Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

I accidentally killed the bob-omb at the beginning and couldn't proceed, coming back to my complaint earlier about having to reach certain conditions to even complete a level. It's no big deal as it's at the very beginning though.

My biggest problem came from the cloud/sawblade part. As far as I could tell there was no way to get through here without taking damage, please correct me if I'm wrong, but each time I tried the cloud lasted barely long enough to get over top of them. Again, a big pet peeve of mine, and put me off completing it.

Bit late replying to this as I hadn't checked the thread in a while but I just wanted to say that the level teaches you in the beginning how to use the bob-omb: you hit the block, it falls out and walks, then explodes, creating the exit into the next area. Trial and error or even experimentation could have demonstrated that to you so you didn't have to worry about using it manually.

The cloud/sawblade section is very manageable without taking damage. You must be precise and efficient with your movements though. Also, and this is a mechanic not many people know about: the cloud's timer activates as soon as you enter the room, not when you enter the cloud. You must be fast. I didn't make my level for slower play, so one has to be deliberate with their movements. Sorry you didn't have a good time of it though. I thank you for playing it and giving me feedback! :D

And in closing, I'll say that the level's difficulty spikes up dramatically around the halfway point and onwards. There are sections where bob-ombs no longer walk towards the walls and explode, but where you must manually toss them at the right time to open up a path to a door... This path is temporary via a P-switch so you need to be exact with your timing and execution. If you fail, you must restart. *These* sections (There are two sections where this occurs, the last of which requires brutal precision). I feel is the most difficult mechanic of the level because mistakes do occur. But I didn't want to pop out bob-ombs endlessly via a pipe. Felt too easy. The level is meant to test one's knowledge of gameplay mechanics and platforming finesse. It's still got a 0.00% completion rate with dozens of attempts. It's a very difficult level. :p But not impossible. Thanks again!

I didn't end up getting around to playing the copy I borrowed from the library, but someone ended up gifting me the game today so I'll be able to play it for sure. Someone had placed a hold on it at the library.

Looking forward to checking it out when I have the time. A friend of mine is ranting and raving about it.

I apologize if this has been covered (massive thread) but:

Has playing this and making levels, more than anything, deepened your affection for the originals? I'm enjoying MM immensely so don't get me wrong, but in a way the more I mess with it, the more I just want to shut it off and enjoy Mario 1 and 3 especially.

It makes me yearn for a proper Mario game, or an expansion pack of Nintendo-made levels with the current toolset. I love making levels. It's limited, but there's a lot of things you can do with them. But Nintendo levels have a clear methodology behind them that I don't think most of us could ever hope to comprehend.

I don't have a Wii U but I'm thinking of getting one for this, do you guys think this game will have long legs or is this a fad where interest will fade after a month or so?

I have already had my fill playing Mario Kart 8, Smash, Wind Waker, DKTF, SM3DW at my friends, could you justify a will U purchase JUST for Mario Maker? * yes I'm aware that Zelda is coming out next year as well *

So that is how it works!

I am playing Mole Station right now and its hard, I don´t get how I am able to reach that green mushroom on the left, I just stopped trying now. I´ll beat it!

Thank you for taking the time to try!

Getting to that mushroom isn't absolutely required to complete the course but there's an item there that will make things a little easier.

Here's a hint on getting there if you'd like it :)

Wall jump off the wall directly above you and do the air spin thing!

Nintendo's online store sells refurbs for $200 sometimes. So...yes. It's worth it when you realise you've played like 200 Mario levels in a day and crave more.

Every once in a while, I play a level that makes me think the 9 day unlock period might've been a good thing because there are mechanics I totally forgot existed. Most recently, that you can slap wings on a beetle to make a floating platform that rises when you stand on it.

As much fun as I've had with this, no, I couldn't justify buying a Wii U just for this game. I think they'll need to throw some support/DLC at us to keep interest up. As inventive as people can be, there's only so much you can do with the tools given. Actually, this is a good game to play with friends in the same room. I'd say keep doing that, if possible.

