Why is WB sidelining Martian Manhunter for DCCU?

Diversity more than anything, though it sounds like they're going for Jon Stewart Green Lantern too?

Don't know why but I've always had the feeling that WB would prefer to push John Stewart (diversity, building off an older audience that grew up with the Justice League cartoons, failure of the last Green Lantern movie) but there are people within DC Comics like Geoff Johns and others that would push Hal Jordan as much as possible even with the failure of the last movie. This is why I think we're getting a Green Lantern Corp movie instead of just a plain Green Lantern. Both sides will be happy at that point and it gives them more freedom to do more if you jump right to the corp.

Exactly. And Vision looks incredible. Fantastic marriage of CGI and Practical effects for his costume.

So piss off, people who say Martian Manhunter can't work visuallly irl

That just looks like Tony Stark with paint on his face

Granted but the cartoon was really popular and comic books generally sell like shit. I must of had the "Wait, isn't Green Lantern black?" conversation dozens of times when Ryan Reynolds was announced for that role.
Comics don't sell as well as they used to, but you're taking a lot out of the equation. In most of the JL animated films, Hal was the GL. Plus he's had his own film. Hal is most certainly more popular at this point.

Plus, there's a generational gap. Hal was the GL for a loooong time before he was killed, and has been from the mid 00's onward. There's also a lot of merchandising that pushes Hal. Yes, John is really popular, but Hal is definitely more popular and DC is going to continue pushing him regardless.
Nah green lanterns could only do bubbles and pew pew lasers.

The show minimal knowledge of their powers and less of imagination on how to use them.

Actually, they played John's lack of constructs as a guy who likes to be direct and is all about the basics. A cop out, sure, but he did use constructs a few times. Plus, Sinestro used constructs all the time, so it's not like they had minimal knowledge. They kept the broke characters from being broke, and honestly, it worked.

They should really just let TV use Hal and leave movies to Guy/Kyle. I don't have anything against John Stewart but he really doesn't offer much contrast to the rest of the league as those two would.

The last interesting thing I thought John did was
snap another lantern's neck when he was going to leak information
. He's the lantern that will step up when the hard choices are made, if only they could write a story about him without referring to his military background or Xanshi every 5 panels.

I don't like or hate Hal either, but his history with Sinestro is the most entertaining part of the GL mythos for me. They could substitute any of the other lanterns in though.

They had Captain Atom as a blowup doll

Miss Martian >>> Martian Manhunter

All this Hawkgirl slander is disgusting too tbh

The one thing I admire about Black Manta is he actually hates Aquaman. It isn't some weird twisted friendship with Hal/Sinestro, or Lex being envious of Superman, or a twisted obsession with Joker/Bats. Black Manta is just a dick and will take any opportunity to ruin Aquaman.

You all of people should appreciate MM, he fucked his cousin's chick right before their wedding.

Refreshing, Black Manta just don't like the dude. No twisted love/hate, just hate.

Even Power Girl's team me and 3 other people read had a cool name

Heh. I remember Sovereign Seven when I was desperate for some Claremont back in the days. Big dude's power (Reflex?) was only fast when he was using his reflexes. Heh. Nah, that book didn't last too long. Forgot all about Power Girl.

People have forgotten how effective villains like Black Manta are. Fuck an origin story, fuck sins of the father, fuck a stolen love interest.... "Tell Aquaman that Black Manta said 'Eat a dick' and if I see with his hands in his pockets he's getting washed right in the middle of the street"

but manta has an origin story now

aquaman killed manta's father (iirc had something to do with the night aquaman's father died) so manta devoted his life to hunting down and killing aquaman

Maybe the aquaman poster is about uniting the seven seas?

Also, they could only do manhunter with copious CG... and we all saw enough Green Lantern to know how that worked out.

If Marvel can do the goddamn Vision and goddamn Groot then Martian Manhunter can be done effectively.

