Microsoft on background music on XB1: "Taking our time, we want to do it right"

Hard to Kill
Wait Wait Wait Wait Are you guys telling me that on Xbox One you can't play music while playing without sacrificing A Third Of Your Screen?
One of my friend told me it was great as a media box and I was interested to get it along my Ps4 mostly for its media support but if that's not implemented I'm starting to wonder if it is that better than ps4 as a media device.I mean I can already play music in background on my ps4 or music on my wireless hard drive.

So can any of you guys tell me what the xbox do (besides TV because I'm in europe with barely any support from Ms plus I never watch TV) That may be a media visionning changer for me.

Because if not I'll probably end up with just my ps4.

As a recent One owner, I'm continuously surprised by how much of a step backwards the OS is. They seriously could have ported the 360 UI straight away with all the same features and that would have provided a much better experience.

agree 100%.

Indeed. Why they have to change things is beyond me. PS4 is different and still reasonably good, but I prefer the XMB. And I'll never know why the Vita didn't have the XMB instead of those bubble things. Stuff like this should be not only the system's identity, but the brand's identity.

Honestly they should have just ported over the 360 UI and updated appropriately.

A spruced up blades with the newer features integrated would be met very well I would think. Too bad it cramped the ability to spam with ads, which I assume is the only reason we have ended up where we are today.

It just bothers me that a software company could have done almost impossibly good right out of the gate with the X360...only to slowly devolve into what we have today.

In game music...just another thing to add to the pile of things worse now.

I can do it on the Vita then MSFT needs to get this done. It's a fine console but the 360 could do this.

I just want them to make it easier to start recording video and share it (and share screenshots too) to Twitter. Having to dig through multiple screens of the Upload app is a terrible user experience.

It's pretty disappointing that features that worked perfectly fine have to be re-engineered every time there's a new console. It's affected MS and Sony pretty badly this gen.

i never understand the approach of waiting until it's right. apple does it too, just give me the shitty version that makes me 90% happy and then improve it later.

Maybe people have left and it's a new team? For me the best Xbox dash was the first NXE after the blades. That was was superb.

Wonder how MS is going to compete withbackground Spotify support...

Groove music I would assume. I don't know how it compares to Spotify in terms of available music but being able to stream directly from your Onedrive will be a nice feature.

Groove Music has like 35 million songs. It also pulls in all your personal songs you have stored in OneDrive which is pretty awesome.

It has a pretty good selection I think.
I guess not many people use Groove or MS Films & TV but both do have a pretty good selection.

Wait, are you guys supposing that he is lying? and just like has some vendetta against you and doesn't want you to have music?

Just make it the same as it was on the 360. Boom done.

EDIT you can already do it by snapping the media player. But then you're using the media player for a third of your screen.

Honestly that would suck by today's standards. The 360 could only play background music stored on the HDD or streamed from a PC. You can't play background music from any app on 360.

They're obviously making it so that you can play background music from any app. And by "surprise" I think they'll take it a step further and just make it background "audio" and not just music. For example you'll be able to play your games while listening to the audio of the TV etc...

"The right time" is probably when Spotify's exclusivity deal on the Playstation ends.

This exclusivity is so irritating. I already pay for spotify music and I cannot afford to pay for Groove. It is just not worth it so now I have to resort to creating a playlist on Youtube and snapping it with the game. I cant wait for this stupid exclusivity to end.

Also snapping to play music and taking up screen space is the stupidest thing I have seen.

Why is background music such a big deal? Most of the time it's quite grating in themes on PS4.

The odd one is excepted, like the free Witcher 3 theme.

I don't feel the need for any background music on my dashboard.

Because when I'm grinding in Destiny, driving around in GTA, or waiting 15 minutes for an online game to start in Halo MCC, it would be nice to have my own music. It's embarrassing that the 360 did it so well and the Xbox One does it so poorly. It's even more embarrassing for them that Sony partnered with Spotify and did it even better than the 360.

If MS adds support for streaming Groove in the background, I'll gladly switch from Spotify. Groove has essentially the same exact library of music, but they have much better sales on their service than Spotify. I got a year of Groove earlier this year for 30 dollars. Every Christmas they put it on sale for 50 percent off.

Hmm, interesting. Could mean that they're planning on tying it into various services like Pandora or Spotify (is Spotify on X1?) in addition to letting you use your own music. Something like that could be very cool.

EDIT: Oh, I see Spotify is PS4 exclusive, well that sucks.

The suggestion somebody else had of letting any app, not just music, serve as audio is cool, though. TV, Netflix, podcasts, whatever.

"Doing in right"...

Translation for how can MSFT somehow leverage some licensing or fee control from content provders ala Apple?

You can just have it via USB or a Spotify like service? Come on man.

Regardless, I almost never use this feature, but for those that do, I can understand the frustration.

It was best on the original Xbox where the game could implement it's own custom solution. Phantom Dust let you choose what song you wanted to play on a stage-by-stage basic and it was epic. IIRC Burnout Revenge would override the in-game soundtrack and track details would show up in the UI. You even had a button to jump between tracks!

The problem is my telecom provider is throwing in spotify free. Need to confirm if they can include Groove instead in that case. But that would lock me of PS4 since I use spotify a lot. I would just prefer this stupid exclusivity to end and just have spotify on both platforms. Really disappointed that stuff like this is being money hatted and kept exclusive. Urghhh

Spotify is exclusive to PS4 on consoles for the time being.

2 years in Market and Microsoft is trying to match the feature in their own 10 year old console.

Shows you how much there were prepared for this generation.

Sony didn't dump Music Unlimited to pay for Spotify Exclusivity for PS4...

I believe him. He has a commitment to not halfassing things since he accepted his current position just over a year ago, and the UI is far improved now. I'm expecting a lot of good stuff in the future too.

Spotify is exclusive to PS4 on consoles for the time being.

The nice thing about Spotify on PS4 is that even the free version works there. As long as you don't mind an ad or two. As it stands now, any game that I find more enjoyable with background music gets purchased on my PS4. MS really dropped the ball this gen in many different areas that they once dominated.
