Trilogy means we get the whole thing instead of the 2 or so hours we got from the original film sounds all well and good, but there are about a million ways to screw this up and having Nolan on board as anything doesn't necessarily reduce that number.

Will it be good? The possibility exists, but it's more guaranteed at this point to be an absolute shitshow. Either way it'll be entertaining to watch the reactions.

So many Nolan haters these days.

Actually covering all of the story unlike the animated movie would be great.

Also people seem to be reading the title and mentally replacing "producing" with "directing" and freaking out.

Is there a reason why Nolan producing a live action Akira that will be made with or without Nolan is terrible or bad? Are we acting like if Nolan said no they would not do a live action Akira? WB has been pushing this for years, and it will get made sooner or later no matter what.

or is this another "lol nolan sux!" thing?

Guys if Nolan is directing and writing, it's not going to take place in Japan. He won't do a 1 to 1 adaptation. That's not his style.

Which is for the best.

Akira's best qualities are aesthetic/stylistic. Transferring that successfully to live-action will need a complete re-imagining. I don't think a Speed-Racer-esque adaptation would work. On the other hand I wouldn't want a 'grounded' version either.

Ha.

Seriously though, what role will Ken Watanabe have? We know Nolan will get him something.

Also, if Nolan really is in charge, do you think he'd actually aim for an Asian or more specifically Japanese cast?

He could be Colonel Shikishima.

So now that we are talking about this movie again, let's discuss casting. If Nolan did produce this project, and stayed with an asian cast, who could be cast? It of course would need english speaking asian actors.

The number is unfortunately small :(

Ryan Potter - You would know him as the voice of Hiro from Big Hero 6

Daniel Henney - Tadashi from Big Hero 6

Ki Hong Lee - The Maze Runner

Yoshua Sudarso - Mostly known for stunt work

Steven Yeun - The Walkind Dead

Justin Chon

Joe Taslim - Does he speak fluent english?

Man the amount of people is so low :S

Jake Gyllenhaal as the hero Kaneda
Ellen Page as Kei
Michael Caine as Tetsuoooo
Christian Bale as The Colonel
Ken Watanabe as difficult to understand man that has the most important things to say

Hmm, Nolan doing Akira doesn't sound right. Worried about the action scenes, chase scenes ect if he does it. Also it sure why it'd need to be a trilogy. At most 2 movies would be fine, but even that would be pushing it.

I feel like this should be emphasized again, the Akira manga is more than long enough for three films. The movie didn't cover half of the manga and the material it did cover was rushed through.

Material length is not an issue. At all.

Don't murder me Gaf but what is Akira exactly? Movie? Manga? Tv show? What is it about?

And what's up with the Nolan hate? Dude is easily one of the best directors working today. Is Akira a comedy or something like that hence people don't liking the idea?

I'd be more worried about rating. I don't think Akira can be pulled off well with a PG-13 rating, but I also don't believe current Hollywood would greenlight a project requiring such a big effects budget if it's rated R.

Please leave Akira alone. You cannot possibly make a legitimate live action version without changing almost everything that made the manga and film great. Nolan just means the films will be sleep inducingly boring.

I got vibes he wanted to make a Mobile Suit movie right at the end of
Interstellar
.

*high-five* Seriously, that could totally be where 2 and 3 could go.

On topic: a cyberpunk movie produced by Nolan would definitely look incredible; while the story and characters at least decent. I'm all for it, just to see some cyberpunk goodness on screen.

Mad max.

On the one hand: Nolan tackling something along the lines of Akira seems like a very good call, especially if he's looking to take the manga and turn it into 3 films.

On the other hand: Nolan writing dialog for a bunch of likely American teenage boys. yeeeeeeeeesh.

NOOOO!!!!

Wanted SDF Macross first :(

But yeah I am on board. Consider the alternative, Micheal Bay. Then again there is James Cameron.
