Can someone try to beat this level? It's at 0% but there's a few plays. I don't think it's THAT hard. Nothing cheap in this stage.

Good level. I streamed that level a couple of days ago :)

Ahh, danke, danke. You're too kind.

Ah, yes, that one. I don't know what it was about that level, but I could not stop dying in stupid ways on that level. It was something about the enemy placement that would always make me rush and get hit unnecessarily. Still a fun level, though.

Did you touch the fungi beforehand?

I'm attempting now. Its far more difficult than I think you realize.

Honestly so many parts of this level is difficult for the sake of being difficult and make almost no sense. Why is there a semi solid platforming with fireballs at almost every width, a koopa at the botton, 3 firebars and a bullet bill in the middle. How is that not difficult? And why are they all the same width? And why is the flower all the way on the other side where the koopa goes back and forth between 2 fireballs?

And then hammer bros on music notes? If you were going for challenging so be it but this is unfair in a lot of places. Even the part with the beetles and the fire bars is way too hard. Yiu have barely any space to navigate. And then after the hammer bros you have more fire bars and thwomps. Its like impossible to play this level and not get hit.

I beat it but the difficulty is extremely high.

Challenge accepted! Of course, try to beat mine too. It's 1% with like 2-3 clears at most in former revisions.

My thoughts on the first half of the list. Hope you don't think me full of myself, just what crossed my mind after each. I tried to follow all of the routes through.

Group #1

  • BowieZ
Pretty good. First section felt a little close to top of screen. Recognize some bits recycled from previous level you made. Did go on a bit long. 1 block gap was maybe babying a bit too much.
  • PSqueak
Pretty good! Introduced things fairly well. The green backdrops and decorated castle made it feel a bit different from bog-standard NSMB. It's too bad coins and 10 coin blocks mean so little in Mario Maker. Still, maybe a bit too many in the first bonus room? A newbie might spend a lot of time in there trying to collect them all.
  • NetMapel
That's a tight spot for a newbie at the beginning, and all the mushrooms seem excessive. Coin fountain pipe can obscure first pirhana plant. I don't think this does enough teaching, it more likely catches newbies offguard.
  • Orgen
Good, but almost tries to tackle too much for a 1-1, just one or two mechanics would do. And it is kind of hard to communicate running across small gaps without button prompts. Extra route was pretty lengthy, some of the wall jumps pretty tight, shame you can't do much else but give a 1-up (shortcut back and/or propeller hat, maybe?). P-Switches needed to be respawnable.
  • jamesmccloud
I'm sad the lineup of Koopas near the start didn't add up to a 1up, even with the shellvs previous owner. Accidentally went into the bonus pipe backwards, wasting P-Switch time. Finding the pipe entrance was pretty tricky; not only did you hide the way up well, but a path of coins led away from it still. Not sure why people are hung up on auto-scrollers ending with death, you can make them end without it.
  • VandalD
I like that you had a strong theme, and limited complications. I thought the cheers for the 1ups and the tricky jump were well used, but some of the other ones were unnecessary. The dizzy one in particular could really confuse a new player, robbing them of the joy of beating the stage.
  • Anteo
OK! We've got a theme, and some clever demonstrations of how it works in various ways. Like the 1up hidden at the top of the screen. One or two of the springs didn't seem to accomplish anything, like to the right of the pipe. Bonus area was well hidden for an early stage and fun, proper use of bonus music. Petty, but the coins on the ground at the very start felt off for Mario, even though I know you were trying to show them as harmless and something to desire.
  • Jocchan
Hm... Doesn't feel introductory, IMO. If you don't take or lose the Mega Mushroom, they could even have a hard time with an early pipe. There's also seemingly only the one Mega Mushroom, so if you lose it, that's it. Some of the paths aren't the friendliest to Mega Mario's stomping jump. Did like carefully placed bones in the mini room with the 1up.

I'll tackle the second half later.

anyone wanna try my stage? Tried to make it feel like a level that would actually be in a Mario game. There are two paths, each suits a different playstyle (replay value!). Lemme know what you guys think... It's my first level.

How do you guys take screenshots of your stages? I feel like people overlook mine because I never do lol

When you want to capture the screenshot, hit the home button, and click on the internet browser icon. Then, I got to imgur, click the upload button, and it'll grab the screenshot from either the TV or the gamepad. I think there's a Nintendo website where you can upload stuff too but I usually just throw it on imgur because it's easy.

Did you touch the fungi beforehand?

I can quit whenever I want, I tell ya.

You're right about the dizzy effect. It doesn't belong in a 1-1. Hopefully it does hint at an alternate way to get to the flag pole, but it probably doesn't.

