Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

Sixfortyfive found a big level-ending design flaw in my level on the stream last night. I am going to have to fix it this weekend, so if anyone could be so kind as to do a beta test run through the level and let me know if there's anything else I need to change or fix, that would be super!

How does the editing work though? I changed the name on one of my levels a few days ago but the old one is still showing. Do you have to delete the level first and then reupload the edited one?

There's no way to revise a level once it's posted; as far as the game is concerned it's just a completely different level. The only thing you can do is upload your new version, then go in and delete the previous one so that they both aren't co-existing. You do that by going to course world, then clicking your Mii on the top left, then going to your uploads and deleting the older one (which I believe will be the lower one in the queue).

A few impressions, but first, since a lot of you slept through this going live last night, my latest: Caramel Cliffs!

I've seen enough people on 100-Mario Challenge trying and failing to do a vertical level and I thought, I could do better! Tried to make this a bit harder than my other levels -- I picked up a Super Mario World Special levels vibe and kinda ran with it, difficulty included. I hope you all enjoy!

My goal was to invent an interesting mechanic that would be unique to my stage - as that's what Mario games are all about, right? Then it was a case of finding interesting and evolving challenges that derive from that central idea.

Would love to get your feedback!

Really good, neat stage but I would bring up two points: First of all, you need to be really careful about coin placement, because if you get coins in one half and they appear in the other half, it breaks the illusion of it being one stage. I'd only put grabbable coins where they'd be unseen on the other half. The other part is SMM is a pain with stuff coming out of pipes, so maybe you'd want to give a better hint about the pipe where the P blocks come out of, or have a P block sitting below to start. Good stage though! Recommended for sure.

For fans of traditional ghost house levels I made this:

The Ghostly Gauntlet

E180-0000-003B-5D33

WVW69iZcByg8xS9tfX

I liked it but varying paths might make the level feel too short for the player -- they're not likely to do every single path. I tried to get through the flying part, and I consider myself pretty good with the cape, but I got to a part where they only way through is in the middle of a boo ring -- those things are handled really finnicky by Super Mario Maker, are you sure it's reliably beatable there? Fun stage all the same, it's good to have that SMW ghost house feel without relying on puzzles. They weren't all puzzle stages, guys!

This is my latest level, an expansion on circular platforms. I used few elements, but combined them in different ways to create new situations. There are some challenging jumps, but nothing too crazy and everything is introduced one step at a time. The level is slowly paced with rewarding moments between the different challenges. There are 3 secondary areas with cool rewards that can help you bypass the most difficult spots and in some points there is more than one way to take, so even though the level is mostly built around around platforming, there is some exploration in it too.
No instant deaths, crazy bosses or random chaos in this level :)

FEjni6z.png

Please let me know your opinion!

Good! You introduce the platforms well. Two points: One, I'd have the exit pipe for the subarea end much higher. It's too easy to go in the other end, and the pipe is pretty long, so I'd shorten it so people can't go in the wrong end. The other point is you probably have one mushroom too many. Your level is fair and has very few enemies, so the only reason someone will take a hit is if they don't understand how the platforms work or they are being careless -- you don't want to reward either!

Two minor points. I definitely would recommend the stage.

Just uploaded a new course. Since my cape level has by far the most stars of all my levels I figured I'd make a level around the raccoon suit this time. Plus I hadn't made a SMB3 level yet. Let me know what you think.

Raccoon Fun - DD54-0000-004A-70DE

Tough but very fair stage. You set up a gauntlet but set it up in a way that the time limit or really poor play are the only ways to die. If you're looking for an SMB3 flying showcase, I certainly recommend you play this. One criticism: as I mentioned about McBacon's stage, SMM is weird with how it handles things like power-ups coming out of pipes. (I learned this too well making Caramel Cliffs!) I wouldn't have the return doors and transit pipes leading directly next to or over the pipes that spit out more raccoon leafs -- it just makes it appear like those pipes do nothing, as Mario has to be far enough from them before the power up comes out.

Still, if you want to test your SMB3 flying skills, get on this stage!