I liked that you could risk going back a little bit for a one-up early on. The end feels like a big jump up in difficulty, and I may have given up on this stage if I couldn't have just damage boosted through it like I did.

I wasn't expecting this to be an auto scroller, remembering playing the previous levels in this series. Expected something a bit more puzzling. This was good though. I managed to get through on my first try, so I don't think there was anything unfair about it. Also means I didn't have the pain autoscrollers can be, where you have to play through a level at the game's pace rather than your own. Maybe the end next to the goal could be toned down. Put a one-up there that people can risk getting rather than having a potential death in sight of the goal.

Thanks JK for your star and comment on my level, who ever you may be in here! Also thanks Vandal, yeah I wanted to pump it up a bit at the end, maybe the difficulty curve suffered a bit thereby :>

I just came up with an idea on how to introduce another important mechanic to the player, so I had to slightly redo a part at the beginning again, lol. Also led me to some cosmetic improvements I forget to make to the SECRET HARD PATH.

So here I present again and hopefully for the last time ;)

I see x), I think I keep failing because I reach that palce with Big Mario instead of normal mario, I try to wall jump but always end up bumping my head in the jump.

I´ll stop for now since I am hungry, here are my impressions of the other games I just played:

Pretty sweet, multiple paths, had fun trying to find everything. Nice!

My latest level for your perusal. Not my finest hour I don't think but I kind of ran out of inspiration. Cluttered graphics? Check. Auto-scroll? Check. Rather annoying and lame attempt at using sound effects? Check. Red High-heeled shoe? Check.

Cute level, excited, I liked the sense of urgency when switching door. In my second playthrough I realized I could just skip a lot of this by jumping jumping jumping, I don´t if this was intentional but I felt like a badass. Felt very dynamic.

I haven't been playing much, but I spent some time on a new stage. Not too intricate, but I was playing around with some ideas that I've seen in other stages and enjoyed.

I made a page with my stages now as well, here.

Really creative level! Avoid the obstacles indeed, it felt challenging yet doable, that is hard to do. It forced you to be patient and the level pays off. Nice work! I really liked the use of vines.

I spent like 2 weeks on this level but here it finally is ladies and gentleman!

M O L E S T A T I O N

I tried to make it challenging but fair. And I really enjoyed designing the boss battle at the end, you'll never meet tougher moles! And you'll probably lose a few lives!

image_22.jpg

Enjoy :) Any feedback is appreciated!
Video

This level is pure evil. EVIL. Nah, I am kidding, I get what you say when you said you wanted it to be fair. The main issue I see with it is that it requires extreme precision and that is hard to pull off, so one really needs a lot of tries to solve the level and patience. I feel when a level is like that is more about patience that challenge, but that is just me. Its really satisfying to get pass the challenges. I haven´t beat it yet, but I promise I will.

That is all the games I´ll be playing for now =).

Thanks for playing my level, Naar! Many Yoshis suffered a terrible fate.

It's been interesting watching people play the level, as they sometimes die in places I wouldn't imagine, and they also never seem to find the shortcuts... I guess I hid them well :D

Oh yeah! And I´ll love some feedback on my level too x). Here they are if you want to give it a whirl.

Here is the level if anyone wants to enjoy it, two paths, one focuses on jumps, the other on patience. I wish Skulls could be longer but oh well, that made the level more chaotic. Enjoy!

The idea was simple. Make a tunnel through a Wiggler nest and explore the habitat of this gentle creatures. It shouldn´t be too hard if you are patient, but if you want to speed run it Its going to be challenging since I put some springs to disrupt your pace. Enjoy!

Now that my internet is finally working properly I´ll start trying out everyone´s courses, I´ll start by the last page and play my way back, leaving feedback.

