MGSV in my opinion is a bad metal gear solid game.

Question: did you play Peace Walker or did you say you were a huge fan just because?

i didnt really get into that because i didnt have psp.

but i was always crazy about metal gear franchise since i saw the trailer on demo disc on my ps1.

that changed the way i looked to video games.

i still have my copy of MGS4 even though i sold everything related to ps3.
just saying, metal gear solid is the best franchise ever for me.

now if you dont think thats not enough
i have a metal gear solid mug :p

While I've always loved the intricate story and sense of continuity in Metal Gear games (I mean continuity in the sense that you play a single mission from start to finish in one game, barring prologues), especially in Snake Eater, I've been enjoying MGS V a lot, but I can see why people would have preferred a much more traditional approach.

Agreed. MGSV is a fun game, with possibly the best stealth gameplay around.

But it is not a Metal Gear game. Along with the FOB micro transaction insurance crap I sold my copy and moved on. Shame considering how much I was looking forward to it.

Open world didn't prevent this from being a great MGS.

Know what every other numbered MGS has that this one lacks? Fantastic boss fights.

Most would agree. Even despite liking it, I don't really compare it to the first three games. Hell if you ask me 4 and later were bad MGS games, but not necessarily bad games.

Theres a good game somewhere hidden in it, but it's surrounded by poor or question design choices. It's also a unsatisfying story with poor character arcs.

Disappointing is the best description for it.
This is where I'm at with it. The core mechanics are absolutely incredible and is the sole reason I keep playing it (along with the trademark MGS humor/quirkiness) but everything surrounding the mechanics is so mediocre. But hot DAMN are the mechanics incredible. By far the best playing MGS game.

Yes. It was clearly a bad MGS game. Had more in common with todays generic sandbox crap than any MGS, and that's for sure.

I mean, cmon. Chapters and mission select? Lack of cutscenes. Lousy characters. Weapon customization? That whole "skan everii guy u see cuz cud b gewd soljer cuz....will be gud" thing?

yeah. uh, not MGS. Was a decent game. I just, you know, wont ever play it again.

I think most MGS fans can agree is MGSV is simply not a MGS game. Only those who love it are not past MGS fans or MGS fans who hated linear gameplay.

As a huge fan of Metal Gear for over two decades, I completely disagree.

MGSV isn't MGS1 or 3 levels of being a completely-awesome package, but the gameplay is insanely good.

Why is the game open world? Well, it's not meant to be played like GTA or Assassin's Creed games where you look for icons all over the map and little minigames, but it's meant to be a staging ground for the dozens of encampments scattered across the landscape. Each one can be approached from any direction, at any time of day, with or without any vehicle of your choosing, with or without a buddy, and using any selection of modified equipment you can create. The space between those encampments are merely the infinte landing strips for you choose your personalized entrance to every mission or free-play approach.

The timers associated with every bit of upgrading are the worst parts of the game, IMO. They artificially hamper progression needlessly, and get in the way of the gameplay.

The story is barebones and scatterbrained, but is easily still better than whatever the fuck looneytoons fanfiction MGS4 was. And thank god this isn't another case of being an auto-camouflage-inchworm-asscrawl simulator that MGS4 was during the first 1.5 acts that remotely resemble real gameplay.

MGS V is one of the most divisive games ever to be made.

I dunno, the general consensus seems to be that even though it's an amazing game, it's still a horrible Metal Gear game for a plethora of reasons.

i really liked those. every metal gear solid opening is soooo gooood

I mean, to be fair, the opening of MGS5 is legendary. That escape from the hospital sequence is going to go down in history.

In fact, it's the lack of moments like that in the game that make it feel horribly stale outside of the first two hours. It's an amazing sandbox with very little connective tissue to contextualize anything you're doing.

mgs v was the biggest disappointed of this year for me :( gameplaywise it was so awesome. but i am a metal gear fan for its story , this is where the game failed for me and it hurts even more knowing its the last MGS from kojima :(

this might come as hostile, and I'm sorry if it is, but I'm pretty glad you are one of the few ones thinking like that.

it is a kind of narrow minded thinking that "a game in a same franchise must obligatorily be the same as the other ones in the same universe, otherwise they are ruined."

this kind of thinking is why many developers fear to get out of their way and always do the same over and over just for the sake of selling and not letting down the audience.

