Funny, Ohio interests sticking their noses in Alaska business all these years, keeping them from renaming their own mountain. Swing-state tyranny at it's best. Almost as funny as Jindal's ignorant ass comments about 'wasting' money on volcano surveillance.

Lame Duck Obama is best Obama.

I would seriously be okay with Obama's face on Mt Rushmore, not even joking. The fact that racist assholes everywhere would be apoplectic is a delicious bonus.

Anyways I had never heard of this issue, and the Daily Show segment was helpful in explaining.
William McKinley is one of the presidents who is relevant for his poor legacy regarding the American territories in the modern era. And assassination. The fact that a state thousands of miles away has any influence on Alaskan policy is ridiculous.

President Obama's legacy shall be felt for years to come.

"We are taking our stand," said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who on Wednesday filed a bill to rename the mountain Denali once and for all.

"I'll just point out that there's a lot of things in Ohio that are already named after McKinley," Murkowski said in a phone interview. "This is no affront to our former president; this is all about ensuring that respect for the land and respect for the native people of the region is afforded."

Ohio, however, clearly expected this.

Two weeks ago, Ohio Rep. Bob Gibbs, a fellow Republican, introduced a House bill aimed at retaining the McKinley name, saying the landmark is a testament to the former president's "countless years of service to our country."

The Gibbs bill would prevent the U.S. Board of Geographic Names from considering Alaska's attempts to change the mountain's name under a policy that says no landmark titles can be considered if related legislation is pending before Congress.

In others words, Sullivan, a co-sponsor of the bill with Murkowski, prefers Denali.

So do many Alaskans. They name their kids Denali. Or their dogs. In Anchorage, you can walk down Denali Street and find the Denali Backcountry Lodge, the Denali Center and the Denali Building. More than 250 active Alaska businesses have “Denali” in their name. The Denali Federal Credit Union cashes their checks.

Yet 3,000 miles away in Canton, Ohio, an estimated 200,000 people visit the grave of William McKinley every year, said Kimberly Kenney, curator for the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum.

Great news for the people of Alaska.

Hope recognizing the Armenian Genocide recognition is somewhat next on his list since Obama used it as campaign point for Armenian-American voters 7 years ago as well as calling out the Bush Administration for not recognizing it.

Sorry Ohio, name one of your mountains after McKinley if you want.

I dont think there is. There are lots of things around here bearing the Tahoma name. The mountains' names are kinda embedded in state culture, though. Whereas i seemed Denali was the more desired name in the region.

Seriously, I'm glad for the name change. I was up in that area a few years ago and could not believe how beautiful it was.