Being able to butt stomp big drybones to knock them out for a bit made the last section a lot more tolerable once I remembered that's a thing you can do. Had a number of dumb deaths that were completely my fault. Not sure what the point was with the spring under a spring. You can butt stomp that block away when you're big, but there's no point. Are you meant to bounce on it to get up higher? Because I just did a spin jump onto the plants.

Nice idea for a level. Got through it on the second try. First time I was too impatient. Like you said, this one wants you to take your time. It's not overly lengthy though, and I think that's good for a level that is specifically designed against speedrunning.

And with that, voting for group 3 is a-go! Here's the theme again so that you know what you're actually judging when playing these levels:

SMM-GAF Contest #1

Theme: Level 1-1 for a new Mario game
Description: Creating the first level for an entirely new Mario platformer must be a tough task for the level designers at Nintendo. Certain traditions of 1-1 stages must be respected while also avoiding the dangers of being derivative. Now it's up to you to create a level that would serve as the very first stage of a new Mario game. Think about what direction the game goes in. Think about a new idea that might be featured more heavily and expanded on in certain ways as the game progresses. The first impression is what counts, right?
Styles: All Styles allowed

Voting Rules:

Once the deadline for submitting levels is reached, I will assemble all the entries and post the list in here. SMM-GAF will then go ahead and try the levels. You can assign points to up to three levels - your first pick gets three points, your second pick two points, your third pick one point.

The voting will be done in a group format. With 68 entries, I will post four randomly assembled groups of 17 and we'll vote on one group at a time. Three levels - the ones with the most points - from each group will advance into the final voting group. In the case of a tie in third place, both proceed.

You can give feedback in the thread and reveal your ranking if you wish. However, you must send me your ballot in a PM, this ensures anonymity for those who want it and, more importantly, gives me an easier time counting your votes. Including the creators' names in the ballot is sufficient. Obviously, you cannot vote for your own levels.

The deadlines for voting will be the following:

Group 1 ~ Thursday, Sep 24 (12PM GMT+1)
Group 2 ~ Thursday, Oct 1 (12PM GMT+1)
Group 3 ~ Tuesday, Oct 6 (12PM GMT+1)
Group 4 ~ Sunday, Oct 11 (12PM GMT+1)

The final three winners will be included in the Community Showcase.

Group #3

NOTE: I have the current group of levels (NOT INCLUDING GROUP 3 YET, GONNA ADD THEM TOMORROW) starred on my account. Punch in an ID of mine (AADE-0000-001B-12DD) and check out my 'starred levels' on my profile for quick access! This should facilitate the playing process significantly.

I too will be steaming GAF stages later today. So get start preparing your stages and I will be taking submission later :) Remember I am a super average Mario player myself lol...

I got to the end of your level twice and died on the last saw and gave up. I could have beaten it if I kept going but I honestly despise the trial and error nsmb wall jump levels amd have no desire to dump 30+ minuted into one level. If I hadn't committed to playing it I would not have attempted after the first few tries.

I wanted to give you thorough feedback but I can't fairly comment on something like this because I simply hate the concept at its core. Sorry :(

Thank you x). I´ll be honest, I dislike overly long levels, at least until we can get checkpoints. The spring on a spring was there to give a hint that you could get a mushroom if you backtrack a little bit.

Just revised an old puzzle level. Tweaked a part that I felt might have made the puzzle too hard to figure out for some but hopefully I kept the challenge in tact. Added a few new twists and turns while at the same time fleshing out some of the puzzling and clues. Now there are more alternate solutions/paths, more shortcuts, and more hidden 1-ups.

There are a total of 8 hidden 1-ups in total, if you can find them all. They are pretty fun to find, and finding them rank from easy to hard, but only one is in an invisible block and that is one of the easier to get (yet still satisfying to find).

Its silly because after dumping 35 minutes into the level sunk cost falacy kicked in and I felt annoyed I played this level for so long, got to the last jump twice and did not finish it. Hence I went back and just beat it. I pretty much still have no constructive commentary but minimally I wasn't frustrated enough to not complete it. My general thoughts.