So I decided I'd try to write something that would pick levels from this thread to suggest to me. I'm not done, but in the process of writing this, I got some fun data for you all. At the last time I ran my script, I had:

  • 8349 posts
  • 2964 posts with codes
  • 4506 codes mentioned (non-unique)
  • 2194 unique codes mentioned
I've continued to work on a level recommendation engine based on this OT. Still not done but I've compiled a list of levels (1868 of them) that were posted here and have yet to get any feedback. Maybe some players can take a look at the list and provide some feedback to these creators. Here's the data: https://goo.gl/mYGAn0. I've left a column unlocked to allow us to "commit" to playing a level and providing feedback. Even if you don't like a level, I'm sure the creator would appreciate some constructive criticism.

Technical Note: There may be a few false positives here. My engine has to guess at a few things. For example, it views "feedback" as a post that contains a level code where the poster is not the author of the level. Also the author is considered the user who made the first post where the level code appears (excluding Community Showcase posts by daydream). Point being, there's some room for error. Notably, if you posted feedback that didn't contain a level code (e.g. maybe it contained a link).

That shortcut on second Kyzon level lol
I was skipping parts by jumping on the first music blocks then running to the next platform where I could get some hat back until the end and was happy about those skips.
But when I understood why those music blocks were actually here...

LMAO! Omg, that's hilarious.

Hey when are you going to stream again? I love watching NeoGAF players playing GAF stages. I also got another stage I would love you to try too :)

Work is swamping me lately, but I wanna stream tomorrow (tuesday) around noon Pacific Time. I look forward to trying your stage :)

Ehi, Kyzon! Thanks for showing my level on your stream, I appreciated that. And I'm very glad you liked it.

But I wanted to clarify some specific things about my level, after watching you playing it. Spoilers for those who didnt play it yet, for the most part.
Since a friend of mine noticed how it wasn't clear enough when there was a hidden block in a former level I created, I've started using coins' placement / blocks placements to highlight possible spots where there could be a hidden block, or just something special. In my level, for example, at the end of the first underwater session, do you remember those coins that guide you towards the pipe, correct? Well, you should've noticed how there was a "hole" without a coin. There's an invisible ? block containing a Fire Flower.
The same at the beginning of the second underwater session, where there are the two blocks lines: the lower one is not symmetric and it lacks a coin over one block. That block gives you a Star, which can be very useful for those who'd like to speed towards all the enemies there. Remember: if you'll play more levels of mine in the future, check out if coins are in "strange" positions; there could be secret behind those strange placements.
The part where the block gives you Yoshi and there are Piranha Plants all over the place...you don't need to kill them with Koopa's Shells or Bowser's Fireballs (even if that's cool, and it's something I didn't exactly predict while creating the level. Great!): just ride Yoshi and go on them. It'll make you jump on them
You made me notice also how I should've probably put an arrow and/or a wall after "Dad 'n' Son", since people playing the level could think "Dad 'n' Son" are right ahead, and not just a pipe away, with a smallish obstacle that blocks the way
Finally, you got the way towards the
Coins bonus area
, and you obtained to find the
hidden block with the vine (in that case, I didn't put a coin because there were already trampolines there, which should make the player wonder "why are those things here despite no apparent need at all?")
, but there an additional bonus area you've yet to find. Small hint about how to reach it
It's far along in the level, I'd dare to say...well, just a pipe away from "Dad 'n' son"

Oh wow!!! Next stream I'm going to try to find more secrets in levels. That's awesome. I've been missing a lot of secrets XD

I do think the dizzy effect doesn't belong there but honestly it's really the only thing out of place. It works super well as both a level for initial players and old-timers. Amazing job on yours - it was my first pick.

Hey, thanks for that. There are a lot of strong levels in the first group (and I haven't finished the list yet) so to be even one person's first pick is pretty great to me.

Gave this a shot and ran out of time breaking through a wall that could've been a giant troll for all I know, so I gave up. I might've given it a few more tries if I hadn't come in off the back of that Bowling with Bowser level.

no troll there.
It's meant to be a puzzle room of sorts. Interesting that you ran out of time. I gave the stage max timer because of that room.

Also regarding Bowling with Bowser, I am determined to beat it but maybe some advice for a future revision or level. Throw the player a bone and give them power up like a mushroom in the beginning. Makes it a little less frustrating

This level is an almost 1:1 recreation of the Metal Man level from Mega Man 2*, and also a sequel to one of my levels, Mega Plumber.

