Star Wars: Battlefront | Review Thread | A disturbance in the force

I got so much hate saying this game combat is repetitive that it is kinda nice to see reviewers agree with me. I absolutely love Star Wars and it sucks that I won't be getting this game. Maybe I can borrow it for a bit.

If it's free DLC maps for everyone, maybe. If it's pay maps, then it just fragments the playerbase and makes it worse.

I never bought premium in bf4 and it's packed. I never felt missing anything. I always find full games on golmud or resort for example

Ouch. There's got to be a place for this type of game. It's too bad EA couldn't price it correctly. It's still going to sell gangbusters because of the license though.

Sounds about right, game is all style no substance.

Good reviews either way, might look into it once it has more content.

Love the game so far. Phenomenal presentation, map design, gunplay, all of it. However, I can see why some people, reviewers included, worry about its longevity. For a time-strapped guy who's in college and working like me though, this is a perfect pick up and play game (plus I got it for $40 CDN...).
What's there is supremely solid and well-made, but I can definitely see the argument that there should be more. I expect a lot more 7s and 8s.

It's hard to price a game below $60 when it's carrying a Star Wars license. I bet that EA has to pay a 10 to 15 percent royalty on every single sale.

A lot of reviews are knocking it for lacking a hook with its progression system. IE unlocks.

Whenever someone says it's shallow they fail to explain why or what exactly they mean.

From what I've read, notable in the Gamespot review and others, is that the repetition caused by uninspired map design, samey mission objectives and the game being light on content out of the box are the big reasons the game lacks certain depth. The unlocks are one of a few points the reviewers bring up.

I'm looking forward to play the final game, but I'll wait when it gets cheaper and see how the player base is months from now.

First batch (17 reviews in)

Game Informer announced they're holding off until servers come up. Not many other publications weighing in though, which is pretty interesting... I guess not many attended the review event?

Sorry if this is off-topic, but why are 6/10 or 3/5 ratings in the orange? Seems really harsh, should be yellow IMO, with 5 being orange and anything under being red.

I enjoyed the beta for the first couple of hours, then something about it I couldn't continue. I haven't even downloaded the EA Access game. Maybe its because of Halo, Warzone has me. I love and hate it, but it has me.

It has to "accurately" represent the general consensus of what most gamers associate those scores with, so naturally 6s and 7s are danger zone numbers.

Honestly, it's kind of fresh to get a shooter like this that's kind of bare-bones with minimal options. The playing field is completely even and it's more like a classic shooter from the PS2 era or before, where all the extra stuff is available to everyone on the field and not just to the guy who's played a million hours more than everyone else. Sure, maybe the maps and game types getting old after a while might be true, I don't know I haven't played the game, but I'm just excited to play a really well designed, casual Star Wars multiplayer shooter.

It's the perfect thing to keep us kinda busy for the month before the new movie, cause once the hype kicks in again a week or two before, everyone's gonna jump back on to play.

If they're offering a bare bones experience then the price should match. Then the price of the season pass on top of it... woah.

Ouch. But reviewers, how about waiting a few days until the game is out to give it a score ?

Doesn't sound like there's enough content to require the wait.

The mediocre review scores are pretty disappointing. The simplicity of the gameplay is something I really enjoy, but it definitely is lacking in content. The game would really benefit from more free DLC than just the Jakku one. The season pass really is too much.

I understand how absurd the rating scale of video game reviewing is, but even Metacritic has 6 ratings in the yellow. And 75+ is in the green.

It's arbitrary colors arbitrarily assigned to arbitrarily weighted arbitrary scores.

Don't take this as a thread whine, what I'm saying is that there's ultimately no rhyme or reason to scores. They correlate with how postive/negative reviews are, but there's absolutely nothing to be gained from splitting hairs over what precisely the numbers should/do mean.

It seems clear from the content listed in the season pass that they cut some of that from the main game. EA is banking on people buying it on the name alone and they'll probably get away with it.

Players and games media really have to lay into DICE and EA if the game is content-starved. Don't buy the season pass and voice your disappointment. It's the only way things will change.

I think it's also because games are a relatively expensive hobby compared to seeing a movie or something, so thus people have higher expectations

I see your point, but... I'm not sure it "doesn't matter". Ultimately I guess that no, it doesn't matter, as many of us don't care about aggregate scores to make our purchasing decisions. However, there is no denying that Metacritic etc. do have an impact on the industry in general. I'm willing to bet that this colour coding has a subtle influence at large, though I can't prove it.

I run around and shoot things, then people running around shoot me. The match ends. That is all the matches have felt like since playing it on Ea access.

It's really a solid 7/10. It almost mirrors Destiny in some ways with the lack of content at launch and everything feeling the same.

That's what we (PlayStation LifeStyle) are doing. We are missing out on a significant amount of traffic, but it's the right thing to do, I think.

We attended the review event, and was given a copy of the final PS4 retail build. Unfortunately, there was not enough players to even try Walker Assault, which is the game's bread and butter mode, right? Pushing it out once we get to play it how people will actually experience it. :)

On another note: I get the "lack of content" complaints, but man! Are you guys forgetting that this is the first FUN Star Wars game in a looooong while? Also, not sure about other sites, but a 7-8 score is a damn good one in my eyes. I enjoyed games that rated way lower.

This is what happens when you charge full price for $30-$40 worth of content.

I WANT this game, but I'm going back and forth. There's no way I can support a game that pretty much requires an extra (high) fee for the season pass to even get your money's worth.

Shame because it's a technical marvel.

Maybe I'll pick it up when it's on sale.

What I meant is that they don't truly mean anything about the quality of the game. I agree that the arbitrary numbers can have an effect on how a game sells and is perceived by the public, though there are still notable exceptions to that like Destiny and Resident Evil 6.