Have three courses now that I'm reasonably proud of. Would love it if any gaffers would like to try them out.

CF39 0000 004B 15D0
Bowser's Shipyard. Airship level which is a little tricky but I think reasonably true to the original games. Features makeshift reset points if you should fall overboard.

062E 0000 0049 EC78
Wriggler Boogie. A challenge stage. Don't touch the ground.

3A0B 0000 003E B390
Piranhaville 1-1. A standard platforming level based around piranha plants. Not too tricky.

I need help with level. I am trying to make a Bit.Trip runner style level that requires the player to run through a specific course but without resorting to using autoscroll.

I got the idea from the Mario & Sonic Olympic games on the basics of a 100-Meter Hurdles, which the player needs to keep running through a series of short jumps over short barriers with spiked tops.

Jump too high and the player hits a spike ceiling and dies, thus a modicum of control of precise hops during runs is necessary to complete the stage.

The crux of the problem is this. There is nothing preventing the player from walking through the stage and doing the hurdles at a set pace...unless I use a restrictive clock.

However relying on the clock like this sounds really basic, If there was a way to have an enemy chase Mario that encourages the player not take their time through the level. Unless I place a bullet cannon at the start with a tight corridor but this just seems cheap.

I try the cannon method, I guess. This isn't really supposed to be a serious level. Just something for fun.

Run Fat Boy, Run
Level with a section with an item running along the top of the level. You need to convey to the player that the item running along is required to finish the level.

Set the timer low enough to trigger the 'hurry the fuck up' music but that's optional I guess.

Then perform the big reveal, the item is not actually needed. It was all a trick to get Mario running. He's pissed off, but he's a bit of a chubby bastard anyway and could do to lose a few kilos, so you've actually done him a favour.

Really basic level for you all. It's intended to be encountered during the 100-Mario Challenge.

The idea is based on Bit.Trip Runner with a mix of Mario at the Olympics. A simple concept. Run as fast as you can through the level jumping over the hurdles but don't jump too high. Control your button taps but don't slow down as you need to be aware of the clock. Also don't let the crowd distract you! Keep Focused, Keep Running, Keep Jumping!

Yeah, you have to delete it and re-upload. It sucks, which is why I want to make all the changes in one go.

I guess, alternatively, you could upload a second version with a different name, but that sucks too.

Piranhaville 1-1. A standard platforming level based around piranha plants. Not too tricky.

You could've fooled me, I would've guessed this was a hammer bro level. There's so many power ups close together and bumping the shell makes the first leaf unnecessarily hard to get. I don't think what's here is bad, but this level is having an identity crisis I think. The payoff for a piranha plant level needs to be more than just one big plant jumping out of a pipe.

I'd try to ween off the hammer bros and use those spaces as showpieces for the real stars -- the plants!

Reposting in hopes some of you guys can try it out and give me feedback! This is my second level.

Finding Fire

I think you're trying to do way too much in this level and as a result you're not doing things too well. You have a neat room up top you have to use stars to get, but what's the payoff? A flower, and you're back to the start. You want there to be multiple paths, but that just means Mario is going up and down a lot -- which is very hard in this game, and causes a lot of blind jumps and collisions. You've got way, waaaay too many power ups in this level, which suggests to me you didn't do a lot of playtesting -- or perhaps you just have no idea how the player is going to go through the level.

There are a bunch of ideas here: fire-heavy platforming, bob-ombs breaking blocks, the star pathway, just to name three elements -- and any one of them could be a level. You can make lots of levels -- you don't need to try and cram every good idea you have into one!

Hmm, trying to do a good water level, and it's surprisingly difficult. I mean the big thing is to restrict Mario's movement so he can't just skim the top or bottom, so an underwater cave it is. But making variety is difficult.

I played the Turtle Soup (EDD0-0000-0024-CA8E) one in the OP and that was pretty good, but also restricted by being a remake, but I'm wondering, do anyone know of any SMM levels that are good water levels? And as in the water is the main attraction, and not just used as a transition from one area to another?

