Should a black woman have a "black sounding" voice? Is this what you are getting at?

What other stereotypes should this character conform to?

This character has an English / south African? accent, if the VO performer can do that and is best at it then its easy to see how she came through the audition.

Or did this character inclusion not tick enough boxes for you to be acceptable?

It is kind of ironic that complaints about the voice actor not being black sounding (for "accuracy") are being tossed around when similar kind of comments are frowned upon or even ban worthy. Suppose when where someone tries to define what this black sounding voice is or if someone in a different thread on a different topic says that black people sound different which will cause people to flip out there too. Both are literally the same implication.

To me here in UK, blacks don't sound any different that others. I can say the same for South Africa, which is where this character is suppose to be from.

Disappointed they went with Laura Bailey for this character.

Oh come on. People do not want a "black sounding" character, that's something you have made up. People want a black character to be played by a black actor. Representation is important, seeing characters of colour being played by their actual ethnicities should be championed. If they wanted a South African character, why get a woman from Mississippi to play her? The accent is pretty terrible anyway. No one is saying she should have a "black voice" they're saying that a black actress should be playing a black character.

Phenomenal graphics -- the new character looks awesome. I can't believe the end of the trailer (after she says "Let's see what you've got") is actual gameplay. Just insane.

I have sort of a gut feeling based on nothing that the relationship with this character is adversarial at first but she ultimately is an ally.

He prolly came through it.

Might be. But I'm thinking of a party situation, he came as a guest, snuck into grab whatever, got caught by the new character who was also there for the same item...the she kicks his ass and he goes through the window, probably unintentionally lol

Let's see how this theory holds out

People seriously upset that a white lady is voicing a non-white lady. Fuck sake people.

Her hair looks amazing.

My Only issue with it is one for support of Black actors. I would like to see a black actor hired to play the part as I just personally would like to support black artists receiving more support in the entertainment business.

Representation is important, characters should be played by people of their ethnicity. I could go for days, but I'm going to stay in my lane.

Edit: in case anyone else runs across this. I meant minority characters and non white characters. I messed up writing this post.

We had an issue over here in the UK about an Asian voice actor complaining that radio producers lacked imagination, that Asian voice actors can play 'white' characters just fine and should be hired more often.

Skin colour and voice are two different things I feel.

again, nothing to do with the voice or accent. Black voice actors are such a small part of the voice actor community because their roles are given to white people. This is one more character that they have passed up giving the opportunity to a black voice actress because Laura Bailey has a name behind her.

So your complaint has nothing to do with character colour?

Yes mocapping is acting. On a soundstage. Voice acting is acting behind a mic. Thats my point, they're not the same. ND designs their characters to resemble their actors in a stylized way. It's why Elena looks more and more like Emily Rose with every game with advancing tech.

Of course I've played TLoU. Having three black actors in one game isn't some pass on every other game afterwards. I'm not saying ND despises people of colour. I am saying it is a really odd decision with the casting here.

The only overreaction I'm seeing is people saying "stop talking about this" and complaining about the pc police. Don't worry, no one is taking your video games away from you.

Yes, because Sully looks like his actor, or Sam, or Joel, or Ellie. Sometimes they resemble, sometimes they don't. ND will reclute whoever they think has the correct voice or can do the job better in their eyes for whatever reason. The fact that they not only show diversity in characters, but they had three black actors voicing black characters in TLOU (as you already know) is reason enough to give them the benefit of the doubt instead of shit.

This whole argument is stupid, tbh.

Ugh, I can see it already before playing it. You will be forced to take a beating no matter how good you are at the mechanics... if you are going to be able to completely trash her after that scene by playing well, I will be really surprised!

The beauty of VO and mocap is that people can play ANY characters. Black people can play white people. Asian people can play black people. White people can play asian people.
It's where as long as you can act, your race doesn't matter at all.
It's really not that difficult.

You either fight her or it's gonna be more like with Cutter in UC3, I'm guessing.

Are you struggling to read? The problem is a black character is being player by a white voice actress.

Please refrain from insults. I understand that you are passionate about this. I am simply trying to understand your argument.
Do you think black voice actors should get more black animated character roles only?

In this game they're playing more with multiple approaches/routes through levels. I could imagine they might make two different post-fight scenes based on whether you beat her or not. I doubt it's something which will have stake in the larger narrative, so they might do that.

Also, very often the bolded doesn't happen. Usually you can still beat up the baddie in a fight but then during the post-fight cutscene the player-character will get beaten. It's totally possible we'll still be able to best her in the fight.

Isn't that racist?

I wouldn't say it is. The representation of minorities in media also reflects the hiring of minorities for acting work. I can see why some might find a black character in a series devoid of black characters being played by a white actress as irksome.

I don't personally care, but I understand the sentiment.

Well I guess we both agree that it's not the voice cause a black actor can sound the same. But say they wanted or had to get Laura due to whatever reason, in that case you'd rather have her character be white instead of Laura voicing a black character? After all when it comes to video games the characters are the ones that end up in limelight not the actors. Also this would also mean the choice of work that minority actors will have will access to will get limited because they are the minority..simple numbers game. The one medium where people can be anyone or anything is voice acting and as I mentioned before video games are probably the only form of entertainment where the characters get more recognition than the actors, as such it does not need to adhere to the issues seen in other form of media.

How about this? Jennifer Hale is white but she voiced Female Shepard who could be white, black asian etc...in a role playing game where you are closer to the character than in any other genre.

On the flip side, Phil LaMarr would not have voiced Vamp or Samurai Jack if they had gone with someone else due to the fact that Phil LaMarr is black but the characters the voiced arent. Or how about James Earl Jones voicing Darth Vader who happens to be white?

Or you know, she just did a better job.
