LTTP: Nier.... Now I understand why this game is loved so much by the fans

nier_ps3_esrb.jpg

I wanted to end my PS3 games collection with a BANG, a last game to call it "mission accomplish".... and I choose Nier to be that game.

I was preparing myself for a good ride, so I went in with a good expectations.... and when the credits rolled I was crying, no game made me cry this much since Xenosaga Episode III almost a decade ago.

When a game makes you cry this much... you know that it did an excellent job of controlling your heart & soul with it's story, characters and music.

I had no idea that I will get attached this deeply to the cast... I didn't want the story to ends, I wanted more of that amazing memorable cast.

The music in this game is a masterpiece.. it's the main reason why I cried many times in the game and the main reason also why my adrenaline was sky high at other times ( specially the boss fights ).

And thhe story.... oh my poor poor heart :(

I cried so hard at the wedding scene, Fyra was just about to get her happy ending... and the way the king cried over her. you knew these two characters since they were kids and that 5 years time jump made them more real to you so that gave you a sense of realism.. also the same goes when the little brother goes crazy after you successfully killed the Robot shade that murdered his big brother and avenged him... the world is just so messed up in this game and depressed.

And.. there is the misery story of Emil, I can't even find words to describe my feelings about this character and how much it moved me.... I felt so depressed and sad in many moments of his story, I wanted him to get a happy ending so badly... I haven't loved a character this much for a very very long time ;_;

So many great shocking beautiful sad depression moments in the story that easily and unexpectedly made Nier my favorite Action RPG of all time.

Nier Automata have a very big large enormous shoe to fill in the term of story and characters and music.

Nier might not have the perfect gameplay ( thought I enjoyed it ) and maybe it doesn't have a amazing graphics and sure the game have it's share of technical issues.

BUT good god it have a story and characters and music that will hunt you forever as a gamer... this game already tattooed in my heart.

Nier is a game made for those with a high artistic vision and feelings.

I'm so happy Nier was my final game to play on my PS3, such a way to ends my journey with a beloved console.

Edit:

My NG+ impressions at post 29#

Awesome! Welcome to the cult :)

Just wondering, did you get through all of the endings in the game? And which sidequests did you complete in your playthrough?

Certainly sounds like you didn't go through all of the endings.

This game is getting higher and higher on my need to play list the more I see it praised on GAF. Hoping to squeeze it in before the end of the year.

They really need to sort that NG stuff out in the next game if they're planning to do it. Make it more obvious. So many people are missing out on it.

Maybe put a message after completing the game about doing an NG+ to unveil more secrets, yeah. But if Nier's story is so impactful is because how NG+ is handled.

Obviously Nier Automata can't simply have the same effect if it does the same for Nier players.

I think the NG+ content doesn't exactly have to be NG+. I think that message can be better spread out if the story is well thought through.

Stuff like Chrono Trigger's extra endings are fine, since it's mostly comical. They're pivotal in Nier though and everyone should experience them.

^Pretty sure he was talking about the boy's revenge, not the story of the actual robot.

I didn't want the story to ends, I wanted more of that amazing memorable cast.

Well, good news for you...It's not over yet. Replay the game on NG+ and see the rest of the story for yourself. Prepare yourself though. :p

If he knows the story behind the robot fight, he's done NG+.

Wait, maybe not. OP get back here.

What he said appears in the regular game, and
considering he did not comment other things that happens there
I think he's not done NG+ (so he didn't really beat Nier yet :p)

I dunno
The point of NG+ is that, after you experience the story and you had your own conclusions, it makes you play it again, but seeing the other side, without actually being able to change shit. It works way better than putting cutscenes at the end about what did you miss about the Shades IMO

Really happy you enjoyed it!

EDIT: If you didn't finish the three other endings you shouldn't read this yet.

Read Grimoire NieR for more information about the world, how it's connected to Drakengard as well as an extension of the final ending. Just be aware that the stories in Grimoire NieR uses the Japanese PS3 version of NieR for it's stories. That means that you will read about a younger NieR who is the brother of Yonah (instead of a father).

It prompts you pretty blatantly. You make the clear save and then it gives you a message along the lines of
"Load your clear save to see Kaine's side of the story" and when you beat that it tells you to collect every weapon to gain the ability to make a final choice.

How is the framerate etc of Nier as thinking of picking it up before going to play Nier 2 (as it looks fun)

I think it's a pretty sloppy game. But it tries do so many things, and while it doesn't do most of them particularly well it becomes a unique hodgepodge unlike anything I've ever played. Love the setting, storyline, characters, and score though. While I don't think it's a particularly polished game I respect the hell out if it.

Don't worry my gaffer \ Nier friends.... a NG+ is happening tomorrow.

I know the story is design to play it more than once, I did my research ;)

If the A path broke your heart... the rest of the game may actually kill you.

It runs decently. iirc it's a pretty stable 30FPS with infrequent drops. Don't expect it to look, play, or run as well as Automata, though.

I know, I still feel that can be done better by
having a story that explores when you know nothing about Shades and then you suddenly know their purpose. Sort of like what happened with Gestalt Nier at the end and you found out that you were playing as the Replicant all along.

Glad you liked it, Nier is a game that is far better than it has any right being considering the developers less-than-stellar track record. I bought this game expecting something comically bad and I walked away amazed at how genuinely good it was in way that most games don't come close to achieving.

And I'm done with NG+............

No.... oh no..... my god no.... why.... all these feelings are too much for me to handle....

Dammit..... dammit.....

I can't believe the story.... I can't believe the new point of view of it...

Truly there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so... this is what the story of Nier is all about.

My god..... this game is 68% in metacritics and sold poorly?

This masterpiece of human emotions and thoughts and art is not exposed to more players?