DC just way too traumatized from Green Lantern to take the chance

In the Justice League cartoon, there were seven founding members:

  • Batman
  • Superman
  • Wonder Woman
  • Flash
  • Green Lantern
  • Hawkgirl
  • Martian Manhunter

Of these, one of the most interesting and most overpowered characters was Martian Manhunter--he can turn intangible, he can shapeshift, he has Superman-levels of strength, and he has telepathic powers. When I finally got into comics and read New 52, I was kind of surprised to see that he wasn't part of the Justice League, but even then they addressed it as "we tried accepting him into our team and things went bad:"

JL8e.jpg

Now, in DCCU when they released the Aquaman pic it had this text over it:

aquamanjasonmomoa.jpg

which implies there are going to be seven members of the Justice League, but if you look at the heroes being introduced through the announced movies, there's

  • Superman
  • Batman
  • Wonder Woman
  • Aquaman
  • Flash
  • Shazam
  • Cyborg
  • Green Lantern

which is eight, but Green Lantern is being introduced after JL part 2 so we can assume the first seven are JL founder members. So what happened to MM? He's not even a part of the DCCU as far as we can tell, much less a part of JLA. What gives? You would assume with the popularity of the original cartoon they'd have him instead of Shazam or Cyborg or something.
You could be reading that poster wrong. Could be referring to the seven seas

This is really overpowered team. Seeing this also reminds me how much I miss the Young Justice show.

It really is

Brick/Hitter: Supergiirl
Psychic: MM
Speed: Flashette
Tech and energy: Static
Anti Magic backup hitter: Blue Bettle
Team Leader: Stephanie
Tactics and MA: Damien

A static shock and blue beetle buddy comic film would be cool. Think of all of the idiotic diet racist Mexican and Black jokes the idiot writers would write.

Yesssssss

Too good for this world

Damien would have totally call Static "Negro" at some point;.

God dammit, I didn't know this was a thing before, and now I know it is and I can't have it.

What is wrong with you.

Ludicrously OP. But so, so good.

Well he was Captain Atom, not Breach.
Please tell me you got that reference

"The Others" not even "Sea Devils" or "Water Force 7"

The Goddamn "Others"

Sea devils sounds corny the others is unique.

Neogaffer, show him the screen where him and Mera did that awesome launch from the sea to fight that monster.

"The Others" isn't unique, just a representation of the fact that they weren't an official group so they didn't have an official name.

You right, Johns reconned my brain.

Even the Defenders had the Defenders name, and they were the original non team

do you remember what issue that was? thought it was when they went after atlanna but when i looked at the issue i was confusing it with mera bringing up her own monster to fight that god

Goofy superheros won't sell tickets. People want reality, that's why guardians of the Galaxy was such a bomb and the fantastic four are Hollywood gold... Wait what?! No no, this can't be right, no one wants crazy characters! Oh no, start a world we live in.

Is Shazam confirmed to be a member of the JL or making an appearance in the JL movies?

I'd rather they sideline Shazam and keep that light and fun. It's an IP with massive appeal potential to wide demographics.

Gimme Bats, Supes, WW, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg and GL or MM instead as the founding members of JL.

They could insert MM in Part II of JL if they need to.

Honestly it pretty much is an attempt to (in a rare moment of foresight for DC) have the movie lineup reflect the current, default comic line up - and since MM isn't a part of that, he isn't a part of the movies either. Shazam's kinda ambiguous since Johns has clearly wanted to do more with the character for a long time, but having first dibs on basically everything at DC has kept him from actually using the character much beyond their New 52 origin. He has however been one the most recurring DC characters in adaptations for the last decade or so, starting with (as Captain Marvel, of course) with his first appearance in Justice League, making several appearances on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, several of the DTV movies (and even being the star of one - albeit as the main piece in a collection), and appearing in several of the video games, most predominantly Mortal Kombat and Injustice, when you consider how otherwise limited the available cast are (compared to say, Lego Batman).

I dunno if its purely because Johns likes him from his days working on Justice Society of America, or if DC is trying (and repeatedly failing/missing the point) to reignite whatever spark made Captain Marvel the big seller of the golden age of comics.
