Young Greek women selling sex for the price of a sandwich (or not, see #245)

Young Greek women are selling sex for the price of a sandwich as six years of painful austerity have pushed the European country to the financial brink, a new study showed Friday.

The study, which compiled data on more than 17,000 sex workers operating in Greece, found that Greek women now dominate the country’s prostitution industry, replacing Eastern European women, and that the sex on sale in Greece is some of the cheapest on offer in Europe.

“Some women just do it for a cheese pie, or a sandwich they need to eat because they are hungry,” Gregory Laxos, a sociology professor at the Panteion University in Athens, told the London Times newspaper. “Others [do it] to pay taxes, bills, for urgent expenses or a quick [drug] fix,” said Laxos, who conducted the three-year study.

When the economic crisis began in Greece, the going rate for sex with a prostitute was 50 euros ($53), the London newspaper quoted Laxos as saying. Now, it’s fallen to as low as two euros ($2.12) for a 30-minute session.

He said his wide-ranging study showed that the number of desperate young women — the ones offering the cheapest sex — appeared to be on the rise. “It doesn’t look like these numbers will fade,” he told the Times. “Rather they are growing at a steady and consistent pace.”

Prostitution is legal in Greece. The study showed that most of the Greek women just coming into prostitution are between the ages of 17 and 20.

The study comes after a shocking report last month of an unemployed Greek mother pimping her 12-year-old daughter to a priest and a retired man for money.

What happened to European food assistance and food banks? One would assume that this is a result of drug addiction or are there really places in Greece where the situation has deteriorated so badly?

And the worst thing is that there is no end in sight.

This is why we can't have nice things memes.

Oh, I didn't know this. Making it illegal surely wouldn't stop them from doing this when times are so rough, though. Can't wait for people to blame legalized prostitution instead of crippling cuts and government policy,

Okay that first post fucking sucks. This article is about women too poor, too desperate and too disenfranchised to feel like they have any other choice.

Yeah I was about to ask if it's legal or illegal, because 17'000 people is a huge survey size for something people can't legally say they are.

I suppose they could try restricting it? IDK, this seems like a problem with no solution where outside help isn't adequate.

I can't even begin to imagine a long term solution coming from the Greek government on it's own.
So you're saying you're into 12 year old prostitutes, huh?
...

Just a wee bit overboard? It was a dumb post, but we don't need to label him a pedo.

Yeah this isn't just women doing sex work because they want to, but because they have to. To eat a sandwich.

Hard to believe 3 euro price tags though. Feel like the article might be a bit sensationalist.

I genuinely don't know how we could ever help Greece get on top of it again.

Depending how you feel about it though, prostitution is easy money though.
Well, if it earned you more than a damn sandwich.

So you're saying you're into 12 year old prostitutes, huh?

You know.
Inappropriate responses might be annoying, but at least they're not as petty as this.

I'm somewhat against legalizing prostitution, because in most cases it is exploitative. Most women would not sell intimacy and their bodies to a bunch of unknown people unless they absolutely have to.

When you do it in order to survive, then it is almost at the level of sexual slavery. We should live in a society where women don't have to reduce themselves to this fucking nonsense.

Come on now, OP went for the title when posting the picture.

But yeah the mother pimping her daughter is fucking nasty, if she is that desperate why not do it herself? She is ruining the life of her child.

I expected an off color joke, but not that disgusting.

It's tragic how these women were failed by their state and the EU at large.

I was going to say something along the lines of "If prostitution is legal there, then this shouldn't be exactly shady blah blah blah..." but it turns out that isn't the case:

There are currently an estimated 20,000 prostitutes in Greece (according to EKKE) of which fewer than 1,000 are legally registered.

Because although street prostitution is illegal in Greece, sex work is technically not. (Although it’s not considered a profession and workers don’t have any kind of protection from labour laws).

Its worse that drive by shit posting, especially with subjects like this, is just funny and acceptable. Its disgusting.
Like another poster said, these posters are probably thinking about the sex workers nearby them as they live in cities most likely. Or like craiglist ads or something. Those women do it by choice so those posters probably thought the same thing. I mean best case scenario.

I also think you'll have a lot more support with how wrong that was. It's true that it's disgusting.

It's obviously an extreme outlier. You can find such cases probably in every country. I wouldn't be surprised to see reports of "parents" in other country who do the same to buy drugs, etc.
