"At the heart of the single-player campaign is the tattooed bruiser Ivan, aka ‘The Ghost’. A former mercenary, he is let loose from his incarceration at Guantanamo Bay to right the wrongs of his past, and take down a shadowy group he once belonged to, the School of Democracy (SOD, yes they actually call it "sod"). With the world’s satellites and electrical weaponry wiped out, warfare is once again reduced to close combat between soldiers. Cue the Russian; cue the hurt…"

Devil's Third is a weird blend of Itagaki's signature melee combat and first-(occasionally third-)person-shooting with some fancy traversal mechanics thrown into the mix. Ivan can slide, throw his sword at enemies, shoot from the hip, go into first-person to shoot at enemies, jump over obstacles and quickly climb up stuff to get some verticality out of combat encounters. Mastering these things will be key to becoming the Perfect Bald Man.

The secret highlight of Devil's Third is its multiplayer. Nintendo let it be known that some modes and features will become available only after launch. Starting September 1st, Carnival (classified as a "rule set) will be made available as well as the "Badlands" map and a new weapon. There'll also be a 5x XP from Sep 1st to Sep 5th in Carnival mode.

Here's a rundown of the modes from Nintendo UK's website:

Not only does Devil’s Third offer a huge slab of game styles, but you’ll be able to customise several elements to your taste, too. Drill mode gives you ten ways to decimate your foes. As well as traditional offerings like deathmatch, domination and melee-only modes, there’s plenty more to discover.

Players can fully customize their character.

DRILL MODE

Carnival
Pick up fruit and lob as much as you can into the food mixer on the map! Different fruits have different points values, so some fruits are bound to be hotly contested.
ci16_wiiu_devilsthirdjvsbb.jpg

Chickens
Capture and control chickens! More chickens, more points. Why not steal chickens from adversaries?!
ci16_wiiu_devilsthirdjbsyd.jpg

Transporter
"Swipe the enemy’s suitcase, and get the top-secret docs within back to base. Whoever carries the suitcase has reduced movement, though, so play the defensive game as a team!"
ci16_wiiu_devilsthirdpjske.jpg

Gladiator
Lots of enemies, only one weapon – the sooner you find it, the sooner you can gain the advantage.

Hey guys,
Thank you for playing our Devil's Third.

I believe that those of you who actually have the game in your hands are more than satisfied with how interesting and fun the game is.

Unfortunately the scores we've been receiving in Europe are pretty awful.
Some of the criticism we're getting is constructive and fair - I can accept that.
But in general, I'm going to guess that most of the people reviewing the game weren't given a chance to evaluate it properly.

Just as one example, we designed the online multiplayer mode to be enjoyed together with tons of people, but it seems dozens of reviewers were only allowed to try the game in a closed environment.

That's extremely unfortunate for everyone involved. As you can imagine, no one can effectively evaluate the playability of multiplayer games under these conditions.

For me though, I value the feedback you guys can offer much more.
Please enjoy the game for yourselves.
After that, let me know everything about what you're thinking, so that we can make a better future.

Gamers, let's build a future together
:)

Thanks as always.

Pretty weak OT headline. Just like the game apparently.

OT post lacks a warning about the quality of the game or information about the microtransactions.

microtransactions are mentioned right at the top, review thread is linked at the bottom (click on the box arts). plus, seriously, don't try to tell me that the game's supposed quality is a secret to anyone at this point. not really feeling your grumpiness.

I'm going to wait and see if there's a decent multiplayer community after the initial release. Bad logic, I know but I'm broke.

I'm just glad the game got released at all. All signs point to it being a train wreck, but it's a damn interesting train wreck.

I want to hear people's thoughts on the shooting and aiming controls.

He has a listing for what the microtransactions are already.

Oh, I'm on mobile NeoGAF. Perhaps it's not displayed. Can see that there are Golden Eggs but then further info about what they do and if they are for pay-to-win or whatever is lacking. With the PC Version being free to play, there should be more information.

Itagaki's next master-piece
of shit

"A breakthrough for the industry", Itagaki's words.

Tbh, I think it's one of the weaker OTs recently regardless of the game's quality. Compared to others, you could have included more basic information. But that's just my subjective opinion and it's not meant as a personal insult.

They're extra currency for more exotic player customization options. You earn them through normal gameplay as well, and even start your multiplayer profile with 30.

I remember a decade ago how Europe was the one that usually got the shaft with super delayed releases or nothing at all.

Why did NoA got so sucky after the Wii came out?

And this is the title we'll get delayed but in physical form and yet Fatal Frame 5 is getting digital only release from NoA and a LE physical one from NoE.

Fuck this shit.

Reviews be damned! In December I shall be joining the ranks to play this! I can't believe it's actually coming out after so much development hell.

I understand your frustration but Devil's Third isn't what caused Fatal Frame 5 to be digital only -- the sales of previous Fatal Frame titles is what caused it to be digital only. Nintendo decided long before Devil's Third was given a physical release what their plans were for Fatal Frame 5's release in NA.

It's shitty but we don't need this discussion brought to this OT when this game had nothing to do with why FF5 is digital only.

i wanna check this out just to see if it is indeed as bad as people say

my suspicion is that reviewers were just going with the pre-conceived public verdict, as always

other games have priority, though. september *is* kinda busy, after all

yep, that's exactly how business works

you nailed it, brother

I'll be playing this in 2 weeks time, strangely really drawn to this game.

Looking forward to more impressions and to see how bad it really is.

May get this, just to fill in for the people freaking out because it was not being released here, and then bailed out when the game was not the AAAA title Itakagi "promised" (by being the one behind it).

Can't wait to grab this tomorrow.
Hopefully the multiplayer is populated on release and remains so for much after.

Even though December's still a long ways away, what the hell I'll subscribe to this. I've told myself before, I'm obligated to play this game regardless once it's out in NA. I've waited long enough.

Hoping for some good and detailed impressions about the multiplayer. I already watched about half of the campaign of the Japanese version on Nico Nico few weeks back so I've got a good enough impression on what I can expect on that front.

The multiplayer works well, better than the single player for sure, at least for me. Problem is that there aren't too mich people. But, well, it' 2 am here in Europe and the game arrives tomorrow lol I hope during the weekend ot gets better.
