If you guys are itching for a Gothic album that is released this year I would recommend the new Winter Severity Index, which is a major step up in terms of Gothic sound after 3 of the members left the band (Because they wanted to go for more noisier affair and the main girl was having none of that)
Its really good and you guys should give it a shot!

And yeah, Ruth is such a great frontwoman. Just something about her. Really good live also.

Sorry, man. I'm listening to music of all eras all the time and just shared what I knew, which was DCD. Didn't realize it was "Goth 101" necessarily but that may have been why I got the recommendation in the first place.

Newer stuff, I honestly have no idea. I haven't made it that far yet.

That said, I haven't explored the genre much. I jump around a lot. One minute I can be listening to Grimes, the next minute I can be listening to Luther Vandross, the next minute I can be listening to Belle & Sebastian.

I'm a bit of a wacko when it comes to music.

Had an awesome time at Fun Fun Fun Fest again this year. 5th time going I believe? Can't recommend it enough.

Speaking of recommendations, just listening to Lissie and always try and turn people onto her. She's amazing.

Anybody else end up listening to that Aye Nako EP from late summer? (bandcamp or yt ) Enjoyed it a lot when it came out but forgot about it for a couple months, remembered it when one of Joanna Gruesome's members was wearin a shirt of theirs on stage the other day and have been revisiting it. Very superchunky, singer even sounds a bit like a deeper voiced mac sometimes.

also gonna throw out this split from Bulldog Eyes and Cat Be Damned, solid bedroom pop. the cat be damned side has final versions of songs that've been around in demo form since earlier in the year so I didn't find it quite as memorable, but these are definitely the best versions so far. Bulldog Eyes' side is very good, "usay" is a fun original and there's a worthwhile MBV cover closing it out. both PWYW:

listening to Frankie Cosmos new EP. It's nice... Her record last year was one of my favorites. I feel like people in here wrote her off because she has famous parents, but maybe I'm just making that up in my head.

and honestly, still don't feel terrible about it? For me it's about the genre she's working in--other bedroom pop artists feel like they're constantly pushing against limitations and trying to make do with the little they have. recording entire albums with one mic, getting a bass sound out of a guitar that sounds right, etc. Which then feeds back into the feelings of intimacy that comes with great homemade indie pop. when you're the kid of freakin Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates and could ask mom and dad for unlimited studio time any of those limitations feel artificial. not to mention the fact that unlike a lot of her peers her situation allowed her to pursue any of her passions early as a kid and not have to worry about school and jobs and shit.

now I know a lot of that is authenticity bullshit, but I can't help but feel it. plus, it's all tangential to the fact that before I knew anything about Cosmos I listened to a couple songs and couldn't muster up any enthusiasm for em. that learning about her past only made listening to her work...less essential.

And hey, I can't help but be suspicious of the fact that the indie pop person with famous parents just happens to be the one that pitchfork/etc. covers with extreme regularity while devoting less coverage to (or outright ignoring) acts like julia brown/teen suicide, elvis d, bellows, radiator hospital, told slant, any of the related UK diy pop bands like Trust Fund or Martha or two white cranes so on and so forth. like, that can't be a coincidence.

I just really loved the songs on Zentropy. I didn't read until much later that she had famous parents. Even then I don't really care as it's not like she's singing these political punk anthems about fighting the system and the oppressed middle/lower class of society.

I could be wrong but I doubt her parents bought her studio time... her bandcamp is full of songs that sound like they were recorded on an 8-track in a bedroom. It's probably true that she got more attention and her recordings passed around because of her parents which then lead to Zentropy being recorded. But even then, I'm sure there are MANY children of famous people who try to be creative and just fall flat on their face and no one gives them any attention because they just aren't good at what they do.

in the end I just wouldn't listen to the songs if I didn't dig them, and I do (too).

I think "The Answer" rips but I'm not gonna listen to this right away because the album will probably be around in just a few weeks. excited enough for a new Savages record that I'd rather save as much of it as possible for when I'm sitting down with the full record.

I should listen to Zentropy in full someday, I'm sure I'd like it well enough. Like I said, I don't dislike anything I've heard. Just not grabbed by it.

The studio time thing: I wasn't saying she did get studio time, I'm saying for her getting studio time would be feasible because of her wealth. Other artists in her scene who get way less recognition would leap at that opportunity but aren't offered it so they have to record in houses with single sm57s.

hah not cheering properly, what a weirdo. I don't really know anything about the radiator hospital guy I guess, I only know Something Wild is a great record

I still like the 2 tracks they have posted. We don't need another Husbands and Shut Up because frankly , that album as good as it was, doesn't need to be replicated. The noise in the new tracks just makes it much more fresh than a simple rehash and Beth is as expressive and impressive as always.

Le Guess Who 2015 is a go. Just saw Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir perform. Up next the first big act of the festival: Julia Holter. She has a great new record and it's in a church so should be fun!

Their drummer is insanely good (saw em last week).

Over here, LGW day 1: Julia Holter in a church, great performance of mostly new songs, which was fine by me cause I really like her new album. Then saw about half of The Notwist performance, just as good as last year on BKS. Really a band you should experience live, when their songs transform to an almost techno music sound. Then finished the day with Rats on Rafts, a Dutch post-punk band that's actually good. Unfortunately that was it for the night as I wanted to take the last train home, so I had to skip Ought. Tomorrow Ill stay in Utrecht so more music (Viet Cong + Protomartyr!)

Junun is out today and it's really good as I expected after watching the documentary several weeks ago. Is that even relevant to this thread? I mean it involves Jonny Greenwood. Regardless, people should listen to it!

In much more positive and exciting news, Yo La Tengo is performing nearby in February. Hell yes.

I have only done that few times, but nothing recent, because its simply not worth buying a ticket for a band that you don't want to see despite the supporting act.

I disagree, I've done it plenty of times and by the time the main act came along I'm usually wasted so I'll enjoy them anyway.

Also welcome to the vinyl resurgence, I started collecting last December and say I've spent a good $600 on records but it's an awesome hobby to have.

Very happy with the Kamasi one. Bought it after his show and his dad was handeling sales (also plays in his band). And then I got signed by Kamasi who was hanging out at the booth as well. Well worth it. The VU record is a reissue. The Rubber Soul and Deja Vu records are originals.

About going to gigs for the opening act. In my experience it's always a bit of a letdown to see a band you like in a crowd that generally doesn't give two fucks about who's supporting. They'll just continue to have their conversations during the gig which is very annoying if you try to enjoy a good performance.

Very annoying to try and watch a band when their sound is turned down and the crowd is talking through it though. I just end up frustrated normally.
