn't mean that it has to be a grand strategy game, but something with player interaction, co-op elements and versus all the same. The new Pillars of Eternity boardgame/card game has caught my attention, but that doesn't come out for a while and is pretty expensive when you import that to Europe.

Anything you guys can recommend that may be interesting to dive into?

Hmm I would say that maybe you should take a look at Cosmic Encounter. It does have a little luck though when it comes to the card draw. Most of it though is using your special abilities of the race you play, forging alliances, or fucking people over.

I'm starting to sound like a Book Depository shill, but seriously... They have Imperial Assault with free shipping worldwide. They also (finally) got Twin Shadows in stock this week.

I still haven't even played IA yet, just painting away each night.

Thanks for the suggestion. Still, it's kinda early to buy it as we still haven't made the most of other games we bought like Terra Mystica. It would be a shame to just drop it.

Kemet! Game is so much fun. Gist of it is you play as 5 Egyptian gods who want to establish themselves as top dog. You all start in cities with equal distance from each other and goals with an equal number prayer points (game currency), pyramids (each color provides different tiles, which are the game's power up), and troops. Points are gained by either winning battles, taking other temples, or upgrading pyramids (or taking them from others). Game emphasizes being aggressive and smart when moving about. Only two things are luck based. Who starts during the first turn and divine intervention cards, though they rarely make a huge impact. A single game takes between 1-2 hours, depending on the number of players and how well they know the game.

Expansion is coming soon as well, which adds a new pyramid color as well as other stuff. Really excited for it.

Looks a little bit overwhelming at first. I'm not against complex games, I tend to enjoy them, but this looks like you need to invest a lot of time to get 4-6 people up to speed to have a similar level of enjoyment and knowledge..
Thanks for the recommendation though :) And the amount of randomness seem alright. I just don't like it at the level of Risk, where it can fuck up your complete strategy, simply because you had bad luck all the time. That can reach Mario Party levels of unfairness..

Looks great! I'll look into it. Do you know if there will be a complete set including the expansion?

Complex? Cosmic Encounter is way less complex than the Game of Thrones board game.

I would recommend that you look at Rex too. It isn't everyone's cup of tea but hits a lot of the notes that you are asking for.

Also, off this topic, Blood Rage is getting more good reviews. I can't wait for my kickstarter copy to arrive.

I don't think there's much chance of that. GOTY style releases seem rare with board games.

Mh, that's okay, I guess the base game should provide enough fun for a while.

Okay - it was the text heavy cards that seemed full of rules that gave me the impression. It's always a hassle if cards like that have to be given to each player - often multiple times - until everyone gets what it does and the game can move on. And the game seems to have a fair share of them. Not a problem when everyone has played the game a few times, but very nerve wrecking in the beginning. Maybe it's just the design of the edition I glossed over though.

Saw this on BGG.

Board game inserts and CCG storage boxes to organize your game shelf and allow for more games expansions.
https://www.kickstarter.com/project...inker-tinker-maker-game-inserts-and-ccg-boxes

I'm not sure if it will help anyone or if anyone will care but last week at work I made a big excel of all organizers I could find to buy

List of all board game Inserts/Organziers for sale

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5fvfLR5E8mGZU5iWFFvdlBwRjg/view?usp=sharing

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12Wxp2TeKpB7JUGO2C37P3BSUOoQSI-1abnQ7sCcrFsE/edit?usp=sharing

I'm sure there's a couple stores I'm missing so let me know as I'd love to add them

I imagine most people won't care for a lot of them especially anything from insert here as that's just foamcore and most people could do that themselves. I like looking at those for inspiration as it were.

Broken Token and especially Daedalus Productions look the nicest but I've only dealt with broken token so far (they're great), no idea about Daedalus.

Getting an order from the Etsy shop right now as I've been looking for a settlers of catan organizer. Will make a short review about it at some point

Thinking of picking up Survive (Space) or Eruption. I don't have the original Survive so figured I'd just go for Space...any general consensus on these two games?

Fell in love with Shadowrun:Crossfire. Not wanting to double up on something my group already owned I just purchases Lord of the Rings! So geeked to crack into my new precious.

Any one really follows Descent 2E? I got the first expansion as well as the upgrade kit for all the old 1E heroes and monsters as I already have all of 1E content still. I was wondering if any of the bigger box expansions are worth it? Each one seems to add new mechanics into the game so wondering if a person has to stick to release order or they can be purchased and easily integrated out of order or whichever sets are best? Recommendations for good expansions if any?

Group has kinda focused now on Imperial Assault, but I wouldn't mind beefing up the 2E Descent set. We still love to play Descent 1E from time to time, but 2E is such a different game and plays quick either way.

By Eruption you mean escape from Atlantis? If so Atlantis is a great game. I've got the Dolphins expansion()which really should have been in the base game).

