Microsoft on background music on XB1: "Taking our time, we want to do it right"

Support for background music on Xbox One (outside of Snap) is on Microsoft's backlog of new features it wants to introduce, but if you're holding out for it, you may want to get comfortable. Xbox engineering boss Mike Ybarra says in a new interview that Microsoft is taking its time with the new feature to get it right.

"Background music is on that list," Ybarra said on the latest Inner Circle podcast. "Windows 10 will help us as we think about what's the right away to deliver that. And we want to do it in a way that surprises fans."

The Xbox One adopted Windows 10 as its underlying operating system with the release of the New Xbox One Experience earlier this month. This has led to various efficiency improvements and sets the console up to be more flexible in the future, Microsoft has said.

Ybarra added Microsoft is thinking about Xbox One background music functionality in a similar way to screenshots, another much-requested feature that was eventually delivered. About screenshots, Ybarra said, "We could have released something that was medium-quality." However, the company also wanted to "surprise" users and waited until it could offer a more robust experience, complete with .PNG file support.

"As we look at background music and we figure out where where does it fit and what's the technical solution that makes sense, we want to make sure it's something that pleases everybody," Ybarra said. "And certainly it's on the list; certainly we're looking at it, and it's something we'd all like to have as well."

Xbox One owners can currently use the Xbox Music app to listen to music while playing a game, but only with Snap. This takes up a portion of the screen, making it a less-than-ideal solution. There is clearly demand for a better alternative. On the Xbox Feedback site, more than 21,000 people have voted for "Play Music From Apps Without Snap (Background Music)."

Also in the interview, Ybarra talked about the struggles of the new achievement challenge rewards system. He acknowledged that usage was "pretty low" for these time-based challenges, which he admitted might be because they were hard to discover. As such, he said, "We certainly want to look at that" to see how it can be improved in the future. These challenges do not earn gamerscore but give players the ability to unlock other forms of bonuses, like avatar items. How they will be overhauled in the future remains to be seen.

Microsoft doesn't have any major feature updates for Xbox One planned for December. That's because the company is instead focusing on keeping Xbox Live and other network services up and running during the busy holiday month. February is the goal for when the next update will go out.

Guess that is the right response, but still its taking a damn while.

How was this not in from the start? It's not like Microsoft doesn't have its own subscription music service supported on the console, or anything...

What is there to do right? this has been done on dozens of devices beforehand. Even the 360. Total BS excuse.

We have a device for people that want background music done right. It's called the Xbox 360.

What a joke lol. This should have been in from the start.

So it doesn't overpower speech in-game?

Oh you mean like on the 360 where it muted the games soundtrack? Yeah they got that right 10 years ago.

I know right. I recently hooked up 360 to put all my save games in the cloud and I was amazed I could just play the music that was on the hard drive still through the guide and continue doing other stuff. And this is from hardware made 10 years ago, sheez.

That guy is full of baloney.

I was amazed this wasn't in there at launch, they did such a great job of it on the 360.

Even when they finally get it working the experience for skipping tracks, browsing artists etc. without a remote will be awful because of this stupid snap shit which is slow as hell and lags like hell.

Why is background music such a big deal? Most of the time it's quite grating in themes on PS4.

The odd one is excepted, like the free Witcher 3 theme.

I don't feel the need for any background music on my dashboard.

I can't complain, it took Sony two years to put avatars on the store. We also don't have a friends notification system yet.

Edit: I have a feeling both companies are going to be slow this gen.

Good to hear they're at least aware of the demand for it. Hopefully it gets here soon.

Too bad my iPod Classic isn't compatible. :(

On previous consoles it was done at OS level though, with a single source of music.
Doing it right on X1 could be supporting all music apps, and also being able to discriminate apps allowed to run in the background with active sound, and others that should be on standby.

This is about music playing in the background of games lol. In other words playing your own custom music while racing.

Cause there is nothing better than playing Forza or some chill Halo with your own music playing? What is there not to understand about.

This has been the number 1 requested feature on Xbox Uservoice since the site launched the Xbox One section.

Background music means playing music in the background while playing without the use of Snap. I am not sure where you got the idea that it was menu music selection.

Eh, I kinda see what they mean I'm just surprised it wasn't a feature at launch or right after launch.

If they are taking there time with it I hope they add another tab to the guide for music that has a built in player similar to the one on the 360 Guide. I wonder if they would be able to get it to work with Backwards Compat games and stuff. Hopefully this is coming very soon :)

To everybody saying "its sooooo easy, 360 did it," what does Microsoft gain by holding this feature back? Before you say "so they can make a big deal about it" I'm gonna counter that with "people already want the feature, its not going have a bigger impact than if they released it with the NXOE. All they do at this point is disappoint people who want the feature so they know its in their best interest to get it working asap. They just gotta make sure they get it right."

Sure, a basic implementation could be relatively simple, but it seems they are going for more than that.

Admittedly, it would be pretty cool to have something like Spotify also working on the background, although I don't think that is what they are going for.

Its pretty obvious they prioritised the most important features, party changes, screenshots, twitch, external hard drives, screenshots and then this year they did NXE and BC which takes up a lot of the teams resources as they were major updates to the system and not easy/quick to do, yes they did it a decade ago and its a disappointing omission for those that want it but its not like they havent been doing other updates (including big ones) in that time.

I listened to the full interview yesterday and I got the impression this guy didn't understand what made the 360 such a convenience to use as a full experience. He made it clear he plays all platforms and I get that, it's nice to hear he plays games but I also got the impression he doesn't quite get it from a overall UI experience for the gamer.

I was talking to friends in party chat after it and we all came up with the same points, such as why are achievements now placed behind my profile and not in the guide, why no themes and a roll out of Gamerpics, why do the gaming wallpapers they have on Xbox.com have to be downloaded to a USB then put into the console and not just simply downloaded from the store and why are people still having achievement unlocking problems every so often when they could be earned off line on 360.

The UI is still full of annoying little inconveniences. I respect the guy, he's in a job I could only dream of and more than likely knows a lot more than me, I just don't share his vision.

Considering more daunting requested features such as figuring out how to get a working 360 emulator in the system has been accomplished I think the naysayers here can rest assured that it'll happen sooner rather than later...

You don't feel like you're lessening the experience by listening to outside music? It's not distracting?

Depends on the game, in something like Diablo it makes the game much better to be able to listen to my own music.
I mean, I guess you can using snap right now but I think everyone would prefer background music.

Fair enough

I find it very distracting. The same with being in parties while gaming.

I'm guessing the team is waiting for the Groove Music app to mature on Xbox One before adding background music. The Xbox One's Groove Music app is missing features and abilities compared to the PC/Phone version like FLAC.

I don't know anything about this stuff but could it be a performance issue? Like causing frame drops or hitches? (I've never used the Xbox music app while snapped in a game so not sure how that runs)

I think people are really misunderstanding how something like this gets implemented.

For this to work, you have to use a specific audio channel for playing music. The system then detects this audio channel being used, and mutes it when user music is playing. This is how it's implemented on other related platforms, on which it has been a thing since their respective launches.

To be able to implement it post-release would be problematic, considering the breadth of different ways that music can be called to play in games, and the number of games already released. Odds are, they'd have to patch it in to older titles, or just bite the bullet and say "It only works on new releases!" which is going to be suboptimal for everyone involved, and runs counter to "doing it right."

Just make it the same as it was on the 360. Boom done.

EDIT you can already do it by snapping the media player. But then you're using the media player for a third of your screen.

Snapped apps don't seem to have any meaningful impact on game performance. I think there's a processor core dedicated to running the OS/apps separately from games.