Nier is the reason why us the gamers have a different way of thinking and looking at things and the high artistic side is us......

The characters and the depressed sad story that smashed my heart just smashed it harder.... much much harder.

Kalil ;_;

Oh the Wolf Shade and the way he died and his last words.........................

dammit I feel like a complete evil now.... every battle makes me more guiltier and hates my self even harder.

And Kaine.... oh my god Kaine, your story... so much suffering....

The only thing that eased my pain a little is that Emil has survived.

But everything else is..... just heart breaking...

I take it back... Nier isn't just the best Action game of all time to me.

Nier is my favorite game of the 7th generation... and my 3rd favorite game of all time after Final Fantasy VII and Xenosaga Episode III.

So weird a game I ignored for the past 5 and a half years.... and I just played and finished as the last add to me PS3 collection, suddenly become all this to me.

Oh Nier...

I hope and wish and pray that Nier Automata can be as good as Nier's story and characters and music and sadness..

I want another Nier to makes me cry this much and smash my heart this much.

Fuck it
Im doing it.
this game has been on my shelf for a looong time with valkyria chronicles.
its time to join both cults.
Im right behind you OP.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
So awesome to see more people playing and enjoying Nier. A simply fantastic game.

I've never played it, but I distinctly remember when Justin McElroy ripped this game apart because he didn't understand a fishing mini-game or something?

Pretty amazing. What really got me was actually how much more the extra playthroughs added. I expected a different ending sure but it was all the extra stuff that makes it so good.

My Nier friends....

How can I play another game now :( ?

I have Tales of Zestiria and Fallout 4 to play next... but... everything seems like a downgrade now...

I want Nier's music...

I want Nier's story...

I want Nier's characters...

I want something to tread me like an adult human being with artistic vision... a game to talk to my emotions and soul...

;_;

can't stop listening to this and feeling sad...

Good thing Polygon picked him up...

Yeah he was supposed to go to a place marked on a map. Went someplace else and failed at fishing because his character was not ready to catch those fish. 0/10. Lol

Play Drakengard 3 my friend.

It's from the same author.
While not as good and as emotional, it's definitely just as uniqe as Nier and right behind it in my GOAT-List. Go in with low expectations (don't expect "another Nier") and be able to deal with some toilet humor.

The OST is also not as good, but still got some awesome songs like Kuroi Hana and one song that i cant name as that'd be a spoiler. It's definetely worth playing. It's more of a character action game than an RPG tho.

Be sure to read all of the Grimoire Nier (even the interviews have some story stuff) so you can feel even more fucked up.

Always great to see new people experience Nier for the first time and read their reactions. Glad you enjoyed it, OP! :) You've completed NG+, but have you gone for all the endings? I thought the game simply couldn't do anything else to surprise me and tear my heart to pieces after NG+, but boy did ending D (and its consequences) prove me wrong. One of my favorite moments in gaming, for sure.

Praiseworthy, now that you have seen ending B get ready to have your mind blown.

From the Videogame facts that blow your mind thread:

Playing Nier, this blew my mind utterly. Long post, but bear with me:

These days lots of games will invent alphabets and other written characters for their worlds. Usually they're based on the Latin alphabet, but not always (the GC Zelda games, and more recently El Shaddai, use the Japanese syllabary). I'm a huge fan of this stuff and always try to figure them out.

In the opening scenes in Nier, some orange letters that look like Hebrew appear in the background, and they're used all over the game.

Trying to read them as Hebrew was pretty confusing at first, because some of the letters are weird (and you have to read it from left to right), but it eventually transpired that
they just borrowed the font wholesale from Heinrich Agrippa's 16th-century Angelic alphabet which you can read about here: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/angelic.htm .

Using this, you can tell that
the two lines of text in the opening video say HOROBIRU SEKAI and HITO SAIGO; the first one means 'a world collapsing' and the second one is not quite grammatical but means something like 'a person's end'.

That's not the mind-blowing fact, though. The mind-blowing fact is this:

Most of the text you see in the game is gibberish, including the text on the big round seal on the game's cover:

Nier-Game-1.jpg

The letters used in the icons above the villagers' heads indicating that they have something to say to you are also gibberish.

Almost everything in the game looks like gibberish, but if you look carefully, you'll notice that both the round clock-like indicator used at the end of boss battles, and the Black Scrawl itself, seen here:

Hl9YUJO.jpg

...only use four different letters, despite the font having many more than that.

Which four letters are they? Well, test out that font here and see for yourself. Type in A, T, G, and C (in any order you like, just be sure to use capitals) and you'll see that those letters are the Black Scrawl.

These are the initial letters of adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine, the four bases that make up human DNA.

When I figured this out, close to the end of the game, I was thinking, "But why would they go out of their way to make the Black Scrawl correspond to human DNA while people's speech and the rest of the text is meaningless garbage?"

Oh. So that's what this "disease" is.

And at that point I knew what the real story was, who the Shadowlord was, and what was going on with the Shades. I didn't see Devola and Popola
coming, though.

What a fantastic thing to hide right in plain sight! Is Nier a great game, or what?
Stuff like this is the mark of a great game. When the dev team gets creative with even the smallest of details.

Yeah if the first playthrough got you, wait til you see some of the revelations behind the side events and characters on the second playthrough...

This wasn't an uncommon mistake, somehow I did this too but I can't remember the specifics. I just remember wasting an hour trying to fish immediately after getting the fishing rod.

Memory fails me at this time but you get the rod from a fisherman by water right? I could see why someone would then plop their rod right then and there. But the marker on the map is clearly elsewhere. It was funny how he just gave up instead of trying some other option like going to the marker.

If only more gamers would open their minds and give it a go, truly a masterpiece

It's a miracle that Automata is happening