I feel like I need more inspiration on what to do.

A clever but annoying level, especially that mole at the end.
I don't know why the mushroom would sometimes appear at the lower path from the left though. Was that intended?

What do you mean about the mushroom appearing at the lower path? It spawns up top and should follow a very specific path laid out. Also, I'm removing the mole when I get home. He can make the whole thing frustrating. I may take out the bullet bill but he doesnt seem that big of a deal.

Thanks for playing it. I'll make my adjustments and resubmit. I really appreciate all criticism.

I made a water stage that I believe is pretty good. Has a few stars and it's been well received so far. I didn't have all the materials unlocked, so I settled on a theme that I was able to make happen.

This one has been a long time in the making:

At the beginning of the week I was worried that all the level ideas that I'd had prior to release were starting to run out and the last of those ideas weren't turning out quite how I wanted. I needed inspiration so decided to flick through the Super Mario Maker book. Inspiration hit me within about 15 seconds - page 4:

Nintendo Land - 2F52-0000-004A-3B6C -

The ideas snowballed after that. There's a special secret hidden in this level. If you find it then please put it in a spoiler. Enjoy!

I already made two of the three things that I greatly like; block sized platforming momentum and no touching ground( on that point I struggled to place coins to indicate when to spin to get the bouncing on a falling koopa, and today replaying quickly the level, i could get it first time, so I was satisfied, I thought it would be too unreliable).

I'll have to think of something worthwhile with chaining invinciblity stars with the fact you can't time it out of a ? block. After that I have no clue what I'll do.

The other things that impress me are vertical levels in nsmbu and it's impossible to do here or other things that rely on specific gimmicks, made me appreciate even more nsmbu and ideas like coin rush.

Ah! Thank you so much. :D

I see what he's saying, too. It gets intense near the end for some people. I've watched a dozen or so people play it now, and it's interesting to see how quickly some people blow through it, and how some of them really get down to the wire. One guy had 9 or so seconds left when he finished. Intense!

Beginning of the grand fight:

WVW69iZhuOMtiBzWY8

Here's my level^ Eventually, you have to kill the big bowser (hopefully before he frees the small bowser by shooting projectiles at the bricks).

You get unlimited fire flowers for a very eventful/chaotic fight as the small space changes by the blocks getting destroyed. There are a bunch of other mechanics throughout the level. Perhaps it's a bit too many mechanics at once, but I hope you check it out. I put my heart into this one.

Thanks for the feedback, I would like to point out the flying path is supposed to be the hard way, I've beaten it quite a few times doing that path to make sure it worked just you have to time one dive particularly well, the rest is really how good is your infinite cape skills to stay steady. I have a few hidden blocks to make things easier, the easiest path in fact is based off my favorite SMW Ghost House, but that's one of my big design points is reliability, then fairness, then I try to make it feel like a real Mario stage.

I feel like as if the amount of levels with gazillion enemies has been decreasing. Although, I do feel that more levels with spikes have appeared.

It feels like the levels has been getting better, there are still some duds, but there really needs to be some kind of checkpoint system. If it were there, plentiful of levels wouldn't feel as bad as they are. That's just me though :p

I had the fortune to playtest this through several runs with 10-year olds, and even though the early part is still somewhat dangerous (lots of goombas) for a first level, it still has the bells and whistles that a SMW sequel in the vein of Lost Levels might have.

Some secrets, but mainly just straightforward learning the ropes fun – as is appropriate for the start of a new adventure. So, here:

Yea, that part is really about spamming the fireballs. I suppose I should tone it down and place the two Bowsers in a fairer position.

Hi GAF!

I'm going to be streaming some of your stages in about an hour. 1:30pm pacific time.

Quote this with 1 of your stages, or a stage you'd like me to try, and I'll add it to the list.

Model 500: C664-0000-0047-837E

That will be the first stage, then it's first come first serve after that :)
My latest could use some attention.

Raccoon Fun - DD54-0000-004A-70DE

Going to work soon so I'll miss the stream. I'll watch the replay tomorrow.