I think space is just a re skin. Personally escape looks better from a graphics stand point. The sand tiles, forest tiles and mountain tiles all make thematic sense based on different thickness. The shark meeples look great with the fins sticking up above the waves. The space version doesn't "pop" for me.

Either way there both good family and adult screwage games.

Daedalus inserts are really nice, but they cost more than Broken Token. I actually enjoy doing foam core but some of the Daedalus stuffs look really good on the table (especially game like Eldritch Horror). I mostly buy Broken Token insert for card game since making foam core for them just doesn't make sense, but they are also a little spendie. It's hard for me to spend money on accessories as I rather have more games on my shelf.

Anyway, thanks for your handy list. It's really nice of you to share to the group.

Been out of the board game loop a while. Going to be at PAX this weekend, though, so I was wondering what I should look out for. Anyone know of any new promising stuff getting shown?

Last few years, I find there are not as many "hot" items at PAX. With board game becoming more and more popular, I find many of the vendors I saw in the year past now just skip PAX and only do GenCon. I still find some of the board game there last year and discover some I never seen before but nothing compare to few years ago. May be this year will be difference. I find it funny that I am going to PAX now more for tabletop game than video game. I am thinking next year I am going to skip PAX for the first time since I moved to Washington and save my money for trip to GenCon or Origin instead.

So I just downloaded and started reading the Warmachine rules since PP out them up for free.

Smart move. For years I've had a building interest and this may be pushing me over the edge :(

Everyone tries to stop the lava flow to their village but you can direct it towards other people's.

I've played that Atlantis game and I liked it. Now with a space theme, might pick it up since I don't have easy access to the original.

You could try the pc game which is pretty faithful (it's not 100% like the miniatures game) before fully going in.

The video game is faithfull to the fluff, but not much else. If you're interested in the miniatures game, there are official methods to getting in touch with someone for demos. I can help if needed.

Ah nice. Looks good. A similar race type game called The downfall of Pompeii, where you chuck your meeples into the volcano seems similar. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13004/downfall-pompeii

In the same vein as Kemet, I'd also recommend the older game Cyclades. They've just released an expansion called Titans that very much becomes a must have. Cyclades on it's own is great, but with Titans it becomes fantastic.

I'd argue that Cyclades is a bit more tactical than Kemet. As Kemet is actively encouraging you to throw your forces into the fray, and you'll get them back fairly quickly. Cyclades you need to have a bit more of a game plan long term.

Either way you go though, you'll have a fantastic time! Good luck!

From what I read online Cyclades is more about managing your economy, where in Kemet the focus is how to attack. It won't matter in Kemet how many Tiles and Prayer points you have if you're going to just sit in your city. I once won a game with only a few tiles but a well-defined plan that let me dominate. Of course you can't always count on getting all the tiles you want so you better have back-up plans.

That's kinda what I was thinking.

One of the things that's held me back for years though is that I'm not much of a social gamer anymore - too much going on at home to really get out and do things like demos with 'ambassadors' or go to organized play settings. I'd mainly be playing with my wife, friends who come to hang out, and hopefully my son when he gets old enough.

That and I've always wanted to just paint minis.

You don't have to play with them to paint them. :) My wife and I painted several Warhammer miniatures that probably will never hit a battlefield. Though she did half jokingly said may be she should learn to play with them.

Fair enough. The video game can give you an idea of what the world is about, and actually has a bunch of alternate color schemes. There are certainly a ton of great looking models to paint if you're more into the hobby side and don't want to bother with an LGS. If you want to be economical, I'd suggest one of the two-player starter boxes, rather than the individual faction battle boxes. They contain a good mix of everything the game offers with two 25 point armies. For reference, the most common tournament point level is 50.

How old is your son? There's a guy who plays games with his kids on Saturdays, who are 8-10 years old, and they have a decent grasp of the game already.

Mage Knight questions for anyone who knows the game:

Playing with the dummy player for the first "intro" scenario if that makes a difference.

  • You are supposed to select tactics after everything else is ready to go (units displayed, cards drawn, etc). Who chooses first? And can you pick any of the 6 Day Tactics?
  • At the end of TURN (so when each player has gone and spent all of their Deed Cards for the turn), do you redraw tactics?
  • How do you actually obtain Spells and Advanaced Actions? I have them displayed, but I don't know how I actually get them.
We just got a new puppy on Friday, so I haven't actually gotten to PLAY any of my games yet. I want to start chucking dice so bad. On top of that, my Galaxy Defenders stuff arrives today. I watched some YouTube videos of it last night and want to play even more. :|

Apparently a friend kickstarted a game called Secrets of the Lost Tomb and just got it in. A 20lb package. Not sure if I should be excited about this or not. Anyone else played it or know anything about it?
