The best mobile game is...

Goblin Sword is my favourite mobile game. It cost me 99c, has solid platforming controls, ~70 levels, ~10 bosses, 26 weapons, 12 sets of armor, ~30 powerups and zero in-app purchases. For 99c. If you enjoy platformers and don't mind using touch screen controls for them, it's a no brainer IMO. It's not really difficult but it's very fun.

Totally agree with OP. Also agree with the points that a mobile game that requires internet automatically drops it out of "best game" territory. I loved Puzzle and Dragon, but needing to connect online was very limiting, meaning no playing on the subway or in the hospital where I work (no service and locked down WiFi).

Lots of solid choices here, but I personally thought JJ was better than a lot of them specifically at being a MOBILE game. Exactly as op said, the fact that you can play for a minute and it is fine, and it needs one finger to be played is perfect for mobile. A lot of choices in this thread need too long of a play session or would play better on, say, a 3DS, which makes them great games, but lesser mobile experiences specifically. If I can't play it during an elevator ride or when going one stop on the subway and be fine, it drops in my rankings.

Kingdom rush, horizon chase, beneath the lighthouse, crossy road, mountain goat mountain, sword of xolan, pinball arcade, Lara Croft Go, pipe lines, and of course....

Is there a good way to play mobile games with a controller yet? Touch screen just ain't my thing.

I realize that's what the entire thread is about, I'm just piggybacking.

With half a million games on iOS alone, I guess they can't all suck. I like VAINGLORY and others mentioned ITT. Prune is kind of cool.

All? No. Some? Yes.
I can vouch for Steelseries feeling good but then lacking some obvious inputs like L3/R3. No controller is quite as robust as DS4 or XBox 1 controller

A lot of great games mentioned but don't think I saw anyone mention Year Walk or Device 6 yet. [Edit: N/m saw someone mention Device 6 pg. 2 - still another awesome game by Simogo who made both titles.] Terrific and creative mobile titles.

Even if it's on everything now, Super Hexagon is still the king. I still play it, years after release, and Hyper Hexagonest remains an intense challenge!

Any game which requires an online connection prevents it from being the best. Although I do love Hearthstone and Carcassonne. I hated Threes. But the Rayman games are certainly up there.

Basically, if you can use one digit, and play it for a single minute at a time and still be productive, it's winning.

So what mobile are you playing hearthstone on that doesn't have an always online connection?

It is perfect for your criteria and uses basically nothing in terms of data. Battery? Ok not so good, but you can't have everything.

If you want to rule mobile games out, I would think drawing a line through any game with a scummy F2P model that stops you playing the game when you want to play it would be #1 on the list.

I haven't played a mobile game since Daddy Long Legs (deleted a long time ago), but I'll hear you out, OP.

Gave Jetpack Joyride a go, and I can see there's potential for fun there.
The "runner" genre works well for touch devices because all you need is one digit.
However, I just don't think I can stomach the constant advertisements, reminders, etc. that are now standard for free mobile games. The initial load time also feels too long considering...

These days, if I want "pick up and play", I'll open my 3DS or take my Vita out of sleep mode. I can afford to spend my time thinking while taking a dump, instead of sinking minutes into things like this (as well made as they might be).

Hitman GO is still my favorite. The games that make you wait or pay put me off instantaneously. I want to play a game, not a revenue model.

Guess I can't disagree, everytime I boot up JPJR, I have a blast. The Room trilogy, Infinity Blade trilogy, Kingdom Rush trilogy, and Simogo games (Year Walk/Device 6) are way up there though.

Forgot about Monument Valley. Oops!

The Kingdom Rush series. I've lost so many hours sat on the toilet trying to finish each level on veteran. So addicted, it's my weakness, and the cause of frustration of my work colleagues wondering why I'm taking so long...

Not sure if JPJR is the best game on mobile, but it is polished as hell. It takes the limitations of the platform and even a genre that has thousands and thousands of competitors, puts in some of it's own twists and then just polishes the hell out of it.

What makes this better than normal tower defense?

play them and you'll find out

this is coming from someone who has played plenty of them. I could explain, but it's best that you give a try and beat the first one, which is now free on both Android and iOS

Football Manager. While it has completely different features and different the full game and the Classic versions, I believe its still a competent mobile game.Very addictive with that "just one more game mentality". Easy to pick up and play as well. I don't know why but I play a lot of the PC version, but I always end up playing more of the Handheld/Mobile version.

I'm putting down a vote to Horizon Chase too. Amazing game. One of the best I played this year.

Lara Croft Go deserves some recognition too.

And in terms of endless runners I'm more of a fan of Canabalt.