I know this is your opinion, but most of the people who bought it think it is a fantastic game by its gameplay, and I'm glad Kojima and Koji Prod were willing to get their own ideas despite the fact they were changing a franchise of over a decade being the same

EDIT: I'm a metal gear fan too and I have played all the MG main games, even the MSX games, except MGS:pO, and I loved all of them, even this, because they offer a unique view. this one is quite significant in gameplay imo and does it quite good

I agree.

Gameplay is great for the most part, but story is just horrible.

Had I played differently the first time through and rushed through it more, my opinion would in general improve but V is definitely at the bottom of my MG game list.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk or type like that.

Hahaha, never mind that. I asked because I had the feeling if you had played Peace Walker you might not have felt MGSV was such a departure for the series. That would've happened when you played Peace Walker back in 2010.

I don't give a shit. Get over yourself.

Get over myself? OK... Done. Anything else?

Classic MGS--MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4

Modern MGS--Peace Walker, Ground Zeros, Phantom Pain

PO doesn't count since it's not a Kojima directed game.

But that seems to be the disconnect. After MGS4, Kojima's vision changed a bit.

I don't get the people claiming to be "huge fans" of the series and a fan of this entry. I just don't.

What's not to get? I liked the previous game and enjoyed this one too. They all have different qualities, different strengths and weaknesses.

I dunno. The only reasons I can think to dismiss it in my own mind are fanboyish ones. Why doesn't this have elaborate cutscenes? Why doesn't this have a rogue's gallery of bosses? Etc. All things that kind of go along with a very conscious vision to make a more realistic type of Metal Gear (V not 5, etc)

Because as a game I think it delivers the ultimate realization of Metal Gear. Not only is it a much more realistic implementation of stealth action gameplay, but there's just so much of it. I'm 60 hours into this thing, with a ways to go.. And that's already 3x what was once the longest games in the series.

If you accept it for what it is... It is actually fantastic.

Also OP you're so early in the game I don't think you can make a call yet. Hell, at 60 hours in I still can't quite make a final judgement.

HUGE metal gear fan? Maybe give it more than, "a few hours?"

The game is great, but it's definitely not my favorite MGS game. It's not "bad" though.

There's also so many conflicting statements in there...the opening is SO Metal Gear, yet you found it boring? Then the open world is bad? Yet the most Metal Gear part of the game is bad too?

What do you want?

Well, some of us were around for Peace Walker after MGS4 and had already come to terms with the mission structure, base building meta-game, streamlined gameplay and overall feeling of the game. Some were cool with the change, some raged - 5 years ago. It's kind of late to be hating on MGSV for a bunch of things, those already happened in Peace Walker.

No. That would be all.

We appreciate your business.

Not a big Metal Gear fan but a HUGE Kojima fan.

Loved it. Played through it twice and will do so many times in future I'm sure.

Never played a Metal Gear game in my life. Watched Drew from Giant Bomb play all of the main series, though. Bought MGSV and loved it. There are plenty of dumb things in it, but it was an incredible ~100 hours.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and all that, but if your idea of what a Metal Gear game is supposed to be is ruining your experience with MGSV, then I have to say that I think it's you that's ruining the game for yourself.

Theres a good game somewhere hidden in it, but it's surrounded by poor or questionable design choices. The story is poor with the most characters being two dimensional.

Disappointing is the best description for it.

An excellent summary of my feelings on the game. I can't shake the suspicion that Kojima & Co were still a year away from what they were really aiming for, and what we've got now is a partially complete, though fully 'functional', experience stuffed with zero-calorie content in order to justify its open world. Don't know if I see myself ever going back to it again.

Absolutely loved it and it's very likely to be my GOTY but I also completely understand the disappointment fans have with it as well.

After completing the PS4 version last month I'm really looking forward to playing the PC version next year once the fall rush dies down. I miss it already.

Found it utterly boring.

The gameplay systems are great, but the open world is boring, the missions are repetitive, the story sucks, and the post-release patches that turn the game into a Konami FOB protection racket are fucking disgusting.

First MGS game I've never bothered to finish. Sold it instead.