*The few changes I did was to make it a more fun/challenging Super Mario Bros. experience since not all the Mega Man elements translate the same

Spent a lot of time trying to make it as faithful as possible, hope you guys give it a try, and if you do, please let me know what you thought of it.

Really solid level design throughout, but what I love about your stage is it's the prefect length. Too long, and I would've gotten bored, but too short, then I would wanted more.

By the way, I'm just re-posting this, seeming it was forgotten several pages back:

I want to submit this level for the NeoGAF challenge. Tell me what you guys think? Constructive criticism is most welcome.

Ugh Andre from GameXplain's two newest levels (Frogger/Invaders) gave me a headache. Such cheapness!
Unfollow!

Not a fan of old-school games much I'm guessing? They were pretty punishing. The Frogger stage is legit tough--took me like 45-minutes I think. I thought it was a ton of fun though. Still need to try Space Invaders

I'm glad I downloaded your level to take a look at it before trying it any more. The path to the exit of your level is disgusting.

There is "Update" in the Name because it's a improved version of "Marios Adventure", the first Level where i actually tried to implement some Level Design. The original is still up by the way, so you can compare it.

I'd like to hear what you have to say about it, so i can do better the next time i create a Level ^^

Ugh I'm at 149 stars! Of all the luck...

Just approximated SMB3's World 4-6 in SMM. Feel free to check it out and star it if you think it's a good facsimile:

yRjbE9H.jpg

The authenticity holds this back as you're stuck jumping up against the ceiling on the bottom or with no room at the top, and spikes that don't even work the same way as a pit. I don't know if the best thing is to fudge it with pipes and a subarea or to shorten the level and have them side by side. With the way goals work, the level could never be perfect in Mario Maker, which is too bad as it's one of the best from the series!

Also, if you haven't already, please try my other top level:
Flight of the Battleship (F345-0000-0048-5D1C) Difficulty: medium
DSYbEJS.gif

(thanks to sixfortyfive for the video of several GAF levels)

‎Tremendous work! Even with the exclamation marks I don't like how the Bob-omb falls, but I love everything else! The option of taking out Bowser is fun, and I looooooove how the ship retracts Transformers-style to give you mushrooms and accommodate the end of the stage. Hugely recommended!

If you were looking for a bit of a companion piece, I came along a nice autoscroller on the Featured tab called One Man. One Goal. Seven Tanks. It's quite good!

I think this level is trying to do too much. You have a bunch of pathways but since the player can only do one at a time, it feels empty and, most of all, short. You're also combining some puzzle-based gameplay with what's otherwise a pretty action-forward stage. To repeat an earlier piece of advice I gave someone, you don't have to try and fit all your good ideas into the same level!

Also, please oh please use apostrophes in titles in the future. "Marios" makes my brain hurt.

Well, they didn't try to melt your eyes in the same level.

It's easier on the eyes in HD and in motion. The idea was to add some challenge by making the bullets and platforms harder to see but not unfairly. Overall the magikoopa attacks are mostly for show. If you just stay out of the middle of the screen you really only have to deal with a few.

Gotcha covered. Played Caramel Cliffs. It was very nice, after the pain of the last few levels I've tried here.

Staying to the left was definitely the key (beat it and gave you a star) but of course that wasn't always easy. I sort of like levels that can be a bit random like this. Keeps even the creator on their toes. It just could have done without the attempted blindness, IMO.

Guys! I've finally finished my 3rd stage. Don't worry about this one. We aren't spinning for Koopas this time!

This stage is a lot easier than my last two, but I feel it's really fun and has an awesome theme to it
Genesis/SNES Lion King: Can't Wait To Be King
.

Anyways here's the stage. I'd love to see what you guys think. There's also multiple paths, and a quick and probably unneeded hidden shortcut in the stage as well :p

I just want to quickly thank the couple of gaffers who played my level overnight whilst I slept. I can understand your criticisms of me using various amiibos in one level not fitting a theme, but I was mainly going for the 'which surprise character will pop up next?' fun angle. I like to use amiibos as my version of a power up instead of the mushrooms.

It looks like there's a lot of awesome looking levels being posted here, but I got to head to work, and when I get back from work there will be loads more great levels posted. There isn't enough time!

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I thought about using pipes originally. Pipes and a subarea would indeed give you the proper head room but it would've taken a LOT longer for me to build and to correct inconsistencies (no easy "copy + drag" between main and sub area...or is there?). That said, apparently Sephzilla just did an extremely similar original level (using pipes, of course), which he posted in the post directly above mine. I may retry the design using that method and repost it sometime later. I think everyone would enjoy having a better "copy" of it (even if the large enemies work a little differently...why can't I carry the giant shells? Why are the goombas splitting?).