The most annoying part of that for me was the part with the swinging chomps. Just the way they shoot out just causes hyper frustration. The part with them all in the tube is probably the cheapest part the first time because there is no way you would know plus the conveyor belt in front of the bob ombs almost made me throw my controller when I ran into the lava 3 in a row. I pretty much like the beginning the best.

Hmm, it sounds like the sideways pipe is the only real option for the way I want to do it, but you can kind of see it when you do that. :/

Well, I'll just have to figure something out, I guess.

Place a perpendicular pipe inside of it

I'm fairly certain it is still usable in this case. It's a good way to hide your warp pipes, actually - with other pipes.

If they come out the pipe onto land, the pipe is one way if it is simply horizontal and one tile off the ground. Can't jump through pipes sideways. Doesn't work underwater.

Interesting you have issue with the pipe part with all the chain chomps. All the steamers I've seen so far haven't had problem with that part because by then, they are quite trained to run when they see a pipe. So the idea is that you can run/jump and just keep going till the ending part without hesitation. It is kind of also a "oh shit" moment when you see the raining chain chomps haha. Will have to see if there is something I can do about that. Also, the chain chomps on rail can definitely have some RNG to it unfortunately. Have to think of something maybe to replace that because it is difficult to design an obstacle for players to go up without it feeling a bit cheap as the camera doesn't show enough upper area :(

Really glad you finished it though and I have noticed that this stage has a certain addictive allure to it, haha. It is just short enough and plat forming-focused that people just really want to beat it :) so I am happy for that ! I am glad you are raising those points as it challenges me to try to design better to avoid unfair death. I do want to make this stage challenging but not unfair.

The fact that it was a 100 count course definitely made me want to finish it. It basically alerts the player its not a long level so I liked that. Plus as I said, sunk cost fallacy. The fact I literally saw the end twice just made me feel pissed off stopping so I had to go back.

The swinging chomps I dont like at all. The pipe part I only meant was shitty the very first time because its the first time you see chomps spawn from the pipe. After my first death there I knew you had to run jump hang time. If you are only looking to eliminate cheapness its the swinging chomps 100%. I got hit just off of my wall jump with zero chance to even react a few times. Like the camera just panned and I hit it.

Submitted one for you. It's one of my oldest levels, but I think it holds up pretty well. Looking forward to the stream.
Is there a way to make a one-way warp pipe?
Unless you're wanting to make the usability of the pipe a secret, you can just point a one-way object into the side of the pipe you want to let people go through.

So I have completed my 6th level. This one was really tough for me because it was the first level that I created without any idea of what I wanted to make. I started and scrapped 3 different ideas before I came to something I thought was half enjoyable. For this level I wanted to create the idea of a forgotten experiments facility. Really tried to give the level this sort of "once was booming but now it is falling apart feel. I also again challenged myself to use a tile set I had never tried before so I used the SMB3 castle style. I added a hidden area (standard to all my levels) where I think you'll see a fun surprise . I would appreciate any feedback you guys have :)

Hope to see you guys submit lots of stages for tonight and join me in stream :) It's always a hoot playing GAF stages and participate in chat with GAFers ! Again, have mercy on me GAF and don't give me kaizo stages. Intermediate to possibly hard stages is probably what I'm comfortable with, haha. Feel free to quote this for the next page so we get more GAFers submitting their stages ! Thanks...
Submitted one of my most recent ones. Meant to be a fun, not-frustrating donut level.

Don't have any really meaningful feedback to give, I suppose. It was a fun, fairly easy level. Well done. I think the vines helped with the feel you were going for.

Submit via the submission link brah ! I don't mind multiple submission as long as they're not terribly long stages :)
In that case, I might throw in a second level you could play if you're up for it after everyone else's.

Alright GAF. I'll be streaming GAF stages in roughly an hour at 9PM PST. Currently it's almost 8PM here.
