The Alpha series was way more popular than the 3 series back then. They were just bringing the Alpha people who didn't appear in SF4. Except Sodom, who's yet to appear on a 3D game.

I just don't think there is any metric where someone like Birdie is less niche than Alex or Urien even if Alpha is a more popular series. Mika and Karin only have one game under their belt each too though I'm sure Ono's favoritism and polling data helped those characters respectively. I also feel Nash was added for story reasons before anything else (and if so then you can make a good argument for Urien).

Expect a skin to deal with that. Wise Zangief protecting Russian Seas.

Alternate skins just aren't the same and don't mean as much as default character designs or redesigns. You can have all the alts you want, at the end of the day the game (and most of the advertising) will treat the default design as the only one.

Gief is the best returning character from SF2

Guys,

Gief and DHalsim are NEVER separated. Ever.

They were even in Xmen vs. Street Fighter together.

It's Dhalsim.

Dhalsim was not in SFEX1 though, they added him later in the PSOne release :p
Also Dhalsim was not in MvC1.
EDIT: Furthermore
Sim was not in Snk vs. capcom on the NGPC
Gief was not in SNK vs. Capcom chaos

Yeeeah maybe Birdie aint' the most popular, but Karin is popular, and Mika is a good redesign, and Charlie is popular, and is super cool AND got a cooler redesign, so out of the "back from Alpha" peeps, I'd only name Birdie as "gotta put it in the base game or else nobody will buy him" camp.

And chances are I'll yelled for it by some Birdie fan.

It's a pattern!
That pattern was already broken sometime ago.

That's not to say that Dhalsim isn't likely, but this isn't a reason for it.

I think something that might keep the heat lessened up in here is the knowledge that we're just trying to guess the initial 16.

The initial 16 are simply the characters via whom we're going to familiarize ourselves with the game. That's who they are. The 16 various options by which we can wrap our heads around how this game will work.

The game is set up to continue YEARS into the future with added characters. They will be coming, and they're not going to be all that slow about it either, most likely.

By the time Street Fighter Six rolls around, this game will probably have a roster north of 50.

Your favorites are coming. The odds of that one character you really, really love being left out aren't particularly high - unless you really, really love characters like Eagle and Geki or whatever. They just won't be available at launch in 2016. But that's not necessarily the worst thing.

I know he's from SF2, but since when was Gief so universally loved? From some of these comments you'd think Gief was your son who had been missing for 30 years and now you've finally met them after so long.

Given the lack of SF4 & SF3 Characters, the pace at which Capcom is revealing Characters my estimate is that SF5 will not launch with 16 Characters.
At this pace we will probably reach 20 characters for launch. Lets hope so.

I really love all Street Fighters, so im good with any reveal but i really do hope there is more variety.
There are 9 unique SF4 characters and 16 unique SF3 characters in the SF universe.

Okay, so Capcom (I don't care about SNK releases), RARELY separates them.

If we're talking patterns, this is more justifiable than ONO DOESN'T TEASE SF4 CHARACTERS.

Gief is the prototypical grappler. He's an awesome character. He diversifies the gameplay A LOT. There's little to be mad about unless you're just salty about your favorite character not being in yet.

What I'm wondering is if there will be DLC characters in the story already, since I really don't know how the Illuminati could play any role with so few characters available.

I main Chun and I am not bothered by her design. Dunno if I would even like them to try a redesign.

I never bother to pay for skins, but it's there where they put their new ideas. It's safe, since redesigning a character as default can bother fans. And if the redesign is good, it will sell

I can ask the same thing about the Alex/Urien dudes. At least Gief has the excuse of being a prominent character in the two most popular Street Fighter games.

He's been very popular for years. In the Street Fightermovies and shows he has memorable lines, he get pop culture mentions pretty regularly - especially for a non-Ryu or Chun-Li character - fans like seeing him on streams and he does well in polls. He's been very popular for a long time.

Can someone keep a running list of posters who may need medical attention when any of Sim/Guile/Boxer get revealed?

I'm first on the list.

It's really not though. Before yesterday, Ono genuinely hadn't teased any SF4 characters. That's more justifiable than saying 'They were in games together so ____ is confirmed'.

This is a good time to remind folks that Street Fighter x Tekken shipped with 12 mostly completed DLC characters on disc. This time they won't be foolish enough to leave the content on disc... but you can be sure they probably already have at least that many DLC characters almost ready to go. If they drop 1 a month, I'd be totally fine with that.

In defense of Neoxon, there was a pattern going on for character reveals that allowed us to correctly guess multiple characters in a row and was retroactively applicable. Nothing is guaranteed (and I feel sometimes he was too eager to "correct" people) but I don't think its fair to say "see there was no pattern LOL" when its clear there was a pattern but like all patterns, it doesn't have to be ironclad or extend into perpetuity.

While this is all very fair and true, I can understand if someone wants their favorite sooner rather than later or would rather get them with the base game rather than being forced to pay for them (via money or time)

He is the oddest character in the original 8 world warriors. So people who played him had to go an extra mile to master him, which creates a deeper tie to the character.

It's Dhalsim.

Their match-up is just too iconic. The skinny dude who wants you to stay on the other side of the screen, and the buff guy who wants to get you in the corner.

Welp , looks like I was right the first time. Shouldn't have changed my mind.

But I can enjoy this trailer to laugh at all those "Alpha is a spinoff" guys.

Touche Ono, touche.

OF COURSE the Siliconera rumor had to be false when it came to Alex and Urien. OF COURSE. Not before, when we got Mika and Karin though, noooooooo, only now when we were finally getting to Alex!

Or could it be that he is still coming after all and that more info is wrong so far? I mean, what is left to unveil at all those other events now? NYCC in particular?

Well, it has to be a command grab super and it looks like they are making them shorter than Ultras in 4, so...yeah, that's what you get.

Yeah, but half that Super is him yelling about how jacked he is in his opponent's ear. I agree the Ultras in 4 were way too long (especially Gief's) but he literally has Alex's command grab from behind as his ultimate move.

Man, so many people getting bent out of shape lol. Gief looks fuckin great.

Just wait til P.Rosas shows us the tech. It will be glorious.

Your favorite character is coming
eventually
Til then it's pretty fun to read these meltdowns haha

it's still plausible that Alex is at NYCC and Urien is the final boss and day one dlc/fight money unlock, possibly with another character if so i'd guess Akuma

Even though it wasn't on twitter, are we not counting the super obvious Bison tease as not a tease btw?

No for the exact reason that you mentioned, it wasn't on Twitter. Zangief is the first true example of Ono bucking the Twitter-teasing trend.

A lot of people are just tired of waiting.

And Eagle is probably very likely to make it in down the road. There's only 6 Alpha characters left, after all.

Looks like this could have been real and fixed it as quickly as it went up. If that's the case then they dropped Laura.

This was confirmed fake.

This is easily the most boring starting roster in a long time. Aside from Necali, it's hard for me to be interested at all in the current lineup, and I'm not sure he will even be that good either. The Zangief announcement means Alex isn't in too.
