North American anime distributor Funimation responded on Friday to fans' comments about a line in the Prison School anime's broadcast dub that references the Gamergate controversy. Episode 7 of the English dub reportedly included the line "Are you a Gamergate creepshow?”

Just goes to show how hypocritical this group really is. Proof GamerGate gets easily offended by the mere negative mention of them, like the Tumblr users and SJWs they constantly rant about.

It's like a super ecchi late-night anime.

This doesn't really belong in Gaming imo. The translated line was something more like "I'm your senior, show some respect" and then the translator decided to localize the subtitles with something like GamerGate when nothing of the sort was even brought up. Whenever subs do things like this, it dates them horribly. I expect it from fansubs but not so much from pros.

Ah, that's the road they're taking with this one. Shame. Prison School is a pretty amusing anime enough that it didn't really need the translation to overdo the toilet humor.

There's no actual response there. Just a merely "We adapt translations all the time, our dubs do not reflect the company etc. etc"

I'm not really seeing the outrage from "Gamergate" that they're mad that "Gamergate" was mentioned.

I'm seeing people mad that a culture reference is being inserted into a show where it did not belong, as it has next to zero relevance to the original line. People complain about Funimation/other dub studios doing this all the time.

It's right up there with "JELLY DONUTS".

The issue with that line is that GamerGate is already a dated subject. Why put something so hyper-topical AND culturally irrelevant into a show when people may be discovering it years later? It's embarrassing.

I don't care, I only watch subs, but it's annoying that Funimation ignores the original intent and throws in their own dated meme humor.

This is pretty damn untrue however. Most of their modern dubs are excellent. Not sure why they decided to go "gag dub" for this show though, its already funny enough on its own.

If it's fans of the show, that's weird, given other people have already shown examples of it being a gag dub.

The writers of the dub have been somewhat outspoken about it on twitter and a lot of the grief they are getting is from GGers.

That describes a non-zero (non-insignificant) number of people upset about this from what I saw. There is the "strays too far from the original script" (though dubs sometimes have to do this for the good of the dub), the "the joke just isn't funny" and the "this really dates the dub" arguments as well which are all valid but there were certainly people upset about this that seemed to be or ID with GG.

I don't watch the dub either, because from the first trailer it sounded like an unfunny gag dub. it was evident from the first trailer and the first episode that released, and yet no controversy happened then over authenticity. the fact that "but authenticity!" is now only being thrown out when the script made fun of a very vocal hate group is highly suspect.

Yep, the only complaints back then were the Andre voice change. I think the amount of salt from GGers and "but authenticity" from people who weren't watching the dub up to that point totally justifies the line change.

Funi is by far the best overall dubbing company out there in terms of both quality dubbing and making their content affordable to own on blu ray. Aniplex might be them slightly for overall dub but those outrageous "bububu reverse importation" prices put them below funi for me.

And it's not really a gag dub. Only a handful of lines are "spiced up" for further absurdity or westernized, most are not as much. It's not a Ghost Stories situation.

I have no doubt that there are Gamergate supporters that are mad about this, but, let's be real for a second, when are they not?

Like, any time Gamergate gets mentioned, in any fashion, anywhere, if it's not positive, they will get mad.

OP didn't create this thread with any intention of discussing this, it was to throw yet another "Gee look how awful Gamergate is, everyone do you know how much I hate them" thread into the pile.

Honestly this has little to actually do with Gamergate, and more to do with Funimation still doing joke dubs to series they don't think "America" will "Get" via a more direct translation. And honestly there's nothing in Prison School that is too "Japanese" for a typical westerner to understand.

Honestly it's a shame to hear this got a joke dub because the series by itself was plenty ridiculous that they didn't need to double down on it.
